Boarding News: 28 April 07

  April 2007

Dear Parents,
Term III is well underway. Classes ended on Friday, April 20th for IB2 students. They are now on study leave. Their exams begin Tuesday, May 2nd. IGCSE Students finish classes next Friday, May 4th. Their exams will begin Tuesday May 8th after a short study leave. Please remember to keep us informed if you plan to take your children out of school during their study leave. If you need help making end of term travel arrangements for your IB2 or S5 children, please contact us at your earliest convenience. IB Graduation is May 26th and our S5 Leaving Ceremony in June 1st. IB2 boarders should be out of residence by 17.00 on May 26th and S5 boarders by 17.00 on June 1st.

Our boarding house Exam Policies began on Monday, April 23rd. The overarching goal of our residential programme is to provide an excellent study environment and our exam policies help assure this at a critical time of the year (please see IB Exam Rules and S5 Exam Rules for more information). If your exam year children are having difficultly studying, please encourage them to communicate this immediately to their boarding parent.

The last several weeks have been packed with a variety of activities. In our OP programme, boarders have ascended to Mandara and Homombo Huts on Mt. Kilimanjaro and several boarders will attempt to reach the base of Mawenzi this weekend. On April 14th boarding hosted a successful games night in the dining hall; this was followed the next weekend by an exciting trip on April 21st to the TPC Sugar Plantation for bush paintball (played with local slingshots —or manatis— and eye-goggles). The night before the entire ISM community enjoyed a vibrant Variety Show, which included a farewell tribute to the IB2 class. Last but not least, congratulations to ‘The Galactics’ who claimed the Boarding Intramural Sport Indoor Football Championship last Wednesday night, April 18th. ‘The Galactics’ were Yasmin Stigwood, Jesse Murnyak, Salum Faraji, Madafa Tarimo, and Basile Gasasira – well done!

Next month will be a busy one, which will include several out of school celebrations for leaving IB2 and S5 students. Mr. White will soon be forwarding a letter to all parents regarding these private parties. I encourage you to read his letter carefully, and to contact us if you have further questions or concerns with respect to graduation and/or leaving ceremony parties.

This weekend we will initiate a discussion with all returning students regarding room allocation and house assignments for 2007/8. In preparation for the new school year we will be formalising our room allocation policy and some students, as is usually the case, will be moving to new boarding houses. We hope to reallocate house assignments in the best interest of the boarding community.

We will also host two new events in May. On May 4th we will host a coffee morning on the Moshi Campus. Our first topic will be ‘Student Leadership at ISM.’ If you are in Moshi, you are welcome join us for an interactive discussion on this issue beginning at 07.35 in the Primary Office. Following on from this, there will be a Primary Boarding Open House on May 11th. Parents and others interested in learning more about our Primary Boarding Programme are welcome to join us on the 11th for a BBQ lunch and a ‘walk through’ of our primary facilities. Lunch begins at 12.30 and ‘walk throughs’ will go on until 15.00. All are welcome.

I look forward to seeing many of you during what is shaping up to be an active finish to the school year. In the meantime, please stay in touch.

Yours faithfully,

Richard Eaton
