International School Moshi Moshi Campus News - 18th December 2009 |
Direct from the Director
Dear Parents,As the first semester comes to a close, we are all focused on the upcoming holiday. Although we are from different cultures and practice different religions, we share the common messages of this holiday. Those are messages of good will and a hope for peace. Regardless of our individual beliefs and customs, we can all celebrate and practice acts of good will. Most certainly, we all share a common hope for peace. Peace in our personal lives, peace in our community and peace in the world. I invite you to not just to celebrate this but seek out how you can in some small way contribute to these common messages. On behalf of the staff of ISM I wish you all the very best of this very special season. Fees for 2010-11
The Governing Board held their regular meeting on Thursday, December 10th. At this meeting, the fees for the August 2010 to June 2011 school year where determined. The final decision was reached after reviewing information from the two extraordinary meetings and suggestions submitted from the ISM community through parent meetings or by letter. The fee schedule for the coming year is presented below. (All figures are in US dollars)
Goals:
On behalf of the Governing Board, I wish to thank our parent community for their ideas and participation in the meetings we have held concerning finances. Looking ahead to 2010
Thus far this school year, we have made a commitment to transparency and communication. We plan to carry this commitment into the New Year. In January, we will have parent meetings to answer any questions concerning the fee structure that is presented in this newsletter. We will also solicit topics from the parents for future meetings. We believe that the best way to move ISM forward is through continued dialogue as a learning community.Scenes of First Semester Highlights

An important announcement from the Science Department
RE: January 2010 D1 Field Trip to Pangani cancelled - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science and Societies subjects will hold regular classes for the week of Tuesday January 19 - Friday January 22, 2009 (Alternative trips to be offered in balance of the school year). The Science Department of ISM Moshi campus met last January to discuss the rationale and budget for the 2010 D1 Field Trip to Pangani. It was decided by the department that D1s will be attending regular classes through the week of January 18 - 22 and each subject group will be planning a separate subject group field trip to be held at a later time. This was not to be scheduled as a calendared event. Our budgeting for the science department had been a request to have the funds going towards the purchase of new science resources, books, and supplies. The remaining funds would go towards smaller daily excursions of a shorter duration (hopefully TPC, West Kili, or Pare Mountains) to collect daily environmental data for either Biology or Environmental Sciences. Group IV Projects may also need planning depending on what syllabus content has been covered by this time. Although a disappointment at this time, the Science Department would like to provide quality in the teaching of all of the science content and it was felt that a very large expenditure in taking a very large group (44 students - largest group to date) to Pangani would not be offering the students the quality and proper preparedness of science content regardless of the subject. The huge strain on the Science Department budget, yet the expectation to maintain all of its four sciences to the IBO calibre, is what we are striving to balance. For this academic school year, the department does not feel it would prudent, practical, nor necessary at this time to have this field trip. Typically, the field trip to Pangani has involved Environmental Science and/or Biology students going for a shorter stay and focusing only on these two subject areas. The department feels we can offer the same experimental data collection and experiences just as readily/effectively here in our labs or locally rather than transporting the equipment to Pangani with less than effective data collection and lab report submissions for the four science groups. We hope you will understand this change to the traditions of D1 field trips was decided to only help to provide the very best to our science students at ISM Moshi Campus. Kind regards, ISM Science Department - Moshi Campus International School Moshi In Closing
