Dear Parents,MYP Authorization ReportThe reports that we received from the International Baccalaureate Organization regarding our MYP authorization are now available to parents by download from the school website. You will need to go to the parents download page at www.ismoshi.org/pardocs and enter the new username and password that you have been given. The same password will also be needed to open the documents.Strategic PlanningThe ISM Strategic Planning Committee met for the fifth time in August. The report and documentation for this meeting is also available to download from www.ismoshi.org/pardocs.Contact InformationIn order to keep our contact information for parents up to date, we have recently sent a form to all parents of secondary students (M1-D2) requesting current details. Please return this form to your child's tutor by Friday, September 14th. The same details can also be entered online at www.ismoshi.org/contactdetails.High Frequency Radio StationLast week we installed a high frequency radio tower and unit on both campuses. This will now allow us to communicate by radio between the two campuses. Once our portable packs arrive, we will also be able to communicate with school trip groups carrying the radio.IB Diploma ResultsMany parents will already have seen the results of our IB Diploma examinations which have been available at www.ismoshi.org/dip_result.htm for some time. Although our general diploma pass rate was reasonable with 83% of diploma candidates achieving the diploma, many students achieved lower grades than had been predicted and this was largely due to the IBO significantly reducing internal assessment grades in two subjects during their moderation process. Despite an initial report on this from the IBO that we requested in July, the IBO are still unable to explain why such reductions were made and are we are currently pursuing a further enquiry with the IBO.ISM has been extremely successful in achieving high pass rates in recent years and it is unfortunate but not surprising that we cannot continue to better our results every year. In 2007 nearly all our students took the full diploma and 81% of all IB2 students achieved a diploma - this is the highest percentage we have achieved since 2002. Also our results are still higher than the school achieved during many years in the 1980s and 1990s and we look forward to strong results in 2008. IGCSE results are also given at www.ismoshi.org/igcseresult.htm. Fire Evacuation DrillsIn the first month of this school year we have conducted an evacuation drill during lesson time and students responded quickly and well. We have also conducted night time drills in the boarding houses. In general these went well but did throw up some concerns in one boarding house which we have worked to address. We are likely to have another drill in the near future.Community Service Hard LabourA large group of diploma students visited Materuni last weekend to undertake some hard labour and help in the building of a school in the village. We hope to add pictures to the website in the next few days.S5 Tarangire TripThe S5 students will be travelling to Tarangire with their Arusha counterparts this week from Wednesday 12th to Friday 14th September. The trip is to undertake some studies and to engage in team building exercises.Student CouncilThis year's Student Council met for the first time recently and elected Belinda Tindyebwa as the Chair and Kareena Bassan as the Secretary.PSAT testsPreliminary SAT tests are suitable for S5 or D1 students considering the possibility of eventually applying to university of college in North America. The results are useful for the students concerned but do not directly affect college entrance - however they form part of a process of preparing for the full SAT tests which we recommend that students take later in their D1 year. If your child would like to take these tests (at a cost of $15), please let Mrs Beveridge know before Friday. The actual PSAT tests will be held in Moshi on Saturday, 20th October - just before the end of the half term holiday.New Fees PackageI hope that all parents will have received last week's letter from the CEO informing you of the new fees package available for boarders in P3 to M4. We hope that this significant step will attract a number of new families to the school. I would like to ask all current ISM families to let others know of this package and to help us to provide the increase in our enrolment numbers that we seek. The package is described on the website at www.ismoshi.org/fees.This newsletter has been emailed to all email addresses of parents that we have on file. If you know of any parent who is not receiving the newsletter, please let me know. Keiron White Head of Campus |
