Arusha Parent News: 28 September 07

  Dear Parents,

US Embassy

Representatives from the US Embassy will be on the Arusha Campus this Wednesday. October 3rd, from 1.30 p.m.

Security

Given recent incidents, we are concerned about security and so that we can ensure that no unknown vehicle comes on campus we will be issuing ISM stickers for cars. These stickers are available from Loise at reception. You will require one per vehicle. Please place the sticker on the right side of your windscreen.

Please note from Tuesday this week, the gate askaris will not let any vehicle in unless this sticker is displayed.

Lost and Found

Loise has begun a lost and found in the administration area. Items found are relayed to students and available for checking on Friday afternoon outside the office.

ECAs

The second round of ECAs will soon begin and a sheet will be sent home shortly.

Newsletter

We are now using the new mailing list. If you or anyone you know has not received this newsletter please contact me. As always this newsletter is sent by email and posted on the website.

MYP Technology Workshop

Thanks to Steve Brown and Christine Matemu and to all the parents who came to hear their workshop on Wednesday. They presented the MYP Technology Programme and how the Design Cycle works. Technology is taught very differently in the MYP than in other systems, focusing on process and analysis of problems rather than focusing on specific skills. We therefore felt it appropriate for parents to hear more about how technology is taught at ISM and the kinds of skills and concepts the students learn. We hope to have similar workshops throughout the year. If you have an area you would like to know more about, please let me know and we’ll try to organize an information session.

Welcome back!

Welcome back to Ana Kosic in M2. She has returned to Arusha from Sarajevo, and she’s glad to be back at ISM. We’re glad to have you back, Ana!

M2 to Pangani

The M2 class is off to Pangani next week, for a week-long study of the coastal peoples, and how and why people have moved into and out of the area. They should learn a lot and have a lot of fun. Safari njema to Mr. Brown and Ms. Gorman and all the M2 students!

Buses

We continue to get feedback from students about behaviour and other issues on the buses to and from school. I have been speaking with the Secondary Student Council about the matter, and Ms. Croome has spoken with the Primary Student Council. We will have a joint council meeting next week and the students plan to create a set of rules and behaviour expectations which we will then implement. Again, I ask all parents to please speak with your children about behaviour on the buses, remind them to be respectful of both other students and the drivers, and to inform me of problems which arise. We will respond to misbehaviour on the buses in a manner similar to misbehaviour at school.

Dress Code

After a meeting with representatives from the P1/2M class, it has been agreed that it is preferable for students to wear runners / trainers / sneakers to school, especially if they are running, climbing or playing football or hockey at snack and lunch time. The wearing of football boots in class during instruction time is not allowed, however students are allowed to change into their football boots for lunch time play as well as their football ECA. I would like to congratulate Leland Curley, Hunter Strand and Arthur Kubai for the well thought points for discussion as well as their open-minded manner in which they approached this issue.

As the weather warms up, students also need to be mindful of making the right choice in the morning when choosing tops to wear to school. A reminder that shoe string strap tops and tops that show the midriff are not a part of the school dress code.

Share Time Assembly

Congratulations to the P5/6 students for a thought provoking and knowledgeable share time assembly about peace and what a court room looks like, the skilful Scottish dancers, P1/2 Kiswahili and our special ‘Secret Secondary’ Mr. Iglar. Did you know that Mr. Iglar was here 15 years ago?, that he teaches Math and IT and that he has lived in Kenya?

Art Exhibition

Next week the P3/4 classes will be hosting an Art Exhibition in the performance area. Don’t miss it! Mark your calendars for Thursday 4th October 1.30 p.m. - 2.30 p.m.

Friday 5th October: 1.00pm - 1.45pm, P5/6N will be sharing their dramatizations of the different styles of leadership - Can you guess which government systems they will be sharing? I wonder how you could find out?, Which system would you prefer to be governed by? Karibu!
