Dear Parents,StaffingWe are pleased that Mike Johnson has returned from NZ and that classes in humanities are continuing as normal. Leebeth Armon is returning to the UK at the end of this term and our thoughts are with her and her family during their absence. Linda Willms will take over middle school Art and IGCSE Art and Ishbel Brydon will take Linda’s P3/4 class and the secondary IGCSE ESL class when Linda is not available. This is the same arrangement that we have in place currently.SuzukiFrom next term the Suzuki school will move from the Arusha Campus and will move to their new premises. We have been very happy to provide support along with rooms in the music block and the use of our accounts office. We are very pleased to have seen the growth of the programme over the years and we wish them the very best and hope that ISM may continue to have links with the programme in some way in the future.Parent AssociationThe Parent Association has had two committee meetings in the few weeks since its inauguration and they hope to be able to send out minutes and other details by email early next week.Parental ConcernsFrom time to time parents may have concerns concerning various aspects of the school. If these concern your child directly or relate to one particular area, it is best to first discuss the issue with the appropriate teacher as matters can often be resolved easily at that level. Should you subsequently wish to discuss the matter further, please approach the Head of Primary, Head of Secondary or Head of Boarding as appropriate. On more general school matters you are very welcome to discuss these with the Head of Campus. If you still believe that the matter is unresolved after this, then please arrange to discuss further with the CEO.In such a complex organisation as a school, mistakes do unfortunately happen and we do also benefit from the constructive feedback that parents provide. The best way to resolve any difficulties or concerns is to address them to the person or people most responsible for them and we hope that parents will feel comfortable in approaching us within the school. DivingKasa Divers will continue their diving course after school on February 7th and 8th.S5 IGCSE Mock examinationsThe mock examinations will begin Monday, January 28th.SummitThe latest version of the Summit magazine is available and we would like to thank Annette Wood and Catriona Sutherland for putting together another excellent issue. A copy is being sent home with students; however, should you not receive a copy, please collect one from Loise at reception.Sick BayFrom next term the sick bay will be located in the end room next to the EC classroom. This is a much larger and healthier space for students to use. The current sick bay will be used as a secure place for student files.Adopt A GardenThe Adopt a Garden is gaining much interest and the first garden is steadily taking shape. Two more gardens have been planned for development from January and there will be a gardening activity as part of the ECAs next term.If you are interested in adopting a garden or helping out with current work please contact us. Term 2 ArrangementsClasses will be begin at the normal time on Tuesday, January 15.Lost and FoundPlease remember to check the lost and found today and over the next couple of days. We will soon be donating long outstanding items to charity.Upcoming Events
End of Term ArrangementsClasses will finish for secondary students at 12.00 p.m. this Wednesday, 19th December and students will be free to leave school at that time. There will be a full school assembly at 11.00 a.m. in the performance area.On Wednesday, which is the last day of term, we would like students, teachers and everyone to dress in holiday/festive clothing. During assembly we will be singing a couple of Christmas carols and some students are preparing some presentations about Muslim and Hindu and Jewish holidays. We would like everyone to get into the holiday spirit! Regards Adrian Moody Head of Campus Secondary NewsEnd of term reportsSecondary reports will be sent home with students on Wednesday, 19 December.Culminating ActivitiesOn Monday and Tuesday (17-18 December), students in M1-M3 will be participating in their end of term culminating activities. The teachers have designed some activities which are fun, challenging and serve to complete the students’ inquiries into their guiding questions for the term. M1 will be investigating communities, by focusing on the roles people play in the ISM community, particularly our ancillary and support staff. M2 will be investigating “Why move?” by looking at the experience of refugees in various ways. M3 will be investigating “What do we need to survive?” by fending for themselves in the wilds of Tanzania! It should be fun and exciting for all students, and will serve as a great conclusion to their work this term.M4 Personal ProjectStudents in the M4 class will spend Monday and Tuesday beginning the process of choosing and preparing for their Personal Projects. The Personal Project is a culminating activity in the Middle Years Programme, designed to be a challenging but enjoyable project in which students select a theme which interests them and design a project incorporating several of the MYP Areas of Interaction (Homo Faber, Environment, Health and Social Education, Community and Service, and Approaches to Learning). This project begins in the M4 year and carries forward into the M5 year. It is a significant piece of work, and can be quite challenging, but no doubt our M4 students will choose projects which will stretch them and allow them to bring their own areas of personal interest into their learning.IGCSE Mock ExamsThe S5 students will spend Monday and Tuesday preparing for the IGCSE Mock exams, which will take place at the end of January. (28 January – 1 February) Students will have some time for some coursework, and will be given some tips and advice for revision in all their subjects, as well as receive some lessons in time management, study techniques, etc.KwaheriniOn behalf of all the secondary teachers and students, I would like to wish all our departing students farewell. We are sad to see Christopher and Phoebe, Jibrail, Apphia, and Janne all leave us, but we wish you all well in your new homes and schools. Remember us, as we will all remember you well.John Iglar Head of Secondary Primary NewsWOW! The term is coming to a close and we are still deep in discovery! The P3/4 students enjoyed participating in their archaeological dig today and the P1/2s enjoyed visiting and becoming more knowledgeable about the process of planting, nurturing and picking coffee at Burka Coffee Estate. Thank you to Saskia and Alex Rechsteiner for accommodating our students and providing a wonderful snack!Meanwhile the P5/6 students have finished writing scripts and are learning their lines for the commercials they have written in preparation for our Primary Perspectives – PPTV – "An Evening's Viewing" Show that will be presented to ISM and our wider community in the second week of the new term. P3/4 Overnight Camp to Lake ManyaraWhat a fabulous opportunity for our children to spend time with each other outside of the school grounds. Travelling to and from Lake Manyara was just as much a highlight as the game drive in the school blue lorry, swimming, sleeping in tents and eating the large quantity of delicious food prepared by the school chef from the Moshi Campus. For the children in P3/4 Kara, it was also an opportunity to form life long friendships with their counterparts from the Moshi Campus. On behalf of the ISM community I would like to congratulate all the teachers, teaching assistants and drivers for the enthusiasm and commitment to providing such a worthwhile and valuable experience for our very well-behaved P3/4 students.Reflective quotes from the children include: “Shy was a risk-taker because she slept away from home without her parents for the first time” “Laurel was caring because she made sure everyone was feeling ok” “Bo showed that he was knowledgeable when he described the different behaviours and roles of the hippopotamus” “Ms Samantha was a risk taker and very brave when the elephant got close to her car” Arusha Community Craft FairA special thank you to the ISMAC Social Club members: Deb Mavroudis, Franco Boner, Florence Leclerq, Gladys Odjurhe, Schultze, Ekko Oosterhuis, Stephen Brown and especially Madeline Oosterhuis (Co-organizer) who gave freely of their time to serve refreshments at this successful event. This fundraising exercise enabled the social club to raise just over a million shillings towards school related initiatives.Further to this, tea-towel sales are going well – Make sure you get yours before the holiday break!
Lost PropertyWe seem to have a few great pieces of clothing, drink bottles, lunch boxes and hats in the lost property baskets that Loise is now organizing. It would be much appreciated if you can come to the office next week and have a double check that none of these items belong to your children. Items not collected by next Wednesday will be donated to a local orphanage.
