International School Moshi Moshi Campus News - 22nd August 2008
Dear Parents,
Two weeks into the new school year and nearly all of our new students are in school and settling well. This weekend we are looking forward to the Parent Association picnic in Arusha Campus and also awaiting the picnic at TPC in Moshi next weekend - details below. Please let me know if you would like me to send this newsletter to any other email addresses.
Parent Associations Picnics
The ISM Parent Association (PA) is hosting a picnic at the swimming pool in ISM Arusha Campus tomorrow, Saturday, August 23rd betwen 10:30am and 2:30pm. All ISM parents are welcome to meet other parents and our teachers. Please bring food to eat or to share. We hope to have many members of the ISM community present.
For those who cannot get to Arusha, there will also be a picnic next week on Saturday, August 30th from 12 noon at TPC near Moshi. Again, we hope that many Moshi-based parents and families will be able to attend. If you need directions for how to get to TPC or if you need help with transport, please send me an email. Please bring food and drink for this occasion.

Primary Swimming
We would like to thank all parents who have offered to help during class swimming sessions this week. It has been a challenging experience for everyone particularly with the cold weather. Students who have a cold and are coughing or have a running nose will not be allowed into the pool for health and safety reasons.
P1/P2 Class Trip
P1/2 students are planning a trip to the Masaai village on Thursday 28th August. Narelle will be sending out details and consent slips early next week.
Goal Setting in Primary
Teachers have spent the first two weeks assessing students in different learning areas. Students have also reflected on what they think their strengths are and areas where they would like to improve.
To assist teachers, students and parents in identifying each child's social and academic goals, day students will be receiving an observation and reflection form on how you see your child at home, on Monday 25th September. If your primary child is a boarder or if you would prefer to complete this form online, please click here to be directed to the website.
Your child will also bring a simplified copy of
the Learner Profile
transdisciplinary skills
Habits of mind which you could refer to, while helping your child decide on their goals.
We would appreciate all forms to be completed and returned to the class teachers by the end of the week (Friday 29th August). This will be the basis of our first parent, teacher meeting with students.
Primary Clubs
Students have had an opportunity to attend a variety of clubs this week and make a final choice about clubs. Mr. Holt and Sabini have made several changes to the Beginners and Intermediate swimming. An updated list of clubs is posted in the breezeway. Please check the list for these changes. I will be helping Sabini on Mondays for Beginning Swimmers.
Reminders Hiking Club: All students in the Hiking Club will need to complete and return their consent form to participate in the walks outside the school campus. Athletics: Students in the Athletics Club will need to wear proper "runners" and sports attire. Beginners Swimming: Please ensure that your child is punctual and has changed into their swimmers/togs when they arrive at the pool; likewise at the end of the sessions parents are responsible for supervising their children.

Ramadan
The Islamic Holy month of Ramadan will begin in about 10 days time and during this month many of our Muslim students will be fasting. Next week we will hold a meeting with all affected students to discuss arrangements. All students who are fasting will be provided with breakfast to eat in their boarding houses early in the morning - they will also have a special supper a bit later than the other students every evening. Please contact the Senior Boarding Parent, Sunita Somaiya if you have any questions about these arrangements.
M5 Leadership Symposium
We have planned an exciting and challenging beginning of year event for our M5 class. Next month on September 11th and 12th, M5 students from both campuses will come together for a two-day symposium on leadership. Starting with the proposition that our teens want and need more independence and responsibility in their lives, we have assembled a programme of workshops and lectures on the theme of leadership. The aim is to help our students be more accomplished, knowledgeable and committed - and have some fun in the process! Students will overnight in our Kishari House - a special boarding facility normally reserved for visiting schools from other parts of the world. It should be a challenging, engaging and entertaining excursion for the students, and hopefully will help them take charge of their lives and steer a course for success and great achievements.
