International School Moshi
Moshi Campus News - 25th October 2008
Dear Parents,

Our M2 students have now returned from a successful and enjoyable field study trip based at the school's house on the coast in Pangani and some of the M5-D2 students are spending this weekend helping to build a kitchen for a primary school at Kidachini. With a P5/6 trip coming up this week and the November Outdoor Pursuits programme getting started, a busy period in school is now ahead.
P5/P6 Trip
On Thursday and Friday, 30th and 31st October, the P5/P6 students from both campuses are travelling around Mount Meru to view the different landscapes and landforms around the mountain. Our Moshi students will spend Thursday night with families in Arusha and will return to Moshi on Friday afternoon.
Diwali
Tuesday, 28th November is Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, which is one of the major Hindu festivals of the year. We wish all families a Happy Diwali and would like to encourage students to wear Indian dress at school on Tuesday in celebration. Photos from last year's Diwali are at www.ismoshi.org/diwali07.htm. Wednesday 29th November is New Year's Day and we are arranging for Hindu boarding students to celebrate at the Temple that evening.
Rummage Sale
We will be holding a Rummage Sale in Karibu Hall on Saturday, 1st November from 10am to 12 noon. This is an opportunity to sell second hand items that you have been longing to part with. If you are moving on from Moshi then here is a chance to sell your stored up items. All proceeds from table rentals will go towards the Model United Nations programme at the school. Please click on www.ismoshi.org/rummage.pdf to get full details of the event and how to rent a table.
Upcoming Exams
  • Saturday, 1st November - SAT test Students have already registered for the SAT tests, although it is sometimes possible to admit unregistered students as standby candidates on payment of an additional standby fee.
  • Tuesday, 4th November - IB Diploma Swahili B written exams. Some of our D2 students will be taking this exam in November as the IB does not make the exam available in May.
  • Saturday, 8th November - TOEFL test. Students have already registered for this and standby testing is not permitted. All candidates MUST have their passport with them to ensure admission.
  • Saturday, 6th December - SAT test. Another opportunity to take the SAT. Registrations for this test will close on 31st October. Students who wish to register and need assistance with payment must see me, Keiron White, by Wednesday, 29th October at the very latest.
Outdoor Pursuits - Mandara
On 1st/2nd November a group of 10 students from each campus together with teachers will climb to Mandara, the first hut on Kilimanjaro. This is a good starter trip for students who want to take part in our OP programme. Other OP trips will take place throughout November (see below). Photos of a previous Mandara trip are at www.ismoshi.org/mandara6.htm.
MYP Minute
Parents with children in M1-M5 will find the MYP Minute attached to this email. This explains how your child is graded in the various subjects within the MYP. Others can view the file at www.ismoshi.org/ParentNews081025_myp.pdf.
New Teacher
We would like to welcome Savannah Conlee who is a student teacher from the University of Northern Iowa. She will be working with the P1/2 and P3/4 classes for the rest of this term.

Primary After-School Clubs
After-school clubs has got off to a good start and most students have decided which clubs they would prefer to participate in for the rest of the term. Clubs are offered as an opportunity for students to participate in extra-curricular activities. This is a voluntary programme offered by the teachers, D2 students and other members of the community.

This year the primary staff will be taking turns to coordinate Clubs each term. We have put in a lot of effort into providing a wider range of clubs to cater for all year levels, particularly for the younger students. This term Narelle is the Clubs coordinator. If parents would like to see more activities offered, please let Narelle know what you could offer as an after-school club for next term.

Netball Club (Tuesdays, 2.35pm-3.20pm)
The netball club is being offered by Risha who is a D2 student. Since she will be away, there will be no netball club this week (Tuesday, 28th October). This club resumes as scheduled the following Tuesday (4th November).
The Learner Profile & Invitations
One of the Learner Profile attributes we are developing with primary students at school is to be Caring. Some of the attitudes in our programme that students develop and are encouraged to portray through their learning experiences are
  • empathy (walking in someone else's shoes)
  • tolerance
  • appreciation and respect
We would like to ask parents of primary children to be mindful of these when distributing invitations for birthdays, sleepovers etc. Only invitation cards which include the whole class should be distributed at school.
Hallowe'en
The primary school will celebrate Hallowe'en on Thursday, 6th November. All the students (and teachers, I'm sure) will dress up in costumes and parade around the school before going trick or treating at staff houses on the school grounds at 5 pm. This will be followed by a disco at the social centre from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. We would like to add a BBQ dinner around a bonfire starting at 6:30 p.m. and are looking for parents interested in helping out.

