Moshi Campus News - 30th August 2009

Dear Parents,

It was a pleasure to meet those of you who were able to come to the PA picnic at TPC on Saturday. Whilst we were there, our M1 students enoyed their camp craft weekend in Marangu with their Arusha Campus counterparts. This week the P3/4 class has a day trip to Majengo Megadini and many of the D2 students will be undertaking Community Service at Kidachini on the coming weekend.
Early Childhood Information Session
Development Continuum and Milestones
When: Monday 31st August, 2009
  • Morning session: 11.30am
  • Afternoon session: 5.00pm
    Where: Room 3 (Kindergarten classroom)

"Do you know what your child should be able to do at their age?"
"Are you aware of behaviour, attitudes, sensory or motor skills being portrayed by your child that should be of concern to you?"
"Do you know how you can support your child’s learning from home?"

An information session has been organised for parents of students in the Early Childhood class on Monday 31st August to answer some of the questions above. Ms. Amelia will be conducting two separate sessions at the times mentioned above.
The focus of the sessions is on understanding The Early Childhood Development Continuum and Milestones
All parents are invited to attend either the morning session at 11.30am or the afternoon session at 5pm. The above arrangement is to enable working parents to also attend.

We look forward to your attendance.
    Ms. Amelia
    PYP Curriculum Corner
Please find The PYP Curriculum Corner attached to this newsletter. Included in this separate section are updates on curriculum and the weekly preview for P1/2-P5/6. the purpose of this flyer is to
  • keep parents informed of developments in the Primary Years Programme
  • develop parent awareness and understanding of essential elements of the PYP knowledge, attitudes, skills, concepts (big ideas), action
  • inform parents of learning strategies and articles that support/reflect student learning

Students in P3/4 have been getting first hand experience of traditional art and dance in Tanzania through their investigations in their current unit of inquiry. Details of their experiences can be found in the weekly preview. Likewise for P1/2 and P5/6.
    Contact Details
It is very important that all our parent contact details are kept up to date. Shortly we will be sending a form with all day students to ask parents to complete all your contact details. Alternatively you can send your contact details to us online at www.ismoshi.org/contactdetails.htm. This is a quick and easy way to send the information - please help us to ensure our records are up to date.
    P3/4 Trip
On Wednesday, 2nd September, P3/P4 will be travelling to Majengo Megadini to observe village practices and to learn about practices from the past which have stayed the same or changed over time.
Outdoor Pursuits - Pare Mountains Trip
On September 12-13, the first main Outdoor Pursuits trip of the school year will take place in the Pare Mountains south of Moshi. The trip is aimed at older secondary students who are new to the school or the OP programme and who want to get involved in OP. It will be a 2 day trip walking up the Pare Mountains and camping on a ridge at the top before descending down the other side the next day. This is a steep level one trip not suitable for M1s.
    Community Service - Hard Labour
On the weekend of September 5th/6th, a group of mostly D2 students will be travelling to Kidachini Primary School as part of their Hard Labour project. They will be painting the primary school buildings throughout the weekend.

    SAT Registration
Diploma students applying to universities and colleges in the United States are strongly advised to take SAT Reasoning tests which are available in Moshi on three dates per year. At this stage, we are recommending that any D2 students who are applying to the US and either have not yet taken the tests or who wish to improve their scores, should apply for the tests which will take place on Saturday, 10th October. Registration for these tests must be made online before 9th September and payment should be made using a credit card. The standard fee for the reasoning tests is US$71. Families/students who do not have access to a credit card and who wish the school to register on their behalf must request this from myself, Keiron White, BEFORE FRIDAY 4th SEPTEMBER. Parents will be billed the SAT fee plus a 5% credit card handling fee.

The next set of SAT tests in Moshi is on 7th November 2009 and registration for these closes on 1st October. D1 students will be advised to take the SAT in May 2010 and not at this stage.
    Development Office
ISM's Development Office is responsible for marketing and fundraising in the school, for alumni relations and for management of the school's Visiting Schools Programme. It is with regret that we have had to say goodbye to Chinta Beez who has been our Development Officer for the last few months - Chinta has had to leave due to circumstances beyond her control - and I would like to thank Chinta on behalf of the school for all that she has contributed in her role. We will shortly be determining our needs for the Development Office in the light of current requirements.
