Boarding News: 15 December 06

  December 2006

Dear Parents,
The holidays will soon be upon us, and thus I extend heartfelt seasons greetings to you and your families. The term ends on Friday, December 22nd (for specific details of the day’s events see the Head of Campus’ newsletter on our website: Newsletter 13th December). Boarders are expected to depart campus by 16.00 at the latest. Boarders are welcome to return after 12.00 on January 15th, 2007 and should be back on campus by 17.00 for the start of Term II (classes begin January 16th).

My visits to Dar and Mwanza in November for student recruitment were fruitful. However, what remains most rewarding when travelling the country is hearing how much an ISM education is respected. Most families and children that we meet want to come to ISM. Our mission in boarding is thus to develop our programmes so as to exceed existing expectations and standards. Helping us continues to be our strong relationship with The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS). I had the honour of being invited to present at the TABS annual conference at the start of this month in Washington DC. My presentation documented the history of our residential ethos (The Five Pillars of Boarding: Community, Respect, Communication, Responsibility, and Environment), and touched upon strategies for promoting moral education in a residential environment. The highlight of the experience was being surround by other professionals who were able to praise, as well as constructively critique our strategies and offer supportive advice for continued progress. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover Todd Leyland, an S2 parent was in the audience. I would like to thank Todd for making the time to support the school and me with his presence. In January the boarding team and I will examine lessons learned from the Washington conference as we endeavour to make ISM a global and regional leader in residential programming.

Following on from this Tony Maynard, an ISM parent, and specialist in leadership and team development will be conducting an in-service at the start of the term for Residential Boarding Parents. We are grateful that Tony is making time for us so close to his pending return to Australia with his family. Staff training is pivotal to the pursuit of excellence at ISM and in any residential setting. Moreover, promoting student leadership remains a goal of our boarding programme, and this Sunday, December 17th, Tony will facilitate a residential education session on leadership for our boarders. The session will begin promptly at 18.30 and your support is encouraged. Please help us by assuring your children have returned to school in a timely manner this weekend.

Last weekend ISM hosted a sports tournament that brought together students from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Ethiopia. The atmosphere was vibrant and ISM boarders were actively involved with all activities, including the management of the disco on Saturday night. I would also like to highlight that weekend planning has been much more student centred this year. Each Monday morning at breakfast boarders and members of the boarding team have developed the weekend programme together so as to promote leadership and a sense of ownership, which are essential for young people in a community setting.

Next Thursday, Italian Passion restaurant in Moshi will play host to our annual Boarding Christmas Dinner. This will be an opportunity for Boarding Council to thank the staff and students who have contributed to a successful first term, in addition to being a chance for everyone involved with residential life at ISM to wish one another well before we depart to be with our own families for several weeks.

In conclusion, I would like to revisit the word family. The concept of family is an important one. Families share our joys and successes in the best of times, in addition to giving us warmth and support when times are challenging. As we look forward to the new year, thank you to everyone in the ISM family for their contributions to boarding life in 2006. My team continues to be resolved to make the ISM boarding family a functional and caring one in 2007. Join us in this pursuit.

Warm wishes,
Richard Eaton
