Dear Parents,Welcome BackI would like to welcome back all students, teachers and parents to the new term and I hope that you had a safe and happy break. There are many things planned for this term beginning next week with the Primary production on Thursday and Friday and S5 IGCSE mock examinations the following week. The students and teachers have been working hard on this production and we look forward to this community event. The latest calendar is attached to this newsletter.Sick BayThe sick bay has now been relocated in the end room next to the EC classroom in primary. This is a much larger and healthier space for students to use.DivingKasa Divers will not be holding their diving course after school on February 7th and 8th as planned.SummitAll students should have received a printed copy of the December Summit magazine. If you would like to receive a digital copy, please download it from www.ismoshi.org/Download.htm.Adopt A GardenThe Adopt a Garden is gaining much interest and several gardens are almost complete. More gardens have been planned for development from January and there will be a gardening activity as part of the ECAs this term.If you are interested in adopting a garden or helping out with current work please contact us. IGCSE Mock ExamsS5 students are gearing up for the IGCSE mock exams, which will take place during the week of 28 January - 1 February. The mock exams are a big challenge, but the students are committed to meeting that challenge. Good luck to them in their revision and examinations! (Special note to S5 parents: A timetable of examination times will be ready to go home early next week. S5 students need only be at school for their examinations, and may arrive late or leave early as their timetable allows. Some exams may need to extend beyond the typical scheduled day. Please make drop-off and pick-up plans for that week accordingly.)Congratulations!Last term, several committed music students put in extra time and effort into studying for and sitting the ABRSM Music theory examinations, they did very well! Congratulations to Emma Kalaitzakis and Iptisam Niskala for obtaining a pass grade. Well done to Anna-Catharina Lieke, Darsh Pandit and Damon Mavroudis for obtaining a merit grade. And bravo!! to Phoebe Moses and Jamie Strand for earning a distinction grade! Hearty congratulations to all of our accomplished music students and to Miss Gorman for helping the students in their studies.John Iglar Head of Secondary Primary NewsJudging by the big smiles and healthy glows as everyone strides with renewed energy into the school grounds I am concluding that a well earned rest was enjoyed by all. But wait! There is nothing like a ‘Show’ to get the blood pumping a bit quicker around the body and to add another bounce in our steps. And that is exactly what is happening in the primary school this first week of term. With the holidays behind us EXCITEMENT and ENTHUSIASM is at an all time high, as we all pull together our ‘student written and directed’ performance of Thursday 24th January at 1pm Or Friday 25th January at 7pm 5,000 per adult & 2,000 per child (Door sales only) We have invited our neighboring schools to attend a special ‘free’ performance on Friday 25th at 10.00 a.m. Karibu Sana! Welcome back to Venkat Chandra and his family from Nairobi, It is lovely to have you back in the ISM community. We would also like to welcome our teacher trainees from New Jersey: Sarah Damaini who will be working in P1/2 with Diana, Laura Walker who will be working in EC with Kristine and P1/2 with Marcello and Adrienne Campbell who will be working with Mr. Schofield teaching secondary PE. Early Childhood 2008/2009After 3 years of commitment and the sharing of her knowledge to our school community, we will be saying farewell to Ms Kristine Zydel at the end of this school year. While we still enjoy the benefits of her EC programme to the end of the year we would like to wish her all the best in her pursuit of another educational opportunity. We are very pleased to announce that Mrs. Samantha Mongardi will be our new Early Childhood teacher and Ms Ann-Joyce Mwamafupa will be her teaching assistant. Specific information about how each day will be structured will be shared in more depth next term. Should you wish to discuss any aspect of the EC program for next year with me I am more than happy to meet with you. If you know of other friends / families who may be interested in our early childhood program please feel free to pass on my email address: RemindersPE Kit - Students are to wear a white ISM logo T Shirt and black or navy blue shorts with trainers (sports runners) on PE skills and Sport days. During this term students will explore Gymnastic movement during their PE skills lessons and small and large ball skills in game situations during their sport lessons.Students are to bring their swimmers, towel and malapa’s for swimming lessons. Swimming lessons will take place once a week for the remainder of the school year. Pokemon Craze - A passing phase or here to stay?It is evident that during the holiday break a large number of students were fortunate enough to get their own set of Pokemon Cards. While the cards are bright and colourful, they are also another opportunity for students to practise skills in mathematics (points, power, larger and smaller than numbers, numbers to 100), communication skills (negotiating, persuading, convincing, use of adjectives) as well as showing how knowledgeable they are about what these cards mean. If you are unsure of what I am talking about, have a chat with Seba or David Rechsteiner - they are very knowledgeable!, I continue to learn a lot from them!!!However, as is life, hurt feelings or feelings of unfairness may creep in and therefore I am asking parent support in talking to your children about the different skills listed above and encourage them to reflect on our learner profiles, specifically open-mindedness, caring and thinkers when playing the ‘trading game’. At present there is an air of adventurous calm in the playground regarding Pokemon cards and I am confident that this sensitivity will remain. Important Dates for this term - so far!
