| 30 January 08 Dear Parents, Welcome to 2008! I hope you were all able to enjoy a warm and festive holiday season in Tanzania or somewhere special abroad. The New Year is off to a busy start at ISM. As I write D1 boarders and day students are in Pangani participating in a Science themed field study. They are being accompanied by boarding parent, Andrew Mackenzie, as well as several other members of the Science Department. Thank you for you understanding and cooperation in advance of this excursion. It will be a beneficial experience for all participants. Meanwhile, S5 & D2 students are sitting their IB Diploma and IGCSE mock-examinations. As this is an important time in their academic and personal lives, we have in place a structured set of examination policies. These policies help us assure that the study and living environment this time of year is conducive to the success of your children. They are reviewed bi-annually by Boarding Council and will be in place again during the May/June examination period. I have attached copies for you to peruse: S5 students | D2 On the residential education front, David Mache will be making a short presentation in February to our male residents. The theme will be "What makes a young man of quality?" We believe such sessions help us instil the values that will support your children academically and socially as they aspire to excellence on both fronts. Trevor Newman, our Geography teacher, has promised to lead a session for all residents this term on making our residential environment ‘greener’ or more environmentally friendly. We are excited about both presentations. We also have a full range of social and creative activities planned for the residential community this term. The weekend programme kicked off with a Western themed weekend that featured a thrilling horseshoe tournament and North American inspired food. The chilli was hot! This weekend two of our Australian staff members will contribute to a ‘Land Down Under’ Weekend in honour or Australia Day. Later in the term residents are eagerly anticipating yet another round of Paintball Manati (paintball will local slingshots), the fourth instalment of ISM Quiz Night, and our first ISM Rally (with mini-race cars). These events are in addition to our on-going smorgasbord of weekly activities which includes men and women’s weight training, evening swimming, badminton on Wednesday nights this term, and fortnightly family-style evenings. I hope to make it to Arusha in March for another meeting with interested parents. Any thoughts on appropriate dates and venues would be appreciated. Meanwhile, stay in touch with us and let us know how we can best support your children as they will remain ‘at the centre’ in 2008. Yours sincerely, Richard Eaton Head of Boarding International School Moshi | |
