| March 2007 Dear Parents, In a few short days we will conclude Term II. Classes end on Friday, March 23rd. Boarders should be out of residence by 16.00. Please contact Jana if you have last minute travel concerns. We hope all boarders will remain in school until the end of term. Secondary Parent/Teacher meetings will also take place on Friday the 23rd from 10.30 until 12.00 in Karibu Hall. Boarding parents (with the exception of Andy Bowness) will be available for consultation in their boarding houses during this time. Madhu Chibber will be on duty Friday for Mr. Bowness in the Kilele/Kipepeo area. If you have any questions or concerns you need to share with Mr. Bowness before the end of term, please contact him by email. Our end of term Easter Dinner will take place on Thursday, March 22nd beginning at approximately 18.00. If you will be in the Moshi area Thursday evening, you are welcome to join us. Please contact me as soon as possible if you would like to be part of this special occasion. Students who have made contributions throughout the term will be recognised and a special visit from the Easter Bunny is anticipated. Dress is formal. As I promised in February, I will provide information this month regarding arrangements for S5 students who are sitting exams next term. The last day of formal classes for S5 students will be May 4th. After this time, Boarders may remain in school and take advantage of our facilities. Teachers and boarding parents will be available to assist them. However, with parental permission, students are welcome to return home until the start of exams. Jana and I will be happy to support any students that require special travel arrangements during this period. Last week I forwarded a proposal to SMT (Senior Management Team) for boarding house and staff restructuring in 2007/8. I strongly believe the proposed realignment of houses and staff will be in the best interests of the students and the school. The overarching goal of the proposal is to create more space (particularly for the girls) and more fluid supervision and access to adults. I look forward to SMT’s reply and the opportunity to share these exciting developments with students and parents. On Saturday, March 17th, thanks to the efforts of Science teacher, Chris Folland, Head of Secondary, John Hopkins, and our woodworking teacher Mr. Kimaro, boarders were able to enjoy an exciting day of catapult building by the pool. After a mid-day barbeque, the designers fired projectiles over the swimming pool at a makeshift target! It was a thrilling day enjoyed by a large number of students. The boarding team has thoroughly benefited from the collegiality of teachers, administrators, and the support and ancillary staff this term. I would like to formally recognise their contributions. In the last several weeks, we have continued to experience minor problems with theft in our boarding houses. In response, we have spoken to students about the importance of locking away valuables, securing their rooms, and being responsible. Furthermore, we have changed several locks to improve security, and spoken firmly to cleaners about the importance of professional behaviour and vigilance. Following on from this, we have continued to encourage students to use the School Bank as opposed to keeping large sums of money in their rooms. I have also engaged in healthy dialogue with Madhu Chibber (who runs the School Bank) about establishing more flexible banking hours. Please support us by reinforcing the importance of the School Bank to your children and encourage them to utilise its services. Term III officially begins with classes on April 11th. Boarders are welcome to return to school after 12.00 on April 10th and should be in residence by 17.00. Wishing you and your family a safe holiday, as well as a Happy Easter and Maulid. Yours faithfully, Richard Eaton Head of Boarding International School Moshi | |
