Moshi Campus News - 10th October 2008
Dear Parents,

We are looking forward to the students returning to school next week for what promises to be an extremely busy half term in the run up to the end of 2008. I hope you have enjoyed the break with your children.
Public Holiday
Tuesday, 14th October is a national holiday to remember Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. However the campus will instead be closed on Monday, 13th October with the main office, library and oomputer centre all closed on Monday. The office, library and IT Centre will be open as usual on Tuesday, 14th October.
Return to School
We would like to request all boarders to return on Tuesday, 14th October by 5pm if possible. If you need help with transport and have not already advised us, please contact Sunita Somaiya on . Classes will re-start for all students at 7:30am on Wednesday, 15th October.
Swimming Pool
The swimming pool is closed for the next couple of days for some maintenance work. We hope to be able to re-open the pool at 2pm on Sunday, 12th October.
Website Additions
Photos of the primary sports day held on 30th September are now available to view at www.ismoshi.org/psport.htm. Also on the school website are photos from the inter-schools athletics tournament in Arusha on 27th September. Click on www.ismoshi.org/arusport08.htm to view these.
Young Life
Young Life is a Christian ministry organisation that reaches out to teenagers through their volunteers and activities. They are planning to hold activities for ISM students in M3 and above at weekends in a teacher's house on the Moshi Campus. Please note that boarding parents will usually give boarding students permission to attend these activities, but if you are not comfortable with your child attending, please let his/her boarding parent know this. The school does not organise these activities and we have no direct link to Young Life. Further information on the Young Life organisation is available at www.younglife.org.
PSAT, SAT and TOEFL
M5 students are now all registered and hopefully ready to take the PSAT tests on Wednesday morning, 15th October. Many D2 students have also registered to take SAT tests on 1st November and TOEFL tests on 8th November. The final set of SAT tests for this term will be on 6th December - registration for these tests will close on 5th November. Students who will need help with credit card payments must see Mr White before 30th October.
M2 in Pangani
The M2 students from both campuses will be undertaking field work at the school's study centre in Pangani on the Indian Ocean coast from 20th to 24th October. Parents of M2 students will receive a letter with more details next week. Pictures of previous trips can be viewed at www.ismoshi.org/pangani.htm.
Paul Taylor
We now say farewell to Paul Taylor who has been teaching History in the first half of this term as part of his teacher training with the University of Northern Iowa. We wish him all the best for his last set of teaching in Iringa and his return to college to complete his programme.
Russian Performance
Pavel Khlopovski, Russian guitarist, will be performing on the Arusha Campus on Sunday, 2nd November. Tickets will be on sale soon. See www.ismoshi.org/guitarnights.htm for more details.
Outdoor Pursuits
November is the peak month for our Outdoor Pursuits trips, and we have the following trips planned for this half of term:
  • Nov 1-2: Mandara - first hut on Kilimanjaro. Excellent trip for beginners to the programme involving a one night stay on the mountain
  • Nov 7-9: Little Meru - a level two trip to the smaller summit on Mount Meru, involving one night's stay at Miriakamba and one night in Saddle Hut.
  • Nov 13-16: Rongai Route - a demanding level four trip climbing Kilimanjaro from the north side and sleeping in tents on the mountain on the way up.
  • Nov 20-23: Mawenzi Hut - a level three trip on Kilimanjaro to Horombo Hut and then taking a day walk to the small tin hut at the base of Mawenzi - the lower peak.
  • Nov 26-30: Uhuru Peak - a challenging level five trip to the summit of Kilimanjaro.
All students new to the school or new to ISM's OP programme and who choose to participate must first undertake a Level One trip and, if successful, they may then sign up for higher level trips, gradually moving up the levels. There will be more trips later this year in March/April/May. We are very grateful to the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) who allow us to undertake these trips at certain times of the year outside the main tourist season.
