| 8 October 2007 Dear Parents, As we approach the half-term recess, Moshi is a hive of activity. D2 and S5 students have been busy with Extended Essays and Coursework, while teachers have been marking assessment tasks across the curriculum and writing reports. These will be distributed to students Wednesday, October 10th (grade cards for M1-4 & D1; grade cards and full report cards for S5 & D2). This will be followed on Friday, October 12th with parent/teacher conferences in Karibu Hall from 10.30 - 12.30 (should Friday be a national holiday, these conferences will be postponed until October 26th). We look forward to seeing you on campus. Please be sure to contact your child’s boarding parent or Jana Eaton () if we can assist with travel arrangements prior to the holidays. Boarders should be out of residence by 16.00 on October 12th unless they have made prior arrangements with their boarding parent to stay on and take the TOFEL examination on Saturday, October 13th. Boarders are welcome to return to campus after 12.00 on Sunday, October 21st. They should be back in residence by 17.00 on the 21st. Classes resume for the second half of term on Monday morning, October 22nd.. October was an exciting month for ISM residents. Four special performances took place during our weekly Wednesday Special Meals - one each week: S5 Music Students performed a number of vocal arrangements accompanied by Frances Brandon on piano; the ISM Student Band featuring the vocals of Katherine Jacobson also performed, as did D.J. Weezie, our very own Roland Ndjock Nga; the highlight of the four week block was a special concert by The Bob Chuwa Band, a group fronted by local artist Bob Chuwa, an ISM graduate. Meanwhile, the intramural sports season has begun with volleyball. Thank you to Laurence Blair, the Chair of the Activities Council for making intramural sport happen! Pictures of all of these events will be available in the upcoming edition of the Summit magazine, as well as shots and stories from a student perspective about the Boarding Fashion Show, which took place earlier this month, and the work of our Activities & Food Councils. Boarders have also enjoyed participating in Hard Labour in October. A special thanks to Sandra Riches and her team of supporting teachers for their diligent work setting up and supervising these community service weekends. Furthermore, A number of boarders, accompanied by boarding parent Andrew Mackenzie and others, trekked through the hills of the Pares this past weekend (a small mountain range outside of Moshi). This was the annual curtain raiser of the Outdoor Pursuits season. Later this term there will be hikes on both Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Those who prefer relaxing on the beach to mountain walking will be invited to join the residential community in Pangani for a weekend away from school on October 26th-28th. Mama Somaiya will be writing parents soon with more information. Two giant beanbags for each of the secondary boarding houses arrived in our container earlier this month. They have been well received by boarders. We are still waiting for new games and other resources to arrive in the second container. On another furniture related note, the construction of special mosquito net frames was completed in the primary boarding area last week. A well deserved thanks to Mr. Kimaro our woodworking instructor and part-time carpenter for his efforts in this endeavour. Sunita Somaiya and I will be away from school on October 8th-9th presenting ISM in Mwanza. Our presentation will take place at Hotel Tilapia beginning at approximately 19.30 on Tuesday the 8th. This will be followed by a visit to a local community centre on Wednesday the 9th (more details forthcoming). If you are based in the Mwanza area, please join us at one or both of these functions, as well as inviting any interested members of your community. If you have any concerns that need immediate attention while Sunita and I are away please contact Andrew Mackenzie at (), or Keiron White (). Finally, having reflected on the events of the last month, it is once again apparent that learning and living in a residential setting requires the efforts of a great number of individuals - from students, to local staff, and beyond. Can I offer a gentle word of thanks to everyone, including parents, who have made the first half-term of this school year, in my opinion, one of the best on recent record. Enjoy the holidays with your children. Sincerely, Richard Eaton Head of Boarding International School Moshi | |
