Moshi Campus News - 2nd November 2008
Dear Parents,

Our P5/6 students had an excellent trip near Mount Meru last week and the first trip of the November OP set returned from a successful climb to Mandara this afternoon. On Friday the next OP trip will be heading to summit Little Meru.
Primary Diwali Assembly
Thank you to Mama Sumaiya and Mrs. Dinavahi for organising the Diwali assembly. Last week we enjoyed the opportunity to see a Rangoli design drawn using coloured rice and ugali flour done by Mrs. Pooja Aggarwal. Everyone also enjoyed the Indian dance put on by some of the M1-M3 girls; all credit goes to Dimple in D1 for organising that. We look forward to P3/4 and Ray leading our assembly this week.
Primary Hallowe'en Event - Thursday, 6th November
Parents of primary students will find a note attached to this email with a return slip for parents to indicate
  • their BBQ orders for the evening.
  • whether they will be able to provide either a salad or dessert

To ensure that everyone is catered for at the BBQ please return all slips to the teachers on Monday 3rd November. Tickets are TSh 5000/-. Tickets will be reserved according to pre-orders. A copy of the reply slip is also available to doanload from our website.

PYP Workshop - Assessment
Parents are invited to attend a PYP assessment workshop on Wednesday 12th November from 5pm -6pm in Room 16. The focus will be on
  • how we assess and report to parents
  • what we assess and report to parents
This is an opportunity for parents to provide informal feedback and seek clarification on current practices.
College Fair
On Friday, 7th November, we will be hosting a College Fair attended by a number of US and Canadian colleges. The following are expected to attend: Columbia University, Brown, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Michigan State, Truman State, Ohio Wesleyan, Colgate, College of St Scholastica, Manhattanville College, Foothill & DeAnza Colleges, Eugene Lang College, York University, Thompson Rivers, Carleton, Saskatchewan.
This will be an impressive line-up and an excellent opportunity for students in D1 and D2 who are planning to study in North America to approach colleges for information and advice. M5 students would also benefit from attending to learn more.
Upcoming Exams
  • Tuesday, 4th November - IB Diploma Swahili B written exams. Some of our D2 students will be taking this exam in November as the IB does not make the exam available in May.
  • Saturday, 8th November - TOEFL test. Students have already registered for this and standby testing is not permitted. All candidates MUST have their passport with them to ensure admission.
  • Saturday, 6th December - SAT test. In-school registrations for this test have now closed although private registrations can continue until Wednesday.
Outdoor Pursuits - Little Meru
On 7th-9th November a group of students from each campus together with teachers will climb to Little Meru, the smaller peak on Mount Meru. Meru is a beautiful mountain to climb, but is also steep and we wish all the best to this weekend's climbers. Other OP trips will take place throughout November (see below). Photos of the 2006 Little Meru trip are at www.ismoshi.org/littlemeru.htm.
Outdoor Pursuits
November is the peak month for our Outdoor Pursuits trips, and we have the following trips planned for this half of term:
  • Nov 7-9: Little Meru - a level two trip to the smaller summit on Mount Meru, involving one night's stay at Miriakamba and one night in Saddle Hut.
  • Nov 13-16: Rongai Route - a demanding level four trip climbing Kilimanjaro from the north side and sleeping in tents on the mountain on the way up.
  • Nov 20-23: Mawenzi Hut - a level three trip on Kilimanjaro to Horombo Hut and then taking a day walk to the small tin hut at the base of Mawenzi - the lower peak.
  • Nov 26-30: Uhuru Peak - a challenging level five trip to the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Full details of these OP trips are shown at www.ismoshi.org/opcal.pdf. If your child is participating in these trips, please check this calendar for details of pre-trip meetings, and times to collect and return equipment. With so many trips taking place, it is important that all equipment is both collected and returned on time ready for re-issue.
Music Concert
There will be a music concert held in Karibu Hall on Friday, 14th November as an opportunity for our students to show the skills that they have been acquiring. More details to follow.
Parent Association AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the ISM Parent Association will be held at KIA Lodge on Wednesday, November 19th at 3:45pm. Any parent who has a child enrolled in either campus of ISM is warmly invited to attend. The meeting will review the year just concluded and elect new members to the PA Committee. Nominations for new members to the PA Committee must be received ny 12th November.
Fees
The due date for payment of fees for the second term (for many parents who are paying fees by instalments) passed on 1st November.
