International School Moshi Moshi Campus News - 22nd March 2009 |
|
Dear Parents, Last week proved to be another busy one with our primary swimming gala on Thursday, sports competitions between campuses in Arusha on Tuesday (in the interests of inter-campus relations I am not allowed to publish the scores!), our PYP student-parent conferences on Wednesday, interviews for new scholarship students on Saturday, and the Outdoor Pursuits trip to Mandara on Saturday/Sunday. We are now entering the last five days of this term and I think all are looking forward to a well-deserved rest (except the D2 students, of course). End of Term Arrangements
Classes will finish on Friday 27th March. Secondary students will be free to leave at 10:15am, and their teachers will be meeting with parents until noon (see below). Primary students will finish classes on that day at 12 noon. Please do not take your child out of school before the end of term, unless it is absolutely necessary, as it makes class teaching very difficult if many students are absent. Parents of boarding students are asked to contact Sunita Somaiya on with details of their child's travel arrangements if these have not already been finalised.Secondary Reports
This term, all secondary students (except D2s) will be receiving interim reports. These will give a brief comment on their performance in each subject together with an estimated achievement grade and an effort grade. The D2 students will receive their final set of reports before the diploma examinations and will contain more detail on their performance. All secondary reports will be issued on Wednesday, 25th March. If your child is in boarding, they will bring their report home at the end of term, but you may also request a digital copy of the report by emailing Keiron White on on or after 25th March. Secondary Parent Meetings
All secondary teachers will be available in Karibu Hall from 10:30am to 12 noon on Friday, 27th March. We will be very happy to meet with parents and discuss any issues concerning your child's progress in school. We hope to see many parents on that day. If you are unable to attend on that day and would alternatively like to meet with teachers next term, please contact Colin Beveridge, the Head of Secondary on to arrange a suitable date and appointments.Library Books
Please ensure that library books are returned by Wednesday, 25th March. New books can then be borrowed for the school holiday.Primary Assembly and Farewells
Last week, Kindergarten students shared what they had learned about the different ways that stories could be told which included a play, a puppet show, song and a dance. We also said farewell to Jonathan Macha, Peter, Juliette and Emily Goodwin who are returning to the UK with their families, Julian and David Behrendt who are returning to Germany with their parents, and Samarth Dinavahi who will be moving to Canada. The secondary school is also sorry to be saying goodbye to Jessica and Sam Macha.Primary Football
We would like to congratulate our football coach, Kate Robertson, and the P3/4 & P5/6 students who represented the school in a football match against our neighbours across the road - Kilimanjaro Educational Academy. Despite losing both matches our students enjoyed having the opportunity to play a match against another team and apply their skills. The Sound of Music
There has been a change to the presentation of the Sound of Music After School Club production. It will now be held on Monday 23rd March at the Social Centre. Ray is inviting parents and friends to come and join them in a sing-along and an opportunity to watch the movie at 2.20pm..Primary afternoon clubs
Next term Ray Sasman will be coordinating the Primary Afternoon Clubs. If you are able to offer a club for next term could you please contact Ray at school or leave a message with the office. A note was sent with primary students last week. If you haven't signed up and would be happy to offer an afternoon club for the primary students, please email Ray Sasman on .Primary School
On behalf of the Primary team we would like to thank all our parents and friends who have supported our programmes in any way this term, by helping out in the classroom as parent help, providing after school activities, organising and assisting with whole school events, assemblies, attending units of inquiry class presentations etc. We hope you all have a great Easter Break.Primary Boarding
As parents of children in primary boarding will know, Teresa Margheri suffered an injury last week and will be away from work for a while. For the last week of this term, Catherine Shayo will be working with the current assistant boarding parent, Sia Mrema and will be taking care of the children.TOEFL tests
