International School Moshi Moshi Campus Primary News - 18th August 2009
Dear Parents,
We have had a great start to the year with students settling in quickly to their class routines, developing essential agreements and finding out what is expected of them to be independent and confident learners. Over these first two weeks teachers will be conducting baseline assessment tests to identify student's numeracy and literacy skills .
Thank you to all parents who turned up for the Parent Information evening on Wednesday. Teachers discussed an overview of the class programmes, routines and expectations. Parents had an opportunity to raise some of their concerns and discuss ways which they could work with the class teachers to support their children's learning.
At the end of the newsletter you will find the Assembly schedule for this quarter and a feedback sheet about your child for the teachers.
Afternoon Clubs
All students who returned their forms should have brought home their forms with clubs that they will be attending. We have tried to accommodate all choices. We did ask students to number their preferences so that if clubs were full we would consider their next preference. Students will have an opportunity to attend a variety of clubs this week to make a final choice about which clubs they would be in for the rest of the quarter.
Please note Athletics (P3-6) and Swimming (P3/4) times on Wednesday have been swapped.
Swimming (P3/4): 1.35pm - 2.20pm
Athletics (P3-6): 2.35pm - 3.20pm
Reminders - Athletics / Football/Touch Rugby Clubs:
All students in these clubs will need to have a water bottle, wear sunscreen, proper "runners" and sports attire. Swimming: Please ensure that your child is punctual and has changed into their swimmers/togs when they arrive at the pool; at the end of the sessions parents are responsible for supervising their children.
The updated list of students' names in the different clubs has been emailed to parents. A list will also be posted along the breeze way.

P3/4 Preview
Ms. Kelli will be sending a weekly preview of the week ahead to update parents on what students will be learning during the week. Here is the preview for Week 2
For the week of: August 17th-21st
Here's what's happening this week:
U.O.I. - We'll begin the Unit of Inquiry this week. The central idea: Understanding the past, influences what is preserved in the future. Lines of inquiry:
The information artifacts offer us about the past
Items, ideas and practices from the past currently used in present-day Tanzania
How understanding the past can influence the future.
This week, we'll have a class discussion about important aspects of the past (schooling, religion, architecture, the arts, medicine, etc.) which are present in modern-day society. Students will also begin browsing books about ancient civilizations and will share their learning with the class.
Writing - Students will learn the Writing Process this week (Pre Writing-Drafting-Conference-Revision-Editing-Publishing). I will also be assessing students this week, in order to guide what kinds of learning activities will take place around writing this year.
Students will learn how the spelling program works in P.3/4 and will receive spelling journals to use throughout the year.
Reading - Students will begin learning reading strategies they can use while reading independently. Strategies students will learn: Text-to-Self, Text-to-Text, and Text-to-World Connections, Questions, Visualizing, Favorite and Prediction. I will also be assessing students this week, in order to guide what kinds of learning activities will take place around reading this year.
Math - I will be assessing students this week, in order to guide what kinds of learning activities will take place around math this year. Each morning, students will be working in small groups to create and solve math problems which result in a given answer (for example, 'What are all the ways you can arrive at the number 5?')
NOTES:
P.E. Clothing - because P.E. is usually integrated into the U.O.I. curriculum, P.E. will be learned at all different times throughout the unit. Therefore, I ask that you send along P.E. clothing now with your children and we will store it at school when it's needed for P.E.
Please remember to initial your child's homework books each evening so that I know you read the reminders from me each evening. It's their job to bring you the books, along with a pen for you to sign.
The first homework packets are due on Monday. Homework is a chance for students to work independently at home and the homework should reflect what they are capable of doing. However, if they are 'stumped' and need some help getting started, please feel free to assist them.
If you've got any resources to help support the Unit of Inquiry, please let me know. They would be most welcome.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK!

Observations and Reflections
Please find attached a parental observations form. We are interested in how you see your child at home. Please take a minute to consider his/her social/academic development, interests, attitudes, strengths and special needs. When you write please use brief comments or phrases.
Please send this back to school by the 21st of August. This will be the basis of your first interview with your child's class teacher.
This newsletter has been sent to you from International School Moshi. Please advise me if your email address changes or if you would like me to add another email address to this mailing list.
