Moshi Campus News - 22nd November 2008
Dear Parents,

As yet another group of students challenge Kilimanjaro this weekend with a trip to Mawenzi Hut, the Outdoor Pursuits programme continues in full swing. Last weekend's trip using the Rongai route was highly successful - our only regret is that the students and teachers accompanying them missed Friday's excellent music concert. I would like to congratulate all who have contributed to both the OP and Music programmes this term.
Outdoor Pursuits - Uhuru Peak
For the last Outdoor Pursuits trip of this term, an intrepid band will attempt to reach Uhuru Peak on Kilimanjaro. They will be leaving school next Wednesday, 26th November and returning on Sunday. We wish them the very best of luck.

Parent Association Annual General Meeting
Thanks to all the many parents who joined us for the Parent Association AGM at KIA Lodge last Wednesday. The PA will be sending out meeting minutes to all parents next week.
Play On
We are all looking forward to this term's drama performance on Thursday, 4th and Friday, 5th December. Play On is a hilarious comedy which follows the mishaps of a community theatre troupe whose performance goes terribly wrong. It will be performed on the NEW Karibu Hall stage. Tickets are now available from reception in the Main Office. Hurry to buy yours before they all go!! See the poster on the school website.
December Public Holidays
In order to assist families with planning for the upcoming public holidays, ISM will definitely celebrate Idd el Hajj on Monday, 8th December and will celebrate Independence Day on Tuesday, 9th December. Classes will therefore take place as usual on Friday, 5th December and will then resume at 7:30am on Wednesday, 10th December. There will be a programme of activities for boarders over the long weekend, and those boarders who wish to travel home for the weekend may do so but should return by Tuesday afternoon, 9th December. These arrangements will not change even if later official government announcements indicate different days for national holidays.
Webpage Workshops
An ISM parent has kindly agreed to offer workshops for parents and others who wish to take a crash course in web page creation. The programme of workshops will be on five consecutive Saturday mornings in the Computer Centre on Moshi Campus as follows:
  • Nov 22, 10-12 am: Basic Priciples of ICT and Web Technology
  • Nov 29, 10-12 am: How to create a personal webpage
  • Dec 06, 10-12 am: Principles of Design I
  • Dec 13, 10-12 am: Principles of Design II
  • Dec 20, 10-12 am: Finishing Touches
Participation is free, and limited to individuals connected to ISM (parents, teachers, students, etc.).

For further details, please contact .
or see http://sites.google.com/site/kilimeru/Home/events.
Community Soccer Sevens
Moshi Campus will be hosting a small soccer sevens tournament between 1:30 and 4:30pm on Friday, 28th November. Teams from Kidachini School and the 'Light in Africa' Orphanage will join with both boys and girls teams from ISM. This tournament has been organised by ISM diploma students with the support of Mr Chris Dawson and aims to give some competitive soccer opportunities to local teams.
Mobile Phones
Most of our boarding students have their own mobile phones. They are allowed to use these during their free time in the afternoons, evenings and weekends, but are not allowed to use them during classes, evening study hall or after curfew/bed time. We are concerned that some of our younger students, particularly those in primary, carry their phones when they are playing or socialising in the afternoons and lose them or leave them lying around somewhere. We will therefore be strongly recommending to the younger students that they keep their phones in their rooms and only use them there - we hope that this will avoid the loss of some expensive phones.
Holiday Travel
Could the parents of all boarding students please contact Sunita Somaiya on or contact your child's boarding parent to ensure that we have the correct details and instructions for your child's travel arrangements on December 19th.
Primary Assemblies
P1/2 has been investigating different types of structures and materials used to construct a variety of things. During assembly last week they showed us why arches are the best shape to use when building bridges. We also enjoyed the opportunity to include some of our parents in our birthday line up this week. This week on Friday KG students will be leading the weekly assembly.
Payment of Fees by Wire Transfer
If you arrange to pay the school by a wire transfer from another bank, your bank will probably charge you fees to send the money and our bank typically charges us a fee to receive the money. Hence the amount we actually receive net may be less than you have paid. To ensure that we receive the correct amounts could you please add sufficient funds for bank charges to any wire transfers that you make? The amounts charged by our banks are as follows:
  • Standard Chartered Bank in Tanzania - 1% of the amount transferred (minimum charge $10)
  • CitiBank in the USA - US$10
  • Bank of Ireland in the UK - GBP 6
Payments made over the counter at any branch of Standard Chartered, or payments made through the UK BACS system to Bank of Ireland do not incur any charges.
Rummage Sale
Thanks to all who took part in the Rummage Sale on 1st November. A total of TSh 206,000/- was raised. This money will be used to support the group of students travelling to the Model United Nations in Nairobi next term. Another rummage sale is planned for May 2009.
Term Two Calendar
The calendar for Term Two on the Moshi Campus is available to download from the school website at www.ismoshi.org/Calendar.htm.
MYP Minute
This week's MYP Minute looks at the role of Field Study in the MYP Curriculum. It is attached here for parents of students in M1 to M5 and can also be downloaded from the school website.
ABRSM Music Theory Exams
If your child would like to take music theory examinations (set by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) in March, they must register with Mr Khari Lee before December 15th. Music practical exams will be held in May and registration will take place in February.
