International School Moshi
Moshi Campus News - 27th August 2009

Dear Parents,

Now three weeks into the school year and most students are well engaged with school. This weekend we have an excellent opportunity for families to meet each other and to meet the teachers in a social context. I very much hope to meet many parents and families at the Parent Association Picnic on Saturday.
PA Picnic - Saturday 29th August
All ISM families and teachers are invited to the PA Picnic at TPC (a few km south of Moshi) on Saturday, 29th August from 12 noon to 5pm. Please bring some food and drinks to share with others. There will be a barbecue and charcoal available. Details and a map of the TPC site are attached.

For the last few years the PA picnic at TPC has been a great chance for the ISM community to meet together and I hope that very many people will be able to attend. We look forward to seeing you there.
M1 Campcraft
This weekend many of the M1 students from both campuses will be undertaking a camp craft trip. This is an opportunity for them to learn some of the skills of hill walking and camping and is designed as an introduction to the full Outdoor Pursuits programme.
PYP Curriculum Corner
Please find The PYP Curriculum Corner attached to this newsletter. Included in this separate section are updates on curriculum and the weekly preview for P1/2-P5/6. the purpose of this flyer is to
  • keep parents informed of developments in the Primary Years Programme
  • develop parent awareness and understanding of essential elements of the PYP knowledge, attitudes, skills, concepts (big ideas), action
  • inform parents of learning strategies and articles that support/reflect student learning

    Ramadan and Idd el Fittr
The Islamic holy month of Ramadan began last weekend. During this month many Muslim students in the school are fasting. To help the boarding students with this, the school provides them with an early breakfast in their boarding house and they also take a later supper after they have broken their fast. Special rooms can also be made available as prayer rooms on request.

At the end of Ramadan there is a national holiday of two days - Idd el Fittr - which is declared once the new moon has been sighted. So that ISM families can plan their time well, the school will recognise Monday, 21st September and Tuesday, 22nd September as the Idd holiday and we will hold no classes on those days. We will not change these plans if the government announces different dates for the Idd holiday. There will be classes as normal on Wednesday, 23rd September.

Boarders are welcome to travel home for the long Idd weekend if they wish, but should return to school by 6pm on Tuesday, 22nd September. For those boarders who are unable to travel home, we are planning a special boarding trip to Pangani for the weekend.
    D1 - Graphic Calcualtors
All students in the D1 class are required to obtain graphic display calculators for use in their IB programme. We recommend that students purchase the handheld TI-nspire calculator (NOT the CAS model) and we will be teaching our classes how to use this particular model effectively. Although the IBO allows a range of other models, we may not be able necessarily to assist students with their use of other models. The school has some TI-nspire calculators in stock and these are available at US$140 each. If parents are not able to pay for these directly, please let me know on keironw@ismoshi.net that it is OK for us to bill you and that payment will be made later.
    Primary Polo Shirts
All primary children are expected to wear an ISM polo shirt for classes. Polo shirts are available from the receptionist, Anita, in the main office at a cost of either TSh 18,000/- per shirt.or TSh 14,000/- per shirt (depending on which supplier's shirts are chosen). We will be arranging for primary students who do not wear their ISM polo shirts for classes to go home and change.
    Contact Details
It is very important that all our parent contact details are kept up to date. Shortly we will be sending a form with all day students to ask parents to complete all your contact details. Alternatively you can send your contact details to us online at www.ismoshi.org/contactdetails.htm. This is a quick and easy way to send the information - please help us to ensure our records are up to date.
    P5/6 Trip
On Thursday 27th August, P5/6 will be traveling to Majengo Magadini, a Masai Village just past TPC. As part of our unit of inquiry on Law and Order, we want to interview the village chief so that we can find out:
  • how Tribal Law works,
  • the chain of command,
  • who makes the laws,
  • what are the punishments,
  • who carries out the punishments etc.

    P3/4 Trip
On Wednesday, 2nd September, P3/P4 will also be travelling to Majengo Megadini to observe village practices and to learn about practices from the past which have stayed the same or changed over time.
    Primary After-School Clubs
All students should have finalised their choices of clubs this week and informed Ms. Rosi of any changes. All students have to attend the clubs they have signed up for, for the rest of the quarter. Please check the updated list in school or contact Ms Rosi if you have any questions.

    Reminders
Athletics / Football/Touch Rugby Clubs: All students in these clubs will need to have a water bottle, wear sunscreen, proper "runners" and sports attire
Swimming: Please ensure that your child is punctual and has changed into their swimmers/togs when they arrive at the pool, likewise at the end of the sessions parents are responsible for supervising their children.
    Primary Assembly
Ms. Kelli and the P3/4 students will be leading our Share Time assembly this week. Assembly starts at 7.40am in Karibu Hall on Friday.
    Primary Observations and Reflections
If you were unable to print out a copy of the primary Parent Observation and Reflection form last week, you can pick up a hard copy from Ms. Rosi to be completed and returned to the class teacher.
    Primary Snacks and Water Bottles
Snacks: Students are being encouraged to bring healthy snacks to school. Please try to include a fruit in your child's lunch pack.

Water bottles: We are encouraging students to have a water bottle in class with water (not juice) in it for them to drink from regularly in between lessons or often as they need to.
    Boarders' Circus Trip
The highlight of last weekend was a trip to the Circus Mama Africa in town which was immensly enjoyed by our boarders. Two of our boarders were selected from the audience during the show, and I must add they did the school proud with their confidence "on stage". If you have not yet seen Circus Mama Africa, we strongly recommend a visit - it is excellent fun for all the family - the circus is in toen until 8th September.

Another feature of last weekend for the boarders was "Henna Painting". Girls gathered together and patterned their hands and feet with intricate designs.
Outdoor Pursuits - Pare Mountains Trip
On September 12-13, the first main Outdoor Pursuits trip of the school year will take place in the Pare Mountains south of Moshi. The trip is aimed at older secondary students who are new to the school or the OP programme and who want to get involved in OP. It will be a 2 day trip walking up the Pare Mountains and camping on a ridge at the top before descending down the other side the next day. This is a steep level one trip not suitable for M1s.
    Community Service - Hard Labour
On the weekend of September 5th/6th, a group of mostly D2 students will be travelling to Kidachini Primary School as part of their Hard Labour project. They will be painting the primary school buildings throughout the weekend.
