International School Moshi
Moshi Campus News - 9th November 2008
Dear Parents,

Congratulations to all those students who took part in this weekend's Outdoor Pursuits trip to Little Meru; it was a hard trip for some, but all reached the peak. The highlight of our week ahead is the Music Concert to be held in Karibu Hall on Friday. And there's another OP trip planned for the weekend.
Music Concert
Many of our students will be performing in the Music Concert in Karibu Hall this coming Friday, 14th November at 7pm. All parents and friends are welcome to come and support our performers.
Outdoor Pursuits - Rongai Route
On Thursday, 13th November, a group of students and teachers from both campuses will be undertaking to climb over the saddle on Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route. This is a difficult walk involving two nights camping on the mountain and we wish the whole group well.
Outdoor Pursuits
There are still three more OP trips planned for this month as follows:
  • Nov 13-16: Rongai Route - a demanding level four trip climbing Kilimanjaro from the north side and sleeping in tents on the mountain on the way up.
  • Nov 20-23: Mawenzi Hut - a level three trip on Kilimanjaro to Horombo Hut and then taking a day walk to the small tin hut at the base of Mawenzi - the lower peak.
  • Nov 26-30: Uhuru Peak - a challenging level five trip to the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Full details of these OP trips are shown at www.ismoshi.org/opcal.pdf. If your child is participating in these trips, please check this calendar for details of pre-trip meetings, and times to collect and return equipment. With so many trips taking place, it is important that all equipment is both collected and returned on time ready for re-issue.
Hallowe'en
Thanks to everyone for making the 2008 Primary Hallowe'en Event a smashing success! Even though it was a week later than the real thing, that didn't bother the students who came dressed in fabulous costumes. About 60 kids participated in the trick or treat route across campus and Ankur tells me there were plenty of sweets left for the last group to head out. We sold 72 tickets and made a profit of TSh 197,000/- for the ISM Scholarship Fund. Thank you, especially to all the parents, staff, caregivers and students who pitched in and participated. It couldn't have gone so smoothly without you. Asante sana to the five scholarship students and Mhula for getting into the Hallowe'en spirit and helping out. The bonfire was great, the salads and desserts were plentyful and delicious. I apologize for the lack of forks and the few burned hotdogs. Kudos to Jane Barnett and her talented art students who carved brains out of watermelons. They got lots of compliments (from "yuck!" and "gross" to "how cool!"). The only complaint I heard from the kids was that the party wasn't long enough. The good ones never are. Please forward any photos to .
Thanks,
Kate Robertson
Development Officer
Counselling
We are pleased to welcome Dr Bonaventura Balige to the school to provide some counselling services to our students. Dr Balige will be available in the library to any student who wishes to speak with him on Tuesday afternoons from 3pm to 5pm - no appointments will be needed. His first visit took place last week. Students who wish or need to be referred for more regular formal counselling sessions will also be able to see Dr Balige at other times by appointment and by arrangement with their parents.
Student Peer Counselling
A group of diploma students has established a peer counselling arrangement whereby they have made themselves available to any student who wishes to approach them for informal discussion or advice. Dr Balige has also been assisting this group by giving them some basic training in how to operate such a service.
Website Additions
New pages recently added to the ISM Website include the November OP trip to Mandara at www.ismoshi.org/mandara8.htm
the October M2 trip to Pangani at www.ismoshi.org/pangani.htm
and photos of our students at Diwali at www.ismoshi.org/diwali08.htm
Security Services
On 31st October ISM changed our security provision in Arusha and in teachers' houses in Moshi to switch from school-employed security staff to using the services of Ultimate Security. We also now have an Ultimate Security guard at the main gate in Moshi although we continue to employ our own security staff on campus and around the boarding houses. The Moshi Campus also has both fixed and mobile emergency buttons to summon Ultimate Security immediately should there ever be a need. We believe that a professional security company will be able to provide a stronger measure of supervision and support than we can and hence security will be enhanced.
Parent Association AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the ISM Parent Association will be held at KIA Lodge on Wednesday, November 19th at 3:45pm. Any parent who has a child enrolled in either campus of ISM is warmly invited to attend. The meeting will review the year just concluded and elect new members to the PA Committee. Nominations for new members to the PA Committee must be received ny 12th November.
SAT Preparation for Diploma Students (D1)
Most D2 students have now finished taking the SAT Reasoning Tests and we are now looking to prepare our D1 students for SAT in May 2009. SAT tests are required for any student who may possibly apply to university or college in the United States and we strongly advise any student in this position to follow a careful preparation course. The school will provide weekly SAT classes for all D1 students from Thursday, 13th November. - all D1 students will be expected to attend unless their parents previously advise the Head of Secondary, Colin Beveridge on that they do not wish them to do so. [Compulsory SAT classes for D2 students have now ended although D2 students may join the D1 classes if they wish].
Dar es Salaam Presentation
On Friday, 21st November at 6pm, ISM will be making a presentation for prospective new families/students at the Movenpick Hotel in Dar es Salaam. It would also be a great pleasure to meet parents of current ISM students and I hope that you may be able to introduce some new families to us on that occasion. Currently our boarding houses only have a very few places available, but we are planning to expand our boarding facilities in the next few months and hope to welcome more new students at the start of the school year in August.
PYP Assessment Workshop
Parents are invited to attend a PYP assessment workshop on Wednesday 12th November from 5pm -6pm in Room 16.The focus will be on
  • How we assess and report to parents
  • What we assess and report to parents
This is an opportunity for parents to provide informal feedback and seek clarification on current practices.
Primary Assemblies
During assembly last week, P3/4 shared some of their writing with us, a poem, a song and a dance to show their multiplication skills. P3/4 researched countries which celebrated Hallowe’en and shared how they celebrate this event. This week P5/6 will be leading our assembly and we look forward to their presentation.
MYP Minute
Parents with children in M1 to M5 will find the latest MYP Minute attached to this newsletter. Others can download the MYP Minute from www.ismoshi.org/ParentNews081109_myp.pdf. This edition looks at the Areas of Interaction in the MYP and how they function.
Play On
Rehearsals of the ISM Players production of Play On are wrapping up. Anyone with used makeup (foundation, rouge, eyeshadow, lipstick, etc.) that they would like to donate to the ISM Players is asked to drop it off in the Main Office. Play On is a hilarious comedy which follows the mishaps of a community theatre troupe whose performance goes terribly wrong. It will be performed on December 4th and 5th on the NEW Karibu stage. Tickets will be available in the Main Office in a couple of weeks time.
Primary Reminders
All updates on events happening at school during the week will be posted on the PYP board on the pathway near the KG playground.

Hats:Students can leave their hats in designated areas in their classroom and take them home over the weekend to be washed. This is one way we can help them to have their hats at school.

Lost and Found: Please check with Anita at the main office for any lost property. If items are labelled it makes it a lot easier to return them to their owners.

Dance Classes: Amanda Kirk is offering Dance classes for adults every Thursday evening at TSh 5,000/- per session. Latin Dancing is 6pm to 7pm and Ballroom Dancing is 7pm to 8pm.

Christmas Fairs
Two Christmas Fairs will be taking place in the next few weeks - these events have been organised privately and are not directly connected with ISM:
  • 15/16 November. 10am to 5pm. Neriscia Blacquiere's house, Moshi. Details are posted in the breezeway in school.
  • 29/30 November. 10am to 5pm (4pm Sunday). Friedkin Recreation Centre, Arusha.
BUT ISM will be holding our own Christmas Fair during the sports weekend in early December. Details to follow.
