Congratulations to ISM Arusha Campus for winning the Interschool Athletics Competition. The day was a huge success and it was a pleasure to see so many members of the community involved. Thank you to Charles Schofield for organising the event. Congratulations to ISM Moshi, Braeburn and St Constantine's who participated strongly in the event.
Wednesday, 1st October
There will be classes and an assembly for all students on Wednesday, 1st October from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. After this time students will be free to return home.
Lost and Found
There are a lot of clothes and hats in lost and found. Please check this week if your child has left any items. Lost and found items are hung outside the reception each day.
Russian Performance
Pavel Khlopovski, Russian guitarist, will be performing on the Arusha Campus on Sunday, 2nd November. Tickets will be on sale soon.
Idd el Fittr
At the end of the Islamic Holy month of Ramadan, there are two days of national holiday to celebrate the event. The dates of this holiday will not be announced until the night immediately before the holiday (when the moon has been sighted) which has caused some difficulties for some families. This year ISM has planned to celebrate the Idd on Thursday and Friday, 2nd and 3rd October. Therefore there WILL be classes on Wednesday, 1st October irrespective of any official announcements and we will expect all students to attend on this day. Of course, Muslim students will be excused attendance at school if their own celebrations of Idd occur earlier than this.
Kilimanjaro Rugby Sevens
The Kilimanjaro Rugby 7s, which features an adult tournament for clubs from Tanzania and Kenya, and an under-19 schools tournament, will now be held on Saturday, 4th October and not on 11th as previously advertised.

Secondary News
School Spirit
This week has been a fun and exciting week, with students and teachers sharing silly get-ups and lots of laughs. Congratulations to the Student Council for organizing a successful spirit week!
Sports: Inter-house & Inter-school
Well done to Charles Schofield & the Athletic Council - and the Primary PE teachers - for organizing a successful and exciting House Athletics day on Friday. No doubt the inter-school sports day on Saturday will also be a great success!
Interim Reports
Parents, please expect Interim Reports to go home with your child(ren) on Monday, 29 September. These are intended to be a brief report on student achievement and effort up to now, with a brief comment on successes and areas to improve.
Parent Conferences
If you haven't signed up for a conference yet, please do so in the front office. We've set aside the afternoons of Tuesday, 30 September, and Thursday, 16 October (after the break) for conferences.
Homework
Secondary teachers met to discuss homework policies and the homework timetable for secondary students. In light of various concerns and requests from parents and students, we will be revising the timetable and clarifying expectations for the new quarter, effective when we get back in October. Parents and students, please expect a new homework timetable on Tuesday, 15 October, and new homework policies that week.
PSAT exams
The entire M5 class will be sitting PSAT exams on Wednesday, 15 October. These are precursors to university entrance exams (the SAT exams) given in the United States and elsewhere around the world, and are designed not only to begin the process of focusing students'minds on entering university, but also to give academic feedback to students and schools. The results should be very helpful to teachers in identifying areas in which students need additional instruction and practice, and also helpful to students and parents in identifying strengths and weaknesses and giving students information on how to improve their skills for preparation for entering university. Good luck to the M5 students, and don't forget to get a good night's sleep on Tuesday, 14 October!!

Primary News
Dear Parents,
As we head into the last 3 days for this quarter it is exciting to reflect upon the amazing amount of enthusiasm and celebration of learning that has occurred. This week the Student ouncil initiative of 'Spirit Week' enabled everyone to share their creativity in a fun and very non-threatening way. I would like to congratulate everyone for their cooperation, participation and imaginative ideas.
Literature Circles
We would like to thank our parent facilitators: Marie Von Alvensleben, Christine Graham, Miriam Keita, Anna Bruins and Ruth Kyatta for their commitment to working with a small group of P5/6 students each Thursday morning. During this time students took on roles such as: connector, discussion director, word wizard, illustrator and summarizer in order to continue developing their awareness and understanding of the seven key concepts. Throughout this programme students had an opportunity to practise self-management skills specifically time management, increase their knowledge, commit to working collaboratively in their group and reflect on the text they were assigned to read. Feedback from our parent facilitators will be used to implement yet another round of literature circles later in the school year.
Parent Workshop
On Tuesday 28th October (don't panic - this is next term!) we will be holding our first parent workshop titled: 'Reading through inquiry in the PYP'. During this workshop we will be exploring classroom literacy practices in action at ISM Arusha and learning about the process of actively and reflectively engaging students as problem-posers and problem-solvers while reading through the use of Language Labs and Literature Circles.
Share Time Assembly BONUS!
I would like to thank our secondary students, specifically M4 for a wonderful improvisation drumming demonstration, and M1 for their variation plays on a Zambian folk tale. Congratulations to our P1/2 and EC students for a wonderful presentation through singing and alliteration sentences. The P3/4 singing was superb! As we have so much to share we would like to invite you back next Wednesday at 11 am for our final end of quarter assembly where you will be able to view the P5/6 presentation of Romeo and Juliet or should I say Julio and Romiette!! as well as Swahili poems, French raps, Student council recycling announcement and singing from our choirs. This is a not-to-be-missed share time.
P3/4 Summative Assessment Task
Next Wednesday morning P3/4 parents are invited to share in their child's presentation of their 'Unique Bags'. I look forward to seeing you here from 9am onwards. Please feel free to stay for morning tea and our share time assembly.
House Athletics
Congratulations to all our students for a wonderful display of skill, risk taking and house spirit. I am sure all the parents who managed to make it; and sadly there were not that many (!!), enjoyed watching the EC children go through their obstacle course, P1/2 hurdles as well as all the track and field events not to mention the exciting parent races and tug of war! We are excited about our next house event coming soon!! Swimming!
