Dear Parents,Second WeekThis has been a very busy week at ISM and we are beginning to finalise schedules and procedures. ECAs begin on the 3rd September and the opening hours for the pool are being finalised and will be available mid week. Please note upcoming events in the secondary and primary sections of this newsletter.Email and Phone ContactsWe are currently updating our lists of email, phone and emergency phone contacts. Class teachers and tutors are collecting this information from students. When complete we will use this new email mailing list for contact and newsletters.Sports StandYou may have noticed the new sports stand on the large field. We would like to thank the Social Club for their very kind and generous donation. The Social Club has worked tirelessly in the school supporting school events such as sports days, graduations and productions and run numerous successful events such as last year’s Jazz Night and film nights. We are extremely appreciative of the support the Social Club members have given the school and want to thank them for creating and promoting such positive support for ISM. Hats and waterI would like to remind parents and students again about hats and water. Students are to wear a hat outside during break and lunch otherwise they are to sit in the shade areas. Students must have their own water bottle, which can be filled, near the canteen.Tuesday TimetableA reminder that on Tuesday secondary classes finish at 2.50 p.m. which is 20 minutes later than primary classes. Primary students catching buses will be supervised for this 20 minutes. Primary students not catching buses should be picked up by parents and drivers at the normal time of 2.30 p.m.Canteen ServicesWe apologise for the inconvenience whilst the canteen is not operational. We will inform you when the canteen is able to re-open.Adrian Moody Head of Campus Secondary News CommunicationThank you to all the parents who came to Tuesday’s information session. The evening was useful to both teachers and parents for beginning the process of communication for the year. As always, communication between parents and teachers will be a welcome and valuable process throughout the school year and I encourage any parents who have questions, concerns or information they wish to share to please contact their child’s teachers, tutor, or mentor. For concerns of a more general nature, or questions about secondary issues, please contact me (the easiest way is via e-mail, at ). I also welcome any feedback from parents about the information session in the interests in improving next year’s event. All of us at ISM are committed to serving the needs of your children and providing the best possible education for them, and communication between home and school helps to make that a reality.Coffee MorningsTo again help improve the communication between home and school, we will have periodic coffee mornings to invite parents in for discussions about important topics such as the MYP, homework, students’ social life, adolescent psychology, etc. We’ll have our first secondary coffee morning of the year Tuesday, 28th August in the Performance Area. There’ll be no agenda for the morning, but this will be a chance for parents to meet me and raise any matters which are relevant. I will report back to the community in next week’s newsletter regarding our discussion, and any parents who can’t attend but wish to bring up an idea are very welcome to e-mail me.Community DaysThis past Wednesday, the M1 class spent much of the day off timetable, learning about one of the five Areas of Interaction in the MYP, Community & Service. The students brainstormed ideas about the school community and what they could do to help serve it. They came up with some wonderful ideas and they are enthusiastic about beginning projects they came up with in small groups. This will be an ongoing process, through which the students will work on projects both in school and outside of school. Each student in the MYP is expect to devote a set number of hours to community service throughout the year. Parents, please encourage your children to become involved in service projects which are meaningful and worthwhile to them and to your family.Next week, the M2 class will spend Wednesday (29 August) on their own Community Day, beginning the 2007-2008 school year’s Community & Service work. Extra-Curricular ActivitiesThis week you received a sign-up sheet for ECA’s, which will begin Monday, 3rd September. These activities are a valuable part of ISM’s secondary programme, allowing students to participate in team sports, community and service activities, and more. If your child hasn’t signed up for activities yet, please ensure that their form is turned in to his/her tutor on Monday morning.TripsThe class trips and Outdoor Pursuits programme are a valuable part of the culture and curriculum at ISM. This year’s trips are beginning very soon, with an M1 campcraft trip coming up next weekend (1-2 September), and the S5 trip to Tarangire in a very few weeks (12-14 September). Mr. Schofield is busy planning this year’s trips, and I know we will have a very successful and enjoyable field studies programme this year. Information will be coming home about your child’s trips, and I encourage you to look at the year’s calendar on the ISM website and mark the dates on your own calendars.John Iglar Head of Secondary Primary NewsDear Parents,I would like to welcome back the Mongardi family. The P1/2 M students are pleased to have Marcello back in the classroom. I would also like to thank Rosemary Davidson for ensuring the beginning week of school for our P1/2 class was a smooth transition. Both Marcello and Helen have their guitars tuned and ready for action. Did you know that in all P3/4 classes, the students have participated in a Gallery Walk of artistic expressions, they have delved into researching different artists styles and influences as well as showing their own creativity using a range of different mediums? Did you also know that they will be hosting our first Primary Share Time Assembly next Friday 31st August at 1.20pm in the performance area? Did you know that in all P5/6 classes, the students have been identifying connections between different systems within our community and how these systems impact on our lives? They have explored family trees, organigram’s of companies and government organizational structures that facilitate decision making. As a resulting factor of this the students are now in the process of electing a Primary Student Council. This group will take responsibility for initiating and following up different actions they agree upon under the guidance of Ms. Natalie Croome.
