Idd el Fittr
At the end of the Islamic Holy month of Ramadan, there are two days of national holiday to celebrate the event. The dates of this holiday will not be announced until the night immediately before the holiday (when the moon has been sighted) which has caused some difficulties for some families. This year ISM has planned to celebrate the Idd on Thursday and Friday, 2nd and 3rd October. Therefore there WILL be classes on Wednesday, 1st October irrespective of any official announcements and we will expect all students to attend on this day. Of course, Muslim students will be excused attendance at school if their own celebrations of Idd occur earlier than this.
Wednesday, 1st October
There will be classes and an assembly for all students on Wednesday, 1st October from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. After this time students will be free to return home.
Russian Performance
Pavel Khlopovski, Russian guitarist, will be performing on the Arusha Campus on Sunday, 2nd November. Tickets will be on sale soon.
Dates to remember
  • Wednesday, September 24 - CCAs finish
  • Saturday, September 27 - Interschool Athletics - Arusha

Secondary News
School Spirit
The Secondary Student Council has proclaimed next week Spirit Week! Parents & students, show your school spirit and have some fun!
  • Monday: Famous Couples/Twin Day - Coordinate with a friend: dress up as a famous couple (Sonny & Cher, Bert & Ernie, Calvin & Hobbes), or just dress alike.
  • Tuesday: Pyjama Day - Get up late and don't bother to change!
  • Wednesday: Teacher mix-up day - Students take a break and give the teachers a chance to be silly.
  • Thursday: Superhero Day - Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's...
  • Friday: Interhouse Athletics Day - wear your house colours! Kibo - blue, Mawenzi - green, Meru - yellow. Rah rah!!
Sports: Inter-house & Inter-school
Next Friday, we will have an inter-house athletics day for both primary and secondary students. Come cheer your team - and don't forget to wear your colour! On Saturday, we'll have a competition against other schools. Come cheer on ISM.
Interim Reports
Secondary teachers are preparing interim reports for all secondary students. These will give parents and students some feedback on student performance during the first quarter of the year. Interim reports will go home on Monday, 29 September.
Parent Conferences
We will be organizing parent conferences for the afternoons of Tuesday, 30 September, and Thursday, 16 October (after the break). We will specifically be inviting parents of new secondary students as well as parents of students with whom teachers need to meet. All parents are, of course, welcome to sign up for conferences with teachers. There will be a sign-up sheet at reception in the school's front office.
Homework
As part of our continuing effort to help students be well-balanced between school and home life, we are sending home a homework tracking sheet for a week. Parents, please help your students complete this sheet to help us have information about the amount of homework and the time spent on it.

Next week at our P1/2 EC hosted Share Time assembly, the student council will be introducing an initiative to recycle foods for composting. Look for the coloured garbage cans in the near future. We are looking forward to this and many more student initiatives throughout the year.
Under-8 Football
Congratulations to all our under-8 footballers who, through the organization of Mr. Charles Schofield enjoyed a skilful afternoon of football against St Constantine's and Braeburn. All games resulted in a draw. I would like to thank all our parents for a wonderful turnout and for the watermelon, chuchus and drinks which were enjoyed by all the hot sweaty players, teachers and parents.
Z & M Art Club
I would like to congratulate both Zainab Dakik and Munira Mohamadali for their latest initiative. Both P6 girls have set up a lunch time Art club that allows P2,3,4 students to "get the real experience of art". Overall organization including resourcing is planned and time and behavior management is carefully monitored. It is pleasing to see these girls taking ‘action towards providing a cocurricular activity in an area they feel students would benefit. Both Zainab and Munira look forward to show-casing some of their group's work later in the year. Keep up the great work girls!
P3/4 'I Am Unique Bags'
I have seen snippets of what is in some bags, read index tabs for special items, viewed timelines and read through some informative journals. AMAZING! As the P3/4 class works towards presentation of their summative assessment task on Tuesday, 29th September, it is pleasing to see students celebrating how unique, caring and accomplished they have all become and will continue to be. I am sure you will all enjoy the presentations they are compiling. I can already feel a sense of pride and ownership sneaking in.
Parent Workshop
On Tuesday 28th October (don't panic - this is next term!) we will be holding our first parent workshop titled: Reading through inquiry in the PYP. During this workshop we will be exploring classroom literacy practices in action at ISM Arusha and learning about the process of actively and reflectively engaging students as problem-posers and problem-solvers while reading through the use of Language Labs and Literature Circles.