The next TOEFL tests to be held in Moshi will be on Saturday, 9th May. However we strongly advise all candidates to register before the end of this term. Students presently in D1 who are not British, US, Canadian or other English-speaking country nationality and who plan to study in the USA and some other countries will usually be asked to take a TOEFL test of English Language. A TOEFL score is an important part of a university application package for many students. D1 students who are not sure whether or not to take the test should consult Mrs Beveridge as soon as possible. Registrations must be done online and details are given on the school website at www.ismoshi.org/SAT.htm. The cost is US$ 150 and payment must be made by credit card. Students who do not have access to a credit card can get assistance to register from school - if this is needed parents are requested to let us know by email on before Wednesday, that they are willing to cover the $150 charge plus 5% handling fees.SAT tests
D1 students who are planning to join university or college in the USA are also strongly advised to take SAT tests. We have been providing weekly classes in preparation for these since November. Registration for SAT tests is also online and students who wish to take the next set of tests in Moshi on 6th June should register online by the end of April. Details are given on the school website at www.ismoshi.org/SAT.htm. The same process will apply as in TOEFL (above) for those who need assistance with payment by credit card.Outdoor Pursuits
The following OP trips are planned for next term:
School Fees
For most parents, school fees for the third term were due to have been received by us on 1st February 2009. Unfortunately many fees are now overdue and this is causing the school some cash flow difficulties. Parents in this position have been informed and late fees have been surcharged. We will also be witholding documentation (such as reports) if fees are overdue, and students whose fees are not paid will not be able to return at the beginning of term three.Kilimanjaro Marathon
Many ISM families and students took part in the Kilimanjaro Marathon on 1st March and helped to raise funds for the ISM Scholarship Programme. DSTV has scheduled a 30-minute programme about the race to air as follows: Wednesday 1 April (SS5 19:30), Thurs 2 Apr (SS2 12:30), Fri 3 Apr (SS7 13:30), Sat 4 Apr (SS5 17:00), Sun 5 Apr (SS7 13:00), Mon 6 Apr (SS5 20:30).World Maths Day
Congratulations to all our students who participated in World Maths Day on 4th March. Altogether ISM students answered 199 040 questions correctly and they took 9830 minutes to do so on that day. Special congratulations to the top students in terms of questions answered (Stefan Kammleiter, Kathleen Wang, Milou Nijenhuis), top scorers (Michael Kammleiter, Martin Kammleiter, Stefan Kammleiter), and most improved students over the day (Abella Mutiganzi, Mwoleka Bishota, Melvin Haller).Term Three 2008/09
Boarding students should return to school for the start of term three on Tuesday, 14th April. Classes will begin at 7:30am on Wednesday, 15th April. If any help is needed with travel arrangements or with transport from the airport, please contact Sunita Somaiya on .Dar es Salaam Presentation
We are planning a visit to Dar es Salaam on Friday and Saturday, 24th/25th April to meet with parents and to present the school to new prospective families. If you know of any families in Dar who may be looking for a new school for their children, please let them know about this event. Full details and arrangements will be published soon once all is confirmed.Arrangements for D2 students
D2 students are fast approaching their final diploma examinations and will need to use much of the coming holiday to work and prepare. On their return they will have only a few days of classes up to and including Friday, 24th April. These last few formal lessons with teachers are very important as they will be used for the final needs of exam preparation. There will be no formal classes for D2 students from Monday, 27th April to Thursday, 30th April. During this time they may choose to revise privately or may choose to meet with their teachers who will be available for advice. D2 boarding students who wish to travel home for the study period from 25th April to 3rd May may do so - parents are requested to advise the boarding parent in advance; others may prefer to remain in school and study here with teacher support.D2 Visual Arts students must have their exhibition fully ready for the opening (by invitation only) on Thursday, 16th April. The exhbition will also be open for general viewing on April 20th - 23rd. For more details see www.ismoshi.org/dipart. D2 written exams begin on Monday, 4th May and finish on Thursday, 21st May. The full exams schedule is shown at www.ismoshi.org/dip_exams.htm. There will be a dinner for D2 students and their parents in Moshi on Friday, 22nd May. The Graduation Ceremony for the D2 students will take place on Saturday, 23rd May after which D2 students will have fully completed their schooling and will leave the school. More details on both these events will be published next term. New Teachers for 2009/10
