Dear Parents,
P5 Field Trip to Sibusisu
The P5 students at I.S.M. have been working hard on their latest inquiry ‘Who Am I to Judge’. Students learned about prejudice and stereotyping as ways individuals or groups can judge others. Recently the P5 classes from both Moshi and Arusha campuses were asked to create and present a made up culture as a means of immersing individuals into a completely different environment. As a result students found themselves in an unfamiliar situation and outside of their own comfort zone. Pupils were left to analyze and judge the actions of others in an inquiring and critical manner.Mr. Holt’s class from Moshi as well as all P5 students from Arusha traveled to Sibusisu center for the mentally challenged located east of Arusha near Kigongoni lodge. This beautiful facility provides respite and care for over 1,400 mentally and physically handicapped people. The students role played their cultures to small groups from each of I.S.M.’s campus and were asked to ‘break the code’ of the other culture. Later students were debriefed and discussed the judgments they made as well the difficulties they faced when unaware of their surroundings. Next the students were led by Sibusisu’s head teacher Tina, Mr. Kamaro and Saskia around the Sibusisu facility. Students interacted with physically and mentally handicapped children throughout the rest of their time visiting Sibusisu. Again students were subjected to unfamiliar surroundings and left to judge others outside of their comfort zone. Each of the P5’s demonstrated respect, empathy, tolerance and a mature approach throughout there field trip experience. We would like to thank all students and parents for bringing toys and clothing for the Sibusisu facility. Any other clothing or toys you would like to donate can be dropped off at one of the P5/6 classrooms. Sibusisu would appreciate any donations as their numbers continue to grow. - Lloyd Curley. P1/2 Field Trip to town
The P1/2 team would like to thank the parents for transporting and supervising the students on their field trip to town this week. The trip was fantastic and students enjoyed buying postcards and stamps as well as getting a closer look at the clock tower. Next week the students continue their investigations of communities and visit our local Tanzanian village in Olasiti. While there, the children will be observing, discussing and visiting places in the villages in order to identify similarities and differences between Arusha town and this village. - Marcello Mongardi.
PYP Exhibition
In the final year of the PYP, students participate in a culminating project, the PYP Exhibition. This requires that each student in P6 demonstrates engagement with the 5 essential elements of the programme; Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, Concepts and Actions. It is a trans disciplinary inquiry conducted in the spirit of personal and shared responsibility. It is a summative assessment activity that is a celebration of students moving from the PYP into MYP.The Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of a PYP school and student, synthesizing the essential elements of the PYP, and sharing them with the whole school community. It is an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the learner profile that have been developing throughout their engagement with the PYP. There will be a PYP Exhibition meeting for parents of P6 students on Wednesday 23rd April at 2pm in Natalie Croome’s classroom. The P6 students will share their understanding of their Exhibition Research with you on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 May) Music
All primary students need to be reminded to bring their recorders to school on Music day. When you attend our Share Time assembly next Friday you will be treated to the musical talents of our students. Karibu!Betty Brown Head of Primary | Available on the web... |
