International School Moshi Moshi Campus News - 11th January 2009
Dear Parents,
I hope that all families enjoyed the holiday period and wish all well for the New Year. We are looking forward to the boarders returning on Tuesday and to classes starting at 7:30am on Wednesday. It promises to be a busy term and, we hope, a highly successful one.
Start of Term Two
We would request that boarders return to school by 5pm on Tuesday, 13th January where possible. If your child needs transport from Kilimanjaro or Arusha airport, please send full details to immediately, if you have not already given us these details. Classes start at 7:30am on Wednesday, 14th January and there will be a full schedule of normal classes on this day. Secondary CAS and Sports activities will start on Thursday, 15th January. Primary afternoon clubs will start on Monday, 19th January.
New Arrivals
We are very pleased to welcome 14 new students to the school this term. All our boarding houses are now full, with the exception of one place remaining for a secondary girl. Also both our P5/6 and P3/4 classes are full. This is strongly encouraging for the future of the school and also provides a more varied and stimulating environment for our students.
Staff Changes
Emily Vient: We are sorry that Emily Vient has had to leave ISM unexpectedly for personal reasons. Ms Vient was the Moshi Campus ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher and she also taught M1 English and was the M1 class tutor. Although we only knew of her departure very recently, we are currently putting together plans to cover her classes temporarily and expect to be able to appoint a full-time replacement teacher for her position very soon.
Alissa ver Steeg: We are pleased to welcome Alissa ver Steeg to the school as a student teacher in the P5/P6 class. Alissa is in her final year of teacher training with Augustana College in the United States and will be working with David Holt and the P5/6 students.
Nicolas Garaud: We also welcome Nicolas Garaud who will be joining our French department to provide support to the secondary French classes. Nicolas is joining us from France where he shortly hopes to complete his qualification as a teacher. He will be working under the guidance of the secondary French teachers and will particularly help beginners in the various classes.
Marlaina Harper: The number in our P5/6 class has risen to 28 children and we have therefore asked Marlaina Harper to join us on a part-time basis to teach the class working with Mr David Holt. Marlaina will be joining us at the end of January and we are looking forward to her joining the staff.
Primary Clubs
The primary afternoon Clubs will start in week 2 from Monday, 19th January. We would like to thank parents who have offered an after school club this term namely: David Macha (rugby), Alina Knops (running), and Ellie Stanley (cricket, rounders and card making). We'd also like to thank Mrs. Koenig, Mrs. Pitot, Teresa Margheri( Art) and Amanda Kirk (Ballroom Dancing) for their contributions last term during afternoon clubs.

We would like to remind parents that fees for term two were due to have been received by 1st November 2008. If these have not yet been paid, please ensure that full payment is received by the school by Tuesday, 13th January as we may otherwise be unable to allow students to return for classes. For many parents, the payment for term three fees will be due by 1st February.
M4 Personal Projects
Our M5 students are now coming to the end of their year long work on their Personal Projects and the M4s have already had an initial introduction to these. On Thursday, 15th January, there will be a meeting for M4 parents at 7pm to introduce you to this and to explain the many requirements which your children will need to meet in the year ahead.
D2 Mock Exams / M5 Exams
During the week of January 19th to 23rd, our D2 students will be taking mock examinations designed to give them as realistic a practice as possible for the final diploma examinations. In the same week our M5 students on both campuses will also be taking their mid-year examinations. Students in M1 to M4 will be taking their own assessments during regular classes in January.
D1 Field Study
The D1 students will be travelling to Pangani on the Indian Ocean coast from 20th to 23rd January. They will be staying at the school's house there and will be undertaking field study related to their various IB Diploma science courses in Group 4.