The theme would remain Hallowe'en (which is quickly becoming a bigger party event than New Year's Eve in North America!). But it will also be a fundraiser for ISM's scholarship fund. This would give parents a chance to meet the ISM scholarship students and learn more about the programme as well as raise a bit of money for the fund. Tickets for the BBQ are TSh 5,000/- per person.

My idea is to ask each family to donate a dish - either salad or dessert. I have a number of Hallowe'en themed recipes for parents inclined to try something fun, new and different or you could try recipes at familyfun.go.com/recipes/special/specialfeature/halloween_ms_food/. I will arrange for hot dogs (sausages) buns, condiments (ketchup, onions, mustard, mayonnaise, hot sauce etc...), drinks, as well as apples, so kids can bob for apples (a North American Halloween tradition). You can email me at with any thoughts, suggestions or ideas. Or drop by the development office, across from Anita in reception and pick up a copy of some recipes. All primary students and parents are welcome to participate. (That includes costumes!)
Thanks
Kate Robertson
Development Officer

Outdoor Pursuits
November is the peak month for our Outdoor Pursuits trips, and we have the following trips planned for this half of term:
  • Nov 1-2: Mandara - first hut on Kilimanjaro. Excellent trip for beginners to the programme involving a one night stay on the mountain
  • Nov 7-9: Little Meru - a level two trip to the smaller summit on Mount Meru, involving one night's stay at Miriakamba and one night in Saddle Hut.
  • Nov 13-16: Rongai Route - a demanding level four trip climbing Kilimanjaro from the north side and sleeping in tents on the mountain on the way up.
  • Nov 20-23: Mawenzi Hut - a level three trip on Kilimanjaro to Horombo Hut and then taking a day walk to the small tin hut at the base of Mawenzi - the lower peak.
  • Nov 26-30: Uhuru Peak - a challenging level five trip to the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Full details of these OP trips are shown at www.ismoshi.org/opcal.pdf. If your child is participating in these trips, please check this calendar for details of pre-trip meetings, and times to collect and return equipment. With so many trips taking place, it is important that all equipment is both collected and returned on time ready for re-issue.
Bicycles in School
Many day students ride to school by bike and many boarders keep their own bikes in school. In general, bicycles are usually safe on campus, but we have had one incident of a bike going missing. We would therefore strongly advise all students to park their bikes in one of the designated places and to ensure that bikes are kept locked when not being used.
Sending Money to School
Many parents ask how they can make payments to the school or to their child if they are not in Moshi. Often these payments may be for your child's pocket money, to pay for a trip or an exam or for some special lessons, or even for fees. There are a number of methods available:
  • If you are in Tanzania, you can pay money in TSh, US$ or GBP, to any branch of Standard Chartered Bank for credit to the school. Account details are given on all fee invoices or are available from myself or from our accounts office at . Please fax or email the stamped paying-in slip to the school after making the payment.
  • You can also make transfers in US$ to our account with Citibank in the USA, or in GBP to our account with Bank of Ireland in the UK. If you do this, please and/or myself with details so that we can ensure that the payment is properly credited.
  • Another convenient method for smaller payments is to pay online by credit card. Please go to www.ismoshi.org/paypal.htm to make secure online payments. The 5% charge for credit card transactions may be less than the bank charges for a relatively small transaction.
Please also remember that many parents who pay fees by instalments will have a new payment due by 1st November.
Parent Association AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the ISM Parent Association will be held at KIA Lodge on Wednesday, November 19th at 3:45pm (Apologies for the incorrect time in last week's newsletter!). Any parent who has a child enrolled in either campus of ISM is warmly invited to attend. The meeting will review the year just concluded and elect new members to the PA Committee. More details will follow soon.
Russian Guitarist
Pavel Khlopovski, Russian guitarist, will be performing on the Arusha Campus on Sunday, 2nd November. Some tickets are still available from ISM Arusha Campus at a cost of TSh 5000/- per person. See www.ismoshi.org/guitarnights.htm for more details. There will be a red caviar and vodka tasting for those interested in trying a Russian tradition. Wine and snacks will also be available on sale.
House needed
If you know of a house to rent in Moshi suitable for a single person, could you please let me know on .
