| May 2007 Dear Parents, As we approach the finish line in what has been a challenging, yet productive year at ISM, we reflect, and look forward. On May 4th there was a successful coffee morning on the Moshi Campus. Our topic was ‘Student Leadership at ISM.’ This has been an issue on the Boarding Team’s agenda since 2005. It was interesting to share our experiences on the topic with parents and other teachers at the coffee morning. In 2005 we began revamping our Boarding Council, and in 2006 added a student-driven Food Council to advise us on matters related to meal/snack service. Next year we will implement an Activities Council. Its brief will be to facilitate greater student participation in planning and running special events. Hence, our residential theme for 2007/8: ‘Students At The Centre.’ Throughout the coming school year we will continue striving for ways to involve students in the life of the programme. Let us know how we are doing. Your advice and feedback as parents is valued and appreciated. On May 11th there was a Primary Boarding Open House. Parents and others interested in learning more about our Primary Boarding Programme joined us for a BBQ lunch and student-led ‘walk through’ of our primary facilities. A small, but interested group of parents, teachers, administrators, and students enjoyed the afternoon. It was an event worth hosting and something we will certainly do again. All in attendance left – after roasting marshmallows in our banda – with full stomachs and more awareness of our junior residential scheme. This term there has also been the regular litany of activities and events: fortnightly ‘hashes’ with Chris, basketball with Andy, treasure hunts with Jana, and cooking activities with Mama Chibber and Mama Somaiya. As the term concludes, I would like to extend a huge thank you to the dedicated team of residential educators who have worked with your children this year. A special thanks is owed to Chris Johansson and Andy Bowness for their years of service to our community. They have both contributed significantly to the development of ISM and I would like to extend best wishes to them as they continue their education and careers in Europe and beyond. We will host an End of Year Special Meal in their honour on Thursday, June 7th. If you are in Moshi and would like to attend, please contact us for more information. It was a pleasure seeing many of you last weekend at the IB2 Dinner & Graduation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank IB2 parents for their support and correspondence over the last two years. It has been a challenging journey, but for all of us, one worth taking. This weekend we will say good-bye to our S5 students, though many will return for D1. Their ceremony will commence at 15.00 on the Moshi Campus. I will also have the pleasure of attending the Arusha S5 ceremony earlier in the day. I am looking forward to these additional opportunities to meet with parents and celebrate the accomplishments of our students. The term concludes on Friday, June 8th 2007. Parents Conferences will begin at 10.30 in Karibu Hall. They will continue until 12.00. Thereafter, lunch will be available in the dining hall – parents are welcome to join us. Boarders should be out of residence by 16.00. Classes resume on August 13th 2007. Boarders are welcome to return after 12.00 on August 12th, and should be moved in by 17.00. Thus, after ten invigorating months, we close the book on 2006/7. May I wish you and your families an enjoyable recess. Yours faithfully, Richard Eaton Head of Boarding International School Moshi | |
