Dear Parents: Sports WeekendWe are looking forward to an extremely busy and active weekend on the Moshi Campus as we host a sports tournament for ISM sudents from both campuses and also students from International School Tanganyika (IST) in Dar es Salaam and International School of Uganda in Kampala. Sports activities start with basketball on Friday evening (7th) and are followed by football, swimming, cricket, rugby, badminton, tennis, netball, volleyball and hockey on Saturday and Sunday. The students will also be holding a dance on Saturday evening (organised by the Student Council). The full schedule of events is available to view at www.ismoshi.org/sportsweekend.pdf.GatesIn view of the large number of additional students who will be staying on campus this weekend, only the main gate entrance on Lema Road will be open for students coming on to or leaving the campus. The other gates will be closed for student use from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon.S5 Introduction to IB DiplomaToday (Thursday 6th December) we will be welcoming the Arusha Campus S5 students who will be staying the night in boarding in Moshi to experience weekday boarding life including study hall. On Friday they will join with the Moshi S5 students for a morning of IB Diploma style classes to serve as an introduction to the IB Diploma.Presentations in Dar es SalaamThis weekend ISM is providing two presentations in Dar es Salaam for prospective parents and others who may be interested to learn more about the school. On Friday, 7th December we shall be presenting at the Terrace Restaurant at Slipway at 6pm and following that with a dinner for all ISM alumni in or near Dar. On Saturday, 8th December there will be a presentation at the Mövenpick Hotel from 9am to 3pm. If you know of any families in Dar who may be interested, please encourage them to join us at any of these times.Independence DayTanzania celebrates Independence Day this Sunday, 9th December. Monday will be a normal working day.I Love to Read WeekNext week, December 10th-14th, is our annual "I Love to Read" week which will be full of events to encourage students to enjoy reading. Every morning there will be a "Drop Everything And Read" (DEAR) time. Trivia research questions will be posted in the library and students can also join in the guessing game. Students will be encouraged to recommend a book to others and to decorate classroom doors on the subject of reading.Tutor groups will compete in the "Readathon" and note the number of minutes that they spend reading in the week. Any minutes recorded will need to be countersigned by a parent or guardian and we are grateful for your support in this. On Friday, 14th December, students are encouraged to dress up as a character from their favourite book. We will also be holding a Book Sale in the library from Tuesday to Friday. Library Movie NightOn Wednesday, 12th December, the library will be showing the film A Christmas Carol from 6:45pm. Students should reserve their seats in the library in advance as space will be limited.P3/4 Residential TripToday and tomorrow, 6th and 7th December, our P3/P4 class have an overnight camping trip with their counterparts from Arusha Campus. They are expected to return to Moshi by 2pm on Friday.M3/4 Maths ChallengeCongratulations to all the M3 and M4 students from both campuses who took part in a Mathematics Challenge in Moshi yesterday. The various tasks included logical thinking skills, applications to life and a series of mathematical questions. Many thanks to our student teacher, Todd Richert, for the fantastic organisation of the event.A Christmas EveningNext Thursday, 13th December, we will be holding a Christmas evening celebration in the Dining Hall. The primary students will be presenting their drama production, Christmas Chaos in Lapland and students from M4 and S5 will also be performing. All are welcome.Men at ArmsThere are now only a few tickets remaining for the school production of Men at Arms which will be held at El Rancho restaurant on Saturday and Sunday, 15th and 16th December. Tickets cost TSh 12,000/- for adults and TSh 8,000/- for children under 13 years and include a buffet dinner at the restaurant; tickets are available from reception in the main office on both Moshi and Arusha campuses. Please hurry to reserve your places. We will be asking parents to help us to ensure that no ISM student may consume alcohol in El Rancho on those evenings.Boarders' Christmas DinnerOn Tuesday, 18th December, the boarding students will be clebrating the end of term with a special dinner designed to mark the Christmas / New Year holiday season.Secondary ReportsAll Secondary students in M1 to M4 and in D1 will receive full reports this term covering the period from August to December. Students in S5 and D2 (who received full reports in October) will receive a grade card only this month and will receive a full report in March. Reports and grade cards will be distributed to students on Monday, 17th December.Secondary Parent MeetingsParents of all secondary students are invited to meet their child's teachers at parent-teacher meetings which will be held in Karibu Hall from 10:30am to 12 noon on Wednesday, 19th December. We hope that we will be able to meet as many parents as possible at that time.End of Term ArrangementsClasses will finish for secondary students at 10:15am on Wednesday, 19th December and students will be free to leave school at that time. Boarders are asked to have left school by 4pm on 19th December - please contact Richard Eaton if you need any help with travel arrangements. Primary classes will finish at 12 noon on that day.ABRSM Theory ExamsStudents who wish to register for the ABRSM theory examinations must inform Mr Jones by Friday, 14th December at the latest. The exams will take place in Moshi (and Arusha) on Wednesday, 27th February.Holiday Use of CampusMany of the facilities on campus have been reserved for use by a visiting group from 23rd to 25th December inclusive. As a result, the campus will be closed to all visitors on those days. I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.School Office during School HolidaysDuring the school holidays the office will be open on all working days (excluding weekends and public holidays) from 7:30am to 5pm. However the office will be closed during the period from 24th December to 1st January inclusive.Term Two 2007/08Classes re-start on Tuesday, 15th January at 7:30am. Boarders are requested to be in school by 5pm on Monday, 14th January.
