Arusha Parent News: 31 August 07

  Dear Parents,

Evacuation Drills

This week we carried out our first fire evacuation drill and tested our alarm systems. We will continue these practices to ensure that students can quickly and safely evacuate buildings in the case of a fire.

We will also be conducting lockdown drills in the coming weeks. Staff also have been given information regarding earthquake procedures and we will be finalising procedures for the campus in the coming week.

Email and Phone Contacts

We are currently updating our lists of email, phone and emergency phone contacts. Class teachers and tutors are collecting this information from students. When complete we will use this new email mailing list for contact and newsletters. A form has been sent home to help with this process.

Trees

A small group of parents met on the campus on Monday morning to discuss landscaping options and shade for the students. This group will meet regularly to develop the campus. I would like to thanks Jane Duinmaijer for her kind donation of 25 native trees which will be planted next week to provide more shade for the students.

High Frequency Radio Station

This week we installed a high frequency radio tower and unit which, with the portable radio packs, will enable communication between the two campuses and students on OP and other trips.

Staffing

Today we are pleased to welcome back the Curley family. Lloyd will be back with P5/6L and Michele will be back with P5/6 and Secondary French on Monday. Alli Abd-el Rashid has been filling in for Michele during her absence and will return to Primary French and Kiswahili from Monday.

Coffee & Communication

On Tuesday, I met with a small group of parents for our first coffee morning of the year. The three of us had a talk that was both pleasant and informative, and I would like to thank Mrs. Sarah Skutt and Mrs. Maria Lieke for sharing their views and concerns with me. We discussed many things, but perhaps the overriding topic was that of home-school communication. We all agreed that it was very important and could be crucial not only in the education of children, but also in creating a successful experience at ISM for parents. We discussed ways in which we could improve communication, and we’ve already begun implementing some of the ideas here at school. I would encourage all parents to make the effort to ensure that the school has correct contact information for your family, and to take every opportunity to communicate with your child’s teachers as well as myself about your child’s education. By working together, parents and school can create the conditions for great success for your child.

Community and Service

The C&S work of our students is going in full swing, with M2 students going to Burkaa kindergartens on Wednesday and a group of M1 girls holding a very successful bake sale on Thursday, raising money to buy books for the school library. Next week, the M3 class will spend Tuesday (4th September) on their own Community Day, beginning their C&S work for this school year.

Student Council

The Student Council is off and running, and the students representing the secondary are eager to accomplish many things this year. They are interested in not only organizing events, but also having input on how things are done and they have some good ideas. Keep your eyes and ears open for some of the many exciting things they’ll be coming up with over the year.

Their first action is to organize a Movie Night on Friday, 7 September at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Area. They are finalizing their choice of film and will be getting more information out to students and parents early next week, but meanwhile families should mark their calendar!

Share Time Assembly

I would like to thank and congratulate the P3/4 team for a very informative, knowledgeable and confident presentation of how powerful visual arts can be in expressing individual feelings. Did you see the gallery walk set up on the stage of the performance area during the past 2 weeks. I can’t wait to see what is coming next as part of their summative assessment tasks for this P3/4 unit of inquiry titled "Art Attack"

The Language of Mathematics

Have you seen the many observations and recordings of 2 D shapes in P1/2M? Students are using mathematical vocabulary to explain the properties of shapes they have found around our school. While in P5/6, students are using math vocabulary to describe mathematical operations, place value and multiples.

Write Dance – Connective Cursive Handwriting

Write dance is a method that integrates the whole body in the development of coordination of hands and fingers. With the aid of imaginative drawing, music, rhymes, rhythm and games the conditions for a flowing and joined up hand are created. An understanding is created of the interdependence between the body movements and small hand/finger movements. The abstract movements are turned into cursive lines.

Write dance is a method based on experiences gained in the writing psychology that was developed in France, and writing teaching which has its roots in Germany, but which can be found in all primary classes at ISMAC. Specifically, search out the different forms, movements and distribution of stokes in P1/2D & P3/4L.

Primary Student Council

We would like to congratulate the following students who after the election process have been voted to represent ISM on the Primary Student Council for 2007 – 2008

Nicolas Kuserow, Valientine Leclerq, Sarah Ramadan, Arend Peters, Maike Kusserow, Roos, de Raadt, Aida Niskala, Tania Kagangana, Shy Zvulun, Romana Van der Land, Able Nyang’oro, Georgie Bouwknecht.

In conjunction with the P5/6 unit of inquiry called "Law & Order" the children in the Student Council will have the opportunity and responsibility for taking some action to make their group more dynamic and visible in our school. These newly elected representatives of the student body have many good ideas for change and improvement. We hope that our whole school community will support their efforts.
