International School Moshi Moshi Campus News - 22nd October 2009
Dear Parents,
International School Moshi was founded in October 1969 and we are proud to be celebrating our 40th Anniversary this weekend. We have a number of activities planned and hope that you will be able to join us for some of these. If you would like to learn more about the early history of ISM, please see the web page From Grass Roots to Graduation at www.ismoshi.org/Algrass.htm.
40th Anniversary Assembly
On Friday morning at 7:45am, we will have a full Moshi Campus assembly in Karibu Hall to mark the school's 40th Anniversary. Parents and alumni are very welcome to join us and we would particularly welcome those parents of current students who are themselves ISM alumni.

ISM 40th Anniversary - Sports Weekend
On Saturday and Sunday secondary students from the Arusha Campus will be joining us for an inter-house sports weekend with a huge range of activities. Students will compete in their houses - Kibo (Blue), Mawenzi (Green) and Meru (Yellow) and are expected to wear the appropriate colour T-shirt for the sports events. 40th Anniversary T-shirts in all three colours are available from reception at ONLY TSh 6000/- each - a bargain! The planned schedule of events is attached to this email and is also available online at www.ismoshi.org/sportsweekend.pdf.
Day students who wish to eat meals in the dining hall this weekend may purchase meal tickets in the usual way from reception on Friday.
On Saturday evening from 7pm to 10:30pm there will be a dance for all secondary students in the dining hall.
We are also hoping that staff, parents and alumni will join in and compete against the students at some events on Sunday morning. The sports weekend will finish after lunch on Sunday when Arusha Campus students return home.
Dinner Dance
As previously advised, we are sorry to have had to cancel the planned Dinner Dance in Arusha on Friday. The sale of tickets for this had not gone well and we thought it better to cancel and focus on the student events this weekend.
M2 Field Study in Pangani
The M2 students will be travelling to Pangani on Monday, 26th October with their Arusha counterparts for a week's field study on the coast and in Pangani town. They will return on Friday 30th October.
Outdoor Pursuits - Mandara
During the month of November the National Parks Authority allows school groups to undertake trips on Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro and we have a trip planned over every single weekend in November. The first of these is a trip to Mandara Hut - the first hut on Kilimanjaro at 2800m. This trip is designed for M1 students and older who wish to take part in their first walking trip on the mountains. It is an overnight trip leaving on Sunday, 1st November and returning on Monday afternoon 2nd November. About 20 students will be taking part from both campuses.
Parent Meetings
As a follow up to the information meetings held just prior to our break, we would like to have another meeting which will allow for more discussion. The focus of the meeting will be designing the school's finances for the coming school year. This is an opportunity for parent input. The days and times for the meetings at the various campuses are listed below.
Moshi: Tuesday, October 27 at 17:30
Arusha: Wednesday, October 28 at 13:30
As in the past, if there is a group of parents who would like to meet at a different time, please contact the appropriate school office with the request. It would be preferable to have a group of at least five to arrange an alternate meeting. Additionally, for those who cannot attend, suggestions can be forwarded by email.
We encourage you to attend and bring your ideas.

MYP Information Evening
We will be holding an MYP Information Evening on Thursday, 29th October at 6:30pm. If your child has recently joined M1, or if your child joined one of the other M1 to M5 classes this school year, or if you simply would like more information on the MYP, please do join us on Thursday evening. We will also make some printed information available for those parents who are unable to attend the meeting.
Student Calendar
One of our M5 students is designing a calendar for the coming school year 2010/11. She would like to survey parental interest and has asked parents to complete the attached simple survey form. This form can be returned to her either in printed form through the Moshi Campus reception, or by email to .
US Embassy Warden Message
The following US Embassy travel alert was issued last week:
October 15, 2009
The U.S. Department of State alerts American citizens to the possibility of election-related unrest as Zanzibar registers voters for the upcoming general elections expected October 2010. American citizens who choose to travel to Zanzibar during this period are advised to maintain a high level of security vigilance and avoid political rallies, centers where voter registrations are taking place, and related public gatherings. This replaces the Travel Alert of August 28, 2009, to reflect continued voter registration throughout the Archipelago of Zanzibar, which includes both islands of Pemba and Unguja. This Travel Alert expires on February 15, 2010.
Past elections in Zanzibar have featured violence during the campaign season, the election and especially in the days and weeks following announcement of the results. Since registration of voters began on the island of Pemba on July 6, 2009, there have been reports of civil unrest. Voter registration on Pemba Island is expected to conclude on January 10, 2010. Voter registration on the larger island of Unguja (also referred to as "Zanzibar") began September 12 and is expected to conclude February 14, 2010. A second round of voter registration is anticipated in late spring 2010 and may carry with it similar political tensions.
For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's Internet website http://travel.state.gov, where the current Travel Warnings and Public Announcements, including the World Wide Caution, can be found.
