Moshi Campus Newsletter - 10th May 2009
Dear Parents,

Our final Outdoor Pursuits trip of this school year is presently under way as students head for Socialist Peak on Mt Meru. Last week was the first week of the written IB diploma exams which will continue until 21st May. Also our P3/P4 students spent Thursday and Friday last week in Marangu as part of their unit of inquiry into Water.
PYP Exhibition
The big event of this coming week is our PYP Exhibition. This is the culminating project for our P6 students - a trans-disciplinary enquiry conducted in the spirit of personal and shared responsibility. It is an opportunity for the P6 students to synthesise the essential elements of the PYP and share them with the school community. All are welcome on
Wednesday, 13th May at 6:30pm in Karibu Hall

P6 Students' Request

Do you have any clothes to donate?

Do you want to get some of your your old clothes out of the house?
If you do, come with them on Exhibition night!
We will donate them to the orphanage "Light in Africa".
It can be any size: big to small, adults to kids!

Sports Weekend in Dar es Salaam
Our primary swimming and soccer teams are heading to Dar next weekend (15th-18th May) to compete against a number of schools. We wish them well for the trip. If you have paid the cost of the trip directly to the accounts office, could you please give a copy of your receipt to Mr Holt.

Because of this trip, there will be no primary assembly this week.
Collecting Primary Children from School
This week we have had a few children still at school well after the end of the school day. We would like to request that parents communicate any changes or delays in pick up times for their child, particularly if they are not attending after-school clubs.

If your child is unable to attend after school clubs please inform the class teacher or club leader.
D1 End-of-Year Exams
The D1 students will be writing internal end-of-year examinsations in most subjects during the week of 18th-22nd May. As a result they will not have regular classes that week but will have an alternative examination schedule.
MYP End of Year Assessments
The M1 to M5 students will be undertaking end of year assessments in the week of 25th to 29th May. Students have been given revision guides by subject teachers for their end of year assessments. Assessments are designed to fit the MYP assessment criteria, and will vary in type as subjects require: some will be tests, others will be various types of projects. The scope and difficulty of the assessments will vary by class increasing as students get older. All students are being given an overall guide to plan for the assessments and how to study. I invite all parents to read through the revision guide and help your children prepare for these assessments. The purpose of assessment week is to help the students become more knowledgeable and accomplished in their subjects, and to prepare them for the types of examinations they will receive in the Diploma programme.
M5 Ten Minute Theatre
Our M5 students are presenting Ten Minute Theatre by David S Raine in Karibu Hall at 8pm on Monday, 18th May. All are welcome - entrance free.
ABRSM Practical Exams
The date for these exams is now confirmed as Friday, 22nd May in Moshi. Students have already registered for these and it is no longer possible to accept new registrations. Registered students can find out the time of their examination from Mr Lee.
ABRSM Theory Exams
The next set of music theory examinations will be held in Moshi on 30th September. Students who wish to register must see Mr Lee before the end of this term on 17th June.
SAT tests
These tests will take place in Moshi on Saturday, 6th June. It is now too late to pre-register for the tests, but late entries are possible if sufficient test papers are available. Students who failed to register but who still wish to take the test should see Mrs Beveridge. An extra fee is payable for stand-by registrations. SAT tests will also be held in Moshi on Saturday, 10th October 2009, Saturday, 7th November 2009, and Saturday, 1st May 2010.
Leaving Students
The deadline for advising us if your child will not be continuing in ISM next term has now passed. If your situation has unexpectedly changed and your child will be leaving, please let me know as soon as possible on . The school can charge half a term's fees in lieu if sufficient notice of departure is not given.
Rummage Sale
We will be holding a Rummage Sale in Karibu Hall on Saturday, 30th May. This is an opportunity to sell your old items or buy from others. All proceeds from the Rummage Sale will be donated to ISM community service projects. Further details are available at www.ismoshi.org/rummage.pdf.
Calculators for D1 students - 2009/10
All students in D1 are required to have a graphical display calculator for use in classes and examinations. Only certain models of calculators are approved by the IB for use in exams and it can also take a while to learn how to use a particular model effectively. From August 2009, we will be teaching students effective use of graphic calculators using the TI-Nspire model (without CAS functions). We would therefore very strongly recommend that students obtain this model as we may not be able to help students with different models. The school will also have a stock of TI-Nspire calculators for sale to D1 students at cost price (approximately $131 depending on exchange rates) in August. Further details on this calculator can be found at the TI website. Note that D2 students will continue to be taught using the older TI-84 model.
