Moshi Campus News - 28th November 2008
Dear Parents,

The final OP group of this term is currently attempting to assault Uhuru Peak on Kilimanjaro and is due back on campus on Sunday. Meanwhile we are making final preparations for our main drama production on Thursday and Friday this week.
Play On
We are all looking forward to this term's drama performance at 7:30pm on Thursday, 4th and Friday, 5th December. Play On is a hilarious comedy which follows the mishaps of a community theatre troupe whose performance goes terribly wrong. It will be performed on the NEW Karibu Hall stage. Tickets are now available from reception in the Main Office. Hurry to buy yours before they all go!! See the poster on the school website.
December Public Holidays
In order to assist families with planning for the upcoming public holidays, ISM will definitely celebrate Idd el Hajj on Monday, 8th December and will celebrate Independence Day on Tuesday, 9th December. Classes will therefore take place as usual on Friday, 5th December and will then resume at 7:30am on Wednesday, 10th December (see note below about primary classes). There will be a programme of trips and other activities for boarders over the long weekend, and those boarders who wish to travel home for the weekend may do so but should return by Tuesday afternoon, 9th December. These arrangements will not change even if later official government announcements indicate different days for national holidays.
Webpage Workshops
The crash course in web page creation continues this week. The programme of workshops is on consecutive Saturday mornings in the Computer Centre on Moshi Campus as follows:
  • Nov 29, 10-12 am: How to create a personal webpage
  • Dec 06, 10-12 am: Principles of Design I
  • Dec 13, 10-12 am: Principles of Design II
  • Dec 20, 10-12 am: Finishing Touches
Participation is free, and limited to individuals connected to ISM (parents, teachers, students, etc.).

Primary Reports & Parent Meetings
All primary students will be receiving their Term 1 reports on Friday, December 5th. Parent interviews are scheduled for Wednesday December 10th throughout the day. It is a non-teaching day for primary and students are expected to accompany their parents to attend the interviews. Teachers will have interview sign-up sheets outside their classrooms this week. Please note that there will therefore be no classes for primary students on Wednesday, December 10th. Classes will take place as normal for secondary students and a programme of activities will be in place for primary boarding students. Parents of primary boarding students may, on request to Keiron White at , receive a copy of their child's report by email after Dec 5th.

We have made some changes to our reporting and portfolio schedule which was presented to parents who attended the Assessment workshop on 12th November.

Kindergarten led assembly last week and were very excited about sharing their knowledge and skills with the rest of the school. Some of their reflections were:
"It's a bit scary talking when there are lots of people around" (Charlotte)
"I liked doing the puppet show because it was fun hiding behind the puppet theatre, but I forgot that they needed to see the puppets." (Madeleine)
"I wasn't scared talking any more because I knew what to say" (Sil & Emily)
"Assembly was fun because we got to sing and dance and Ms. Rosi got us ice lollies after outdoor play" (Lauren)
Next week Madame Laborde and Mama Mvungi will be organising the French and Kiswahili assembly.

Christmas Craft Fayre
On Saturday, 13th December, 10am to 2pm, we will be holding a Craft Fayre on campus. We are inviting local artisans and small traders to sell their various prodcts in the school. This will be an excellent opportunity for you to buy those much needed Christmas presents and to support Moshi small traders at the same time. There is a fee of TSh 10,000/- per table for anyone wishing to sell products. More details at www.ismoshi.org/xmasfayre.pdf.
Sports Weekend
We are starting to gear up for our major sports weekend on December 12th-14th. A large group of students will be staying on campus from IST in Dar es Salaam as well as from ISM Arusha Campus. In addition to a large number of different sports events, there will also be a student dance and other social activities. More details will follow in the next newsletter.
ABRSM Music Theory Exams
If your child would like to take music theory examinations (set by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) in March, they must register with Mr Khari Lee before December 15th. Music practical exams will be held in May and registration will take place in February.
Water Supply
Over the last few days, a number of the girls in Kijana and Kiongozi boarding houses have become ill with vomiting and diarrhoea. The illness has lasted a couple of days and most are now recovered. Very few students from other parts of the campus have been affected. We have attempted to identify the cause and, as part of that process, have had the school's water supply (particularly in the affected houses) tested for possible contamination - the results have indicated that the school water supply remains completely safe to drink. To be absolutely sure, we are currently also testing with a second laboratory. For the time being we are asking girls in Kijana and Kiongozi to only drink the boiled water which is being provided. Other possible explanations for the illness are also being followed up.
Scholarship Fund
Congratulations and a big thank you to Aline and Gaspard Knops, who raised TSh 245,000/= for the ISM Scholarship Programme selling their delicious Christmas bread at the Christmas fair which took place in Moshi last weekend.
Fees 2009/10
The Board has now determined the fees schedule for 2009/10. Details of this are available to view at www.ismoshi.org/Fees.htm.
SAT Tests
The next set of SAT tests to be held on the Moshi Campus are on Saturday, 6th December. Regular registration for these tests has now closed, although in some circumstances it is possible for a late registrant to enter as a standby candidate.
