International School Moshi Moshi Campus News - 15th August 2008 |
|
Dear Parents, The school has got off to a good start for this school year and I would especially like to thank the returning students as well as boarding staff and teachers for having welcomed our eighty new students to the campus. We are hoping that they will all settle quickly and successfully. MYP Introduction
Thanks to those parents who attended our introduction to the MYP last Tuesday for parents of children in M1 and other parents of new students in M1-M5. Please find attached to this newsletter the first issue of The Moshi MYP Minute with which we hope to provide more information to families about the MYP throughout this school year.M5 Symposium
This special event for the M5 students from both campuses will now take place on 11th and 12th September. M5 students from Arusha Campus will be joining our Moshi students in a combined event on those days. Parents will receive full details shortly.Outdoor Pursuits
As you are aware the school runs an extensive Outdoor Pursuits programme for Secondary Students. A copy of the students' OP Handbook which contains information about the programme can be downloaded from the school website at www.ismoshi.org/OP. The dates for the OP trips for this term are as follows;
If your child would like to participate in these trips they should sign up for them on the notice boards at school. When they are signing up for a trip they should consider if they are qualified to participate on the trip, or are able to qualify by completing a lower level trip earlier in the term, They should also consider if the date clashes with another event, for example birthday parties. There were several occasions last year where students signed up for a trip, without checking to see if they were able to go on it, and then neglected to inform us that they would not be able to take up their place until just before the trip departed. Unfortunately, they left it too late for the students who were on the reserve list to arrange to go. It is the school policy that students who do pull out too late for us to find a replacement will be expected to pay the full cost of participating in the trip. There are occasions when a student has to pull out of a trip for medical reasons. We fully support these decisions and will not expect the student to pay and will reserve them a place on the next trip of a similar level of difficulty. If you have any questions regarding the OP programme, please contact Ben Wiggins: on the Moshi Campus or Charles Schofield on the Arusha Campus. PRIMARY NEWS
Dear Parents/Caregivers,On behalf of the Primary staff I would like to thank all the parents who attended yesterday's "Meet the Teachers Evening". We hope that everyone was able to receive a copy of the Primary Handbook which clearly explains what we do in the PYP and the organization of our programmes on both campuses. We hope to organize an information evening once a term to help everyone develop a better understanding of the PYP at ISM. This year we hope parents will take advantage of our open door policy where by you are most welcome to participate in our class programmes regularly. Suggestions from you to help us reflect on the quality of our programme are always appreciated. Parent Volunteers
Next week some teachers may ask for parent volunteers to assist them during class swimming lessons, particularly with the younger children. It would be ideal if we could have 1 adult to 4 students for non-confident swimmers and 1 adult to 6 students for confident swimmers. Please see the class teacher if you have any concerns.Primary Polo Shirts
We normally expect all primary students to wear an ISM polo shirt for classes. Unfortunately our new supplier has failed to deliver polo shirts for the start of the term and we may need to wait another couple of weeks until the new shirts arrive. There are still a very small number of shirts available for sale in reception, but we will not require primary students to wear polo shirts until the new stock is available.Primary Boarding
Teresa Margheri our Primary Boarding Parent, will be doing Art and Craft as an After-School club with the boarders on Wednesdays from 3.30pm-4.20pm. Teresa would like to extend an invitation to other interested students in P4-6 to join them. She will be assisted by Geraldine Pitot and Marie Laure who are both parents of students at our school. After-School Clubs
Thank you for returning the selection forms promptly. Due to the high demand for some activities, you may find that your child has been placed in a different group from his/her order of preferences. Other factors we needed to consider in allocation were student ability and the maximum numbers per group. We have tried to accommodate most of the children's choices.Old Magazines and Newspapers
We would like to ask if you have any old newspapers, magazines (fashion, national geographic etc.), which you could donate for cutting and pasting activities in KG. Please drop them in Rm 15.Curriculum Focus
This year we will be reviewing our Maths and P.E. curriculum across the three programmes PYP, MYP and DP.In the Primary Handbook, year level expectations for each class are included along with the units of inquiry. For those of you who attended the Maths information evening last year, you received copies of the detailed Maths expectations for each class. This year teachers will have a few copies available in their classrooms for parents to read. Since we use an integrated approach to teaching and learning, teachers will also have a few copies of the detailed Language year level expectations available for interested parents to read. Next week, copies of the Learner Profile (Student version) will be sent out. I hope you all enjoyed the first week of school. Have a good weekend! Rosi Uluiviti Head of Primary, PYP Coordinator Visiting Schools Programme
Two press articles appeared during July reporting on two of the many schools that stayed at ISM during the long holiday and undertook community service activities in the area. A BBC report describes the visit of Tauntons College from Southampton, England and Abu Dhabi's paper "The National" tells of the visit of Al-Mizhar American Academy for Girls (with some inaccuracies!). In addition to these schools we were also pleased to have welcomed visiting groups from International School Berne (Switzerland), International School Nice (France), Amman Baccalaureate School (Jordan), International School Helsinki (Finland), International School Lausanne (Switzerland), St Paul's Grammar School, Sydney (Australia), Scotch College, Perth (Australia), and Munich International School (Germany) - all during June and July. Many thanks to Jana Eaton and Afzal Paliwala whose work to manage these groups does so much to ensure their success.Parent Association Picnics
The PA are organising two picnics to welcome all (parents and teachers) to the start of the new school year. These will be held in
Umoja Arts Centre, Arusha
You are warmly invited to the opening of a painting exhibition by Hussein Halfawi and Eltayeb, 22 August from 6pm onwards at Arusha Masai Café, close to the AICC. The evening will also feature jazz by David Seng'enge on guitar and from New Orleans, ISM's recently arrived music teacher, Khari Allen Lee on saxophone. [This event is managed by the Umoja Arts Centre in Arusha and not by ISM].Keiron White Head of Moshi Campus | Available on the web...
