Arusha Parent News: 8 February 2008

  Dear Parents,

Leebeth Armon

We are all very saddened by the news about Leebeth who passed away Tuesday night. She was such a wonderful teacher and colleague and she had an enormous contribution to our students here at ISM who grieve the loss of someone who made an extraordinary impact on their lives.

We wish to express our sadness and our thanks for the time we had with Leebeth and our sympathy and condolences to David, Apphia, Megan and Jacob at this time.

Members of the community who wish to express their condolences may contact the family at .

New Students

Whilst the uncertain situation in Kenya continues, we are very aware that there are a number of families whose children were in school there and who are now considering seeking new options for their children. If you know of any such families who might possibly be considering ISM, I would be very grateful if you could encourage them to contact us. We are happy to arrange a "trial" day in classes or an evening/night in boarding in Moshi for students who wish to get a taste of what ISM has to offer. Please find attached a letter addressed to any such families which you are welcome to pass on.

Kilimanjaro Marathon & Fun Run

On Sunday March 2nd, the Kilimanjaro Marathon will take place from Moshi. There is also a half marathon and a 5km Fun Run. We would like to raise an ISM team of students, parents, teachers and others to run (or even walk) in any of these races and to help us to raise additional funds for our Scholarship Programme. If each participant could raise just TSh 20,000/-, this could help the fund considerably. For more details, please go to www.ismoshi.org/marathon or contact Sarah Jamieson on or see the posters in the school. This could be a great family and school event! Closing date for registration for the ISM team is 15th February.

ABRSM Music Practical Exams

If your child would like to take a musical instrument practical examination in May, could you please let Andrena Gorman know. The closing date for registration for these exams is Friday, 8th February.

Scholarship Programme

ISM is now inviting applications from Tanzanian Form 4 Leavers (whose results were published last week) to join our diploma programme in August 2008 on a full tuition and boarding scholarship. If you know of any students of exceptional ability, please encourage them to review the details and criteria for application at www.ismoshi.org/scholarship. The closing date for applications is 20th February.

Parent Association

The Parent Association held their first meeting of 2008 last week in Arusha. All parents are welcome to meet the members of the Parent Association for tea/coffee on Wednesday, 20th February in Room 15 in Moshi Campus from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a similar event on the Arusha Campus from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, 12th March.

Boarding Meeting in Arusha

This term's Boarding meeting for Arusha based parents will take place on Friday, March 7th beginning at 12.30 p.m. The venue will be the Blue Heron. If you are based in Arusha - or will be travelling in the region - we invite you to attend. Richard Eaton will be accompanied by Andrew Mackenzie, our boarding parent responsible for secondary boys, and Sunita Somaiya, the Senior Boarding Parent. Please forward any items you would like Richard to put on the agenda.

School Photographs

School photographs will be taken on Monday, 11th February and Tuesday, 12th February. Individual photos and class photos will be taken. The charges for photos per picture per person are:-
5"x7" Tsh. 5,000/=
6"x8" Tsh. 7,000/=
8"x10" Tsh. 10,000/=
8"x12" Tsh. 12,000/=.

ABRSM Music Examinations

Only a very small number of people have registered for the February ABRSM theory examinations and the deadline for registration has now passed.

Capital Development Fees

In another move to encourage increased enrolment, the Board has now agreed to spread Capital Development Fee payments over three years. Hence, instead of a new student needing to pay $2150 in Capital Development Fees before joining the school or before moving to P1, parents can now pay $700 per year for three years.

Pool Use

I would like to remind parents that the pool is available for use but you are required to obtain a membership card. These are available from reception. Daily passes may be bought from the lifeguards on the weekends.
