The 2010/11 school calendar is now available to download from www.ismoshi.org/Calendar.htm.Individual music lessons
Some parents will have received invoices via email last week for your child's individual music lessons. These are charged at TSh 10,000/- per half hour (with a reduction to TSh 9,000/- per half hour for a second set of lessons). The amount charged is used to reimburse the teacher's costs and to contribute towards the school's musical instrument fund. We are grateful for the music teachers from the community who help to support this programme. Invoices are sent near the beginning of each semester - any additional or fewer lessons taken are adjusted on the fees account with debits or credits after the end of the semester.D1/D2: Applying to University
A number of events are coming up in the near future designed to help students choose universities for their applications and future studies:
D2: Margaret Sanders Scholarship
Every year an award of $5000 is made to a graduating student from one of the AISA (Association of International Schools in Africa) schools to contribute towards their university/college costs. Students presently in D2 in Moshi are eligible to apply for this award. Further details are available from the AISA web site at www.aisa.or.ke/sanders.html. Application packages must be submitted to Mrs Beveridge in school by Wednesday, 23rd September at the latest; they must include all details as described on the AISA website. The school will select the best application to forward to AISA. D2 students interested in applying for this award will need to do so very quickly.D2: UCAS Applications
Students in D2 planning to apply to UK universities should begin preparing their online UCAS applications soon. They may see Mrs Beveridge for assistance with this process.D2: SAT and TOEFL tests
The next set of SAT tests in Moshi is on 10th October - registration for these tests has already closed. Boarding students who have already registered for these tests may remain in school on the night of 9th October before travelling home after the tests. There will also be SAT tests in Moshi held on 7th November. Registration for these tests will close on 1st October, but students who need help with credit card payments must register before 28th September. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) tests will be held in Moshi on 14th November 2009. Registration for these tests will close on 12th October, but students who need help with credit card payments must regsiter before 7th October. The fee is $160 (plus a 5% credit card charge if charged through ISM). Further information on SAT and TOEFL tests in Moshi is available from www.ismoshi.org/SAT.htm. Moshi Campus Network and Internet Access
Students on Moshi Campus may access the school network (inclduing file server) using school computers in the Library or IT Centre at any time when these facilities are open. The may also access the Internet free of charge in the afternoons after classes. Internet access in the mornings or during study hall in the evenings is limited to work-related activities. The library is open from 7:30am to 5pm on Mondays to Fridays. The IT Centre is open from 7:30am to 9:15pm on Mondays to Thursdays, 7:30am to 5pm on Fridays, 2pm-6pm on Saturdays, and 2pm-9:15pm on Sundays.Students may also access the school network on their personal computers at all times using the new wireless access points in the classroom area, using wired access points in the classrooms, or using either wireless or wired connections in each bedroom in the boarding houses (except Kimbilio/Kiota). Students may not access the Internet on personal computers unless their parents have first confirmed that this is acceptable - there is a charge of $40 per calendar month for Internet access for each private computer registered. Internet access is provided to all personal computers free of charge on Fridays from 5pm to 10pm to allow boarders to update anti-virus software. It is a condition of connecting any personal computer to the school network that up to date anti-virus software is installed. Limitations on Internet access are due to the very high demands on limited bandwidth and also the school's inability to monitor any Internet usage on personal computers. M5 Leadership Symposium
M5 students from both campuses met at Kishari House in Moshi for the annual Leadership Symposium last week in which students explored the theme of leadership through workshops presented by some 14 teachers and invited speakers. Thus, theoretical and practical perspectives were shared and discussed, while students also had multiple opportunities to put leadership into action through team challenges and activities. Some of the central themes that emerged included types of leadership and leaders, establishing trust, what effective leaders do and what they don't, roles people tend to play in a team, qualities of leaders, leadership in moving from MYP to DP, and leading community and service initatives. Through commentaries, dialogue and action, the M5 students ensured that these themes were examined in multi-faceted and deep levels. For both old and young, it was a deeply enriching three days! One theme that was discussed at the Leadership Symposium was the link between leadership, creativity and living in different countries. Dr. Paul Courtright, director of Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology, helped us see the mistake of worrying ourselves and others about what can’t be remedied in a plenary session entitled Leadership: 11 Mistakes to Avoid. In addition, he commented on recent research outlined in The Economist, that people who have lived in various countries tend to be better at adapting to daily inconveniences such as electrical cuts, sudden weather changes and emergencies. Internationally-minded people tend to be more creative with finding solutions to such inconveniences and with coping with them. US Embassy Consular Services
