Boarding News: 26 January 07

  December 2006

Dear Parents,
On behalf of the boarding team: Happy New Year!

Boarders returned to campus on Monday, January 15th, and classes resumed on January 16th. Term II is now in full swing, and boarders are settling down into their routines. With mock-exams upon us for S5 & IB2 students, our boarding Exam Policies are in effect in all secondary boarding houses (see IB Exam rules and S5 Exam rules). These policies have been shaped over the years through consultation with students, teachers, and boarding parents in an effort to facilitate the best study environment possible during this very challenging and important period for our examination year students. Please let us know if your child/children have any special needs during this time and we will do our best to accommodate them.

Speaking of routines, each Sunday after study hall (Monday for Primary) in Term II Secondary boarding parents will host a ‘Family Night’ for their boarders. This is an opportunity for residents in each house to bond with each other through a variety of family style activities, thus enhancing the effectiveness and cohesiveness of our study and social environment. We remain committed to creating a healthy residential atmosphere at ISM – we believe ‘Family Nights’ are another step in the right direction.

“Be balanced, get in shape, feel good!’ This is the slogan for our boarding ‘Training For Life’ programme. To help students actualise the aforementioned statement in the New Year, we have sent up a structure whereby boarders can earn points for additional physical fitness training they engage in outside of regularly scheduled sporting activities. At the end of the term the student who has amassed the most credit will receive a special accolade at our Easter special meal. A number of boarders have made an enthusiastic start in the programme. It’s exciting to see young people taking responsibility for their own physical well-being.

Before students returned in January, Tony Maynard, a former ISM parent, and specialist in leadership and team development conducted an in-service for Residential Boarding Parents. The opportunity to dissect our strengths and weaknesses as a collective was positively received by the team. On-going professional development for boarding parents will remain on our agenda in 2007 and we are always open to suggestions from parents for areas we should target for future growth. One other team note: Mr. Palliwala, Relief Boarding Parent in Kilele/Kipepeo will be taking the term off to represent ISM’s Visiting School’s Programme. He will be replaced by Mr. Tillya, one of several new boarding parents who were trained in 2006 (see this page for more information about new boarding parents). Mr. Tillya has made a positive start and will receive extensive mentoring from Mr. Bowness and Mama Somaiya as the term proceeds.

We welcomed a new primary boarder in January. Samuel Mwase (P2) joined us from one of our neighbouring primary schools. Jana and I are happy to have him living in Kimbilio and we are excited about the opportunity to continue promoting and expanding primary boarding at ISM. We have a beautiful facility and Jana will be working hard this year with our Development Officer, Anne Wilshin, and others to effectively market our primary package. If you would like more information about primary boarding, please contact Jana, myself, or Head of Campus, Keiron White. You are also welcome to tour our primary boarding area if and when you are in Moshi.

In addition to mock-exams, next week will feature an extensive work experience programme for our S4 students, as well a curricular trip to Pangani for boarders and others in IB1. As the term progresses, some boarders will be participating in Model United Nations in Kenya, and the entire community will be invited to boarding’s Third Annual ISM Quiz Night! We hope to see faces new and old join us for this event on February 16th.

Finally, Keiron White will be away from school recruiting new staff from January 31st to February 7th. I will be acting-Head of Campus while he is away. If you have any questions or concerns that you would normally direct to Keiron, I will be more than happy to assist you during this time.

Best wishes for the year ahead.
