Boarding News: 6 August 07

  August 2007

Dear Parents,
After a long and restful holiday, my team and I are back in Moshi enthusiastically preparing for a new school year. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Andrew Mackenzie and his family to the residential staff. Andrew will be teaching in the Science department and running the Kilele/Kipepeo boarding area (M1 – M4, S5, and D1 – 2 boys). Although he is Canadian – and joins us from Istanbul, Turkey – he is no stranger to the continent. Having spent part of his childhood in Rhodesia, Andrew is excited to be back in Africa.

In addition to welcoming new staff, we have also been hosting an alumni reunion this weekend. Over 230 former students, teachers, and friends of ISM have been on campus enjoying a variety of special events. Talking to students from the different eras has been a unique and enriching experience. Most have cited the lasting friendships they made and the amazing experiences ISM offered as their reason for returning. It is an honour and a privilege to be part of a school with such rich traditions. As I look forward to welcoming your sons and daughters back to school next week, it is my sincere wish that while boarding at ISM they too will have the opportunity to develop lifelong friendships and experience the academic and cultural environment that have served so many ISM graduates well.

Boarders are welcome to return after 12.00 on Sunday, August 12th, and should be moved in by 17.30. New boarders, however, should be in residence by 15.00. There will be an important meeting for parents at 16.00 in Room 9 in the tuition block. I strongly urge both new and returning parents to attend. A welcome barbeque for boarders will take place at 18.00 in the dining hall, followed by a brief boarding orientation, house meetings, and time for unpacking. Before bed there will also be a special staff vs. student sporting challenge in Karibu Hall.

Please remember to bring completed Health and PC (Parental Consent) Forms with you to Moshi next Sunday, or send them to us digitally in advance (copies of the aforementioned are available for download at www.ismoshi.org). Students will not be able to sign off of campus until we have received a completed PC Form.

All summer I have been receiving Room Allocation Forms from students and tomorrow we will formally assign rooms. Soon thereafter Mr. Mackenzie, Mama Somaiya, and Jana Eaton will be writing students informing them of their room assignments. Please refer to the ISM website if you wish to review our rooming policy.

Furthermore, if we can assist you with travel arrangements, or if you would like us to arrange an airport pick-up, please let us know as soon as possible.

With that, I wish you a safe and restful week with your children. We look forward to seeing you on the 12th.

Yours faithfully,

Richard Eaton
