Moshi Campus News - 5th September 2008
Dear Parents,

With four weeks of the term now gone and less than four weeks to go until the October break, the campus is now working hard and students appear well settled and productive. I hope that you are finding these weekly newsletters informative - please let me know on if you would like to add another emailing address.
Library Night
Our first Library Night of the term will be Wednesday, September 10th at 7pm. Attendance will be for M4s and up. Guest speakers will share some of their most recent recommendations and read short excerpts. Students are strongly encouraged to also participate by making recommendations and reading a short piece. Any parent who would like to participate can let Mrs. Sutherland know by contacting her at .
.
M5 Symposium
Parents of students in M5 will have received a separate email giving full details of our M5 Leadership Symposium taking place in Moshi on Thursday & Friday, 11th-12th September.
Afternoon Sports
Several of the younger students (M3 and below) are arriving for the afternoon sports at 4.30pm exhausted, dehydrated and not in a state for productive sessions. One of the reasons is that they are finishing lessons at about 2pm and spending the next 2 hours playing football in Karibu Hall or in the sun. If your child is a day student, please help us to encourage them to use the library and computer centre when they are free in the afternoons and to be ready to play their sports later in the day.
Physical Education
As the days have become hotter this last week, it is noticeable that many students are arriving to PE without having eaten or having consumed enough fluids for breakfast or throughout the rest of the morning. Please can you encouage you child to 'fill up on fuel' before they come to school.

It is also appropriate for strudents to bring sun hats and wear sun protection cream during PE lessons.
The PE staff are aware that many students are fasting for Ramadan at present. We suggest that these students try to participate in the lessons as much as they can, without placing too much stress on their bodies. All classes are undertaking athletics at the moment and, as such, it is not expected for these students to be working on track events, but it is felt that they could manage throwing events.
Kilimanjaro Rugby Sevens
The Kilimanjaro Rugby 7s, which features an adult tournament for clubs from Tanzania and Kenya, and an under-19 schools tournament, will now be held on Saturday, 4th October and not on 11th as previously advertised.
ISM Annual Doubles Tennis Tournament
Open to students, staff, and parents on Saturday, September 13th. TSh 5,000/- per team entry. Sign up as a team. If you don't have a partner, sign up as a single and a partner will hopefully be assigned to you. Sign-ups are in the breezeway and staff room, but you can also contact Mrs. Sutherland by email at . The deadline for signing up is Thursday, September 11th at 4pm.
Swedish Teaching
One of our IB Diploma students is seeking a Swedish language teacher for her diploma course. If you know of someone who could help, please contact Alastair Brandon, the Diploma Coordinator, on .
Music Instrumental Lessons
If your child is receiving individual music instrumental lessons this term, you should have received (or shortly will receive) an invoice for this term's lessons. We are very pleased that 65 students have requested individual lessons this term which represents a strong level of interest in music on the campus. Our concert planned for November promises to be very full!
SAT and TOEFL
Students in D2 who are planning to study in the USA will probably need strong SAT scores to enable them to enter a good university. If they did not take SAT tests last school year or if their scores were lower than they should be, we recommend taking the SAT test again on November 1st. Registration forms are completed online and paid for by credit card. If you do not have a credit card available and your child needs help to pay after registering, please contact Keiron White at least a week before the final deadline of 22nd September.

Similarly many D2 students may want to take TOEFL tests in November. The registration deadline for these is 1st October - please contact Keiron White at least a week before this if help is needed to arrange payment.
Idd el Fittr
At the end of the Islamic Holy month of Ramadan, there are two days of national holiday to celebrate the event. The dates of this holiday will not be announced until the night immediately before the holiday (when the moon has been sighted) which has caused some difficulties for some families. This year ISM has planned to celebrate the Idd on Thursday and Friday, 2nd and 3rd October. Therefore there WILL be classes on Wednesday, 1st October irrespective of any official announcements and we will expect all students to attend on this day. Of course, Muslim students will be excused attendance at school if their own celebrations of Idd occur earlier than this.
Wednesday, 1st October
There will be classes and an assembly for all students on Wednesday, 1st October from 7:30am to 10:15am. After this time students will be free to return home. From 10:35 to 12 noon there will be meetings for parents of secondary students and their teachers in Karibu Hall, aimed at providing an opportunity for you to discuss your child's progress with his/her teachers. Primary teachers will also be available from 10:35am to meet with parents of children in their class.
International Literacy Day
Monday, September 8th is "International Literacy Day". To celebrate literacy in the primary school we will be organising cooperative learning experiences across the year levels and in our individual classes.

Progressive writing: The day will start with a progressive writing activity, which involves creating a story whereby each class plans and writes a different part of the story. P1/2 will share the final product on Friday 12th September during their assembly.

Buddy reading: P5/6 students will do "buddy" reading with P1/2 students, and P3/4 students will do "buddy" reading with KG students.
Primary Polo Shirts
After a long delay, we are now pleased that the primary ISM Polo shirts have arrived from Arusha. The new shirts are a higher quality than those available last year and come in a new range of colours. Children's shirts cost TSh 18,000/- each and are available from Anita, the receptionist in the main office, from Monday, 8th September.
PYP Curriculum Corner
The PYP curriculum corner has been attached to this email for all parents with children in primary.
Primary Assemblies
We'd like to thank all parents for regularly attending our assemblies. Most of our presentations provide opportunities to find out what students are learning in the different year levels. The shift we will be trying to make this year would be to use our assemblies for whole-school learning experiences using a more interactive approach in our presentations. Well done to our rap stars and quiz masters in P3/4 and our budding authors in P5/6!
P3/4 Trip
Ray and the P3/4 students should be commended for their fine effort and commitment last year when they organised a sponsored run to raise funds for mosquito nets. The event was the action component in their unit of inquiry on "Children's Rights and Responsibilities". From the funds raised, P3/4 students were able to purchase and donate 60 mosquito nets on Thursday, 4th September, when they visited Light in Africa orphanage at Boma Ng'ombe.
Primary Ballroom Dancing Club
Students in the ballroom dancing club will start their first lesson on Thursday 18th September in Karibu Hall. Amanda Kirk, who is a former Australian National Ballroom dancer, will be taking these classes.
Hats
Now with the weather getting warmer please ensure that your child has a hat in school and a water bottle. Teachers are enforcing a "no hat, no play" policy on the primary playground.
Primary Athletics
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, our primary school Athletics Day will be held on Tuesday 30th October. To end the day we would like to organise a shared lunch/BBQ at the pool. Details will be sent out closer to the date.
Head Lice
On a pro-active note, with the weather warming up students will be using the pool more often, Could you please keep an eye out for head lice? School policy requires students to remain at home if they have head lice and to get it treated before returning to school.
Outdoor Pursuits - Pares Mountains
Our second OP trip this term is a Level One trip to the Pares Mountains on Saturday/Sunday, September 13th and 14th.
