Dear Parents,BusesWe will ensure that when we provide buses for school trips that there will be seatbelts for the students. Unfortunately, one of the buses today for the Moshi sports weekend did not have seatbelts as we requested from the company. Before it proceeded on to Moshi it was sent back to the depot and exchanged for a bus with seatbelts. We apologise for the delay for these students and will ensure every bus is checked and has seatbelts as required.SecurityGiven recent incidences we are concerned about security and so that we can ensure that no unknown vehicle comes on campus we will be issuing ISM stickers for cars. These stickers are available from Loise at reception. You will require one per vehicle. Please place the sticker on the right side of your windscreen. Shortly the gate askaris will not let any vehicle in unless this sticker is displayed.NewslettersWe are now using the new mailing list. If you or anyone you know has not received this newsletter please contact me. As always this newsletter is sent by email and posted on the website.US EmbassyRepresentatives from the US Embassy will be on the Arusha Campus on Wednesday. October 3rd, in the afternoon.Canteen ServicesAs you will be aware the canteen is currently closed. We currently have a legal dispute with the outgoing operator and hope to reopen in four weeks.Adrian Moody Head of Campus Secondary NewsSports WeekendAs this letter is going out, over 50 of our secondary students are heading to the Moshi campus for an overnight sports weekend. It will be a fun and physically challenging event – a chance for friendly competition among the school’s three houses (Kibo, Mawenzi and Meru), and for students to participate in a variety of sports. It’s also a great time for our students to come together with their fellow students on the Moshi campus. Many thanks to Charles Schofield for organizing our campus’ participation, and thanks to the many parents and teachers who are going to support and assist.MYP Technology WorkshopAll parents are invited to attend a special workshop for parents on the MYP Technology curriculum and programme on Wednesday, 26 September, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. It will be a participatory workshop, with parents not only being told how the programme works, but also having a chance to actively go through the same process the students do. Christine Matemu and Steve Brown will explain how the Design Cycle is used in Information Technology and Design Technology and what is expected of the students. All parents are invited to attend to learn more about the IT and DT programmes in the MYP.Community and ServiceStudents continue to do work in Community & Service areas, both within school and outside school. Just this week we had a bake sale by a group of M1 girls, who want to help out the school community by buying more bins to place around the school to help with keeping the school clean. Well done, girls!BusesRecently, there have been some concerns raised about student behaviour on buses. I have spoken with secondary students about this, and I would ask all parents to speak with their students about showing respect for other (particularly younger) students on the buses, as well as respect for the drivers. We will respond to inappropriate student behaviour on buses the same way we respond to inappropriate behaviour at school.John Iglar Head of Secondary Primary NewsP5/6 Field Trip to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR)It was a privilege to be a part of the P5/6 field trip to ICTR this Monday. The students were open-minded, well-balanced ambassadors for our school. They asked meaningful and relevant questions to Prosecutors Mr. Moses and Ms Mobberley, Judge Arrey, and court reporter Roxanne. Through this experience, students were able to make connections within their study on ‘Law and Order’ and answer questions about the nature of justice, approaches to decision making and the purpose and function of rules. On behalf of the students, I would like to thank their teachers; Ms. Croome, Mr. Curley, Mrs. Iglar and parents, Mrs. Ramandan and Mrs Leclerq who accompanied us on this trip. The London Academy of Music and Dramatic ArtI would like to congratulate Ejofon Odjurhe who attained a Pass in the Preparatory section of the LAMDA examinations. Ejofon will be presented with her certificate at next weeks P5/6 hosted Share Time Assembly. KARIBU!Parent Workshops & Coffee MorningsI would like to thank the parents, both experienced and new who took the time to attend the first PYP workshop for this school year. We identified what we already knew about the PYP, delved into the history, mission statement and philosophy, asked and answered questions, then, in small groups became experts in different elements of the programme: The written, taught and assessed curriculum, The Essential Elements and the Trans disciplinary themes. If you missed the workshop but would still like to know more, please come and read some of the notes that were shared on the board outside my room.Summary The PYP focuses on the heart as well as the mind and addresses social, physical, emotion and al cultural needs as well as academic ones. The traditional academic subjects are valued. In addition, there is an emphasis on the balance between the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills and the search for meaning and understanding. The programme provides opportunity for learners to construct meaning, principally through concept driven inquiry. The threads of children’s learning are brought together in the trans disciplinary programme of inquiry, which in turn allows them to make connections with life outside the school. The PYP enables children to develop sensitivity to the experiences of others through the curriculum, the attributes listed in the student profile, the attitudes that are explicit elements of the programme, and the expectations of socially responsible action as a result of the learning experiences. ( Head LiceIf at any time your child has head lice, please ensure the successful treatment of his / her hair before sending them to school. We would also appreciate that you inform the school as soon as possible in order that all parents can be advised to check their child’s hair to reduce the chances of head lice epidemics. Next week Mary; our school nurse, will be undertaking a routine check of all students and staff in the primary school.Primary Student CouncilI would like to congratulate our primary student council on their well researched initiative regarding the wearing of hats. They found out, and are sharing their knowledge about the problems that can be caused by not wearing a hat, which are:
Next week the primary and secondary student councils will be meeting to discuss and address concerns students have regarding the behavior and practices of some students while travelling on our privately run school buses. I am sure they will keep you informed with their findings and how they are going to approach these issues through to agreeable resolutions. Betty Brown Head of Primary |
