Dear Parents,
We were pleased to welcome all our returning students back last week and also to welcome our 17 new students. With 119 students now in boarding, we are at the highest level of boarding numbers that the school has had on this campus. It will be very difficult now for us to admit new applicants for boarding this school year, but we have already started accepting admissions for 2009/10. All our primary classes are also now full, with the exception of a couple of kindergarten places. Meanwhile our M5 and D2 students will be spending this weekend preparing for their formal examinations next week - we wish them well.
D1 Field Study in Pangani
All D1 students will be leaving to stay at the school house in Pangani from Tuesday, 20th January till Friday, 23rd January. During this stay they will be working with the science teachers on their "Group 4" projects - an assessed part of the IB Diploma science study.
ESL Teacher
We are very pleased to be welcoming Ms Keri Bean to the school as a new teacher from 23rd January. Ms Bean is coming to work with the ESL students in both primary and secondary, to teach English to the M1 class and to be the M1 class tutor. We are grateful for her very speedy arrival to take over Ms Vient's responsibilities and wish her well in the school.
M4 Personal Projects
Thanks to those parents who were able to attend the M4 parents' meeting on Thursday to explain the Personal Project. Parents of students in M1 to M4 will find the MYP Minute attached to this email which summarises the Personal Project for those who were unable to attend. This document is also available to download from www.ismoshi.org/ParentNews090116_myp.pdf.
Parents may also be interested to read the whole Personal Project Guide for our students which is available on the school website at www.ismoshi.org/myp_ppguide.pdf.
M4 Field Study
The M4 students from both campuses will be undertaking field study at Kolo on February 3rd - February 6th. During this visit they will study the rock paintings at Kolo and also undertake other academic studies. M4 parents will receive further details soon.
Kivuli Boarding House
The Board has now awarded a construction contract for the extension of Kivuli boarding house. At present the house has four diploma boys - the planned extension will add eight self-contained rooms housing sixteen students. Work should start within the next week and is expected to be completed in May 2009 providing places for new students joining the school in August.
Parking in School
When you are visiting school, please park in the designated school car park and do not drive your car through the barrier into the main part of the campus. I would like to emphasise that the main car park should be used by any parents visiting school including parents of boarders, or others who may be using the swimming pool or tennis courts. In special circumstances, such as when carrying a lot of luggage on the first day or last day of term, we will instruct askaris to allow other cars to enter.
Primary Afternoon Clubs
All primary clubs will start this week on Monday, 19th January. Students are being encouraged to come prepared in proper attire for their clubs particularly for the sports clubs.
If your child is in any of the swimming clubs please ensure that they attend next week because we would like to assess all swimmers and regroup them if necessary. If you have any concerns please see Mr. Holt.
Contacting Teachers
If you need clarification about any school issues could you please contact myself or the main office or make an appointment to see teachers. Please do not contact class teachers directly on their personal phones as this disrupts classes, meetings and other activities. Teachers can also be contacted using a school email address of firstname initial @ ismoshi.net, as in or .
Primary School Reminders
- All primary students are encouraged to wear hats outside and to have water bottles in the classrooms.
- Please check the school website for upcoming events and the newsletter for weekly updates.
- Please submit changes to your contact information as soon as possible to assist us in case of sickness or emergencies at school concerning your child. Please send all contact information to Keiron White at .
ISA Tests
In the first week of February we will be administering ISA [International Schools Assessment] tests to students in the P5, M1 and M3 classes on both campuses. These standardised tests are intended to help us measure our students and our teaching programmes against those of other international schools. Students are not expected to prepare for the tests in any way and we intend to make the process as simple as possible for them. If you would like to read more about the tests that we took in 2008, please go to www.ismoshi.org/isaacer.htm.
