Secondary News
Dear Parents,
UN Day
The Secondary Student Council invites all students, teachers and parents to commemorate United Nations Day on Friday, 24 October, by dressing up in your national dress and/or wearing & displaying your national flag. Let's celebrate the many nations represented here at ISM!
Homework
Students have been given a new homework timetable which has been slightly revised. Teachers are trying to maintain reasonable levels of homework - enough for students to learn what they need to learn, but not so much that the students are feeling overloaded. Parents, you can help us out by monitoring your child's work at home and letting us know if they are being overloaded with work. These are the expectations we have for students regarding homework:
All secondary students are expected to:
  • Use your Homework Diary. Record assignments for each class every day, use the diary for planning your work each evening, get the diary signed by parents/guardians each weekend and have your Tutor sign it Monday morning.
  • Put in a concentrated time each afternoon/evening on homework. Time spent finding pencils, getting organized, staring out the window, chatting on the Internet, etc. is not to be counted.
  • Be accomplished by doing your best on assignments. Teachers may ask students to spend longer on assignments if the work does not reach the expected standard.
  • Keep balanced. If you have honestly spent (productively!) the time allotted for homework, but have not finished, you may stop and tell the teacher that it took you too long. (Get your parents to sign your homework diary.)
  • Plan how to avoid difficulties. Flimsy excuses ("I forgot") and technical difficulties ("the power went out") will not be acceptable. Printing must be done before class, students must figure out how to solve problems (such as lost or corrupted disks), backup copies of work should be kept on different computers, etc.
  • Be committed to complete and hand in assignments on time. Work not turned in on time will be given a score of 0 (zero). Late work may be accepted, but this will affect your effort grade and possibly the subject's assessment criteria (such as "attitudes"). Repeatedly late or missing assignments will result in parent conferences and other possible penalties.
M4 Art project - magazines needed
This week M4 has began a unit on expressing opinions through mixed media. This will involve collage and exploring the combination of images and text. We would be happy to receive your old magazines to use for this artwork and future projects. Thank you for your support.
Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) start next week
CCAs start on Monday, 27 October, and will run for 7 weeks until Wednesday, 10 December. Remember, all secondary students are expected to do one sport and one non-sport activity each quarter. If a student is doing some activities instead of organized CCAs (e.g. mother tongue classes, sports, arts, etc.), please send a note to the tutor explaining this.

Primary News
Dear Parents,
We are very excited about welcoming the following new students and their families to our ISM community:
  • Janeth Kibuta P5/6N
  • Mari Malmin EC
  • Mathilde Malmin EC
We would also like to welcome Maelle Dumont a volunteer from Belgium (staying with the Leclercq family) who will be supporting learning in the primary school 3 days per week. I apologize for not welcoming Daatih Willms who has also been volunteering in our primary classrooms 3 days per week. We are very fortunate to have their skills, time and commitment to supporting student learning.
What makes our school international?
What makes our school international? Is it an international body of students?:
Mari and Mathilde have arrived from Norway and Janeth has just got back from Pakistan, the teaching of one or more foreign" languages?, an exchange program?, dressing up for UN day tomorrow! For us fortunate to be apart of the ISM community it is all of the above and MORE!
Underpinning the notion of showing international-mindedness is our student learner profiles. These profiles reflect what we have embraced across our school as the 12 most important attributes of an international person. What do we want our students to learn? In essence we want our students to learn how to be inquirers, thinkers, communicators, knowledgeable, risk takers, principled, caring, open-minded, balanced, reflective, as well accomplished and committed. Every aspect of our curriculum focuses on moving students towards becoming people who reflect these characteristics. Through the PYP, MYP and Diploma Programme our students are traveling through a relevant, meaningful, challenging and significant international curriculum' which is recognized world-wide.

The IBO says: ‘Students in the 21st century are faced with the challenge of learning about an interconnected world where knowledge is constantly developing. The three IBO programmes prepare students to be active participants in a life long journey of learning'. (IBO 2007). Through discussion, reflection and the development of a common understanding of what being 'internationally minded' means to us, we will be able to continue achieving our school mission.
‘International School Moshi inspires individuals to be lifelong learners in a global community' (ISM Mission).
What do you think makes our school international?
Share Time Assembly
Tomorrow you are all invited to an extended Share Time Assembly hosted by our P5/6 students. You will be able to view their interpretations of Romeo and Juliet which is part of their summative assessment task for their just completed unit on Authors and Artists. As it is United Nations Day, our student councils are encouraging everyone to dress in either their national dress or their national colours. During our share time we will have a parade of nations, join in the spirit - Karibu! For a 1pm start!
Head Lice
Firstly I would like to thank those parents who are vigilant about checking their children's hair and informing us of the fact that their children have head lice. If, at any time your child has head lice, please ensure the successful treatment of his/her hair and sleeping environment before sending them back to school. Liceoma lotion can be purchased from Moonas Pharmacy at 3500Tsh per bottle of 60mls. Alternatively crush moth balls into a powder and mix with coconut oil and put on the head for a day. Making a habit of checking your child's hair will reduce the chances of head lice epidemics. "Lice love clean hair".
Co Curricular Activities
Co curricular activities for our students commence next Monday. Please ensure your children are wearing appropriate attire for their chosen activity.
ISMAC Playgroup
We are pleased to announce the opening of our ISMAC after-school PLAYGROUP. Parents are welcome bring their 'little ones'(under 4 years) to our Early Childhood play area each Thursday from 2.30 - 4.30. The Playgroup will be under the supervision of our very capable primary teaching assistants. As well as our EC play equipment for environmental play, other stations such as: sand play, water play and creative play will be set up for children to explore. Tea and coffee will be provided for adults and you are asked to bring a snack, drink, hat and change of clothes (in case needed) for your child.

Please note that this is not a ‘drop off'center but rather an opportunity for parents /. guardians to engage with their children in developmental play and to get to know other parents / guardians.

There is no charge for this playgroup and all families in our wider Arusha community are welcome and invited to attend.

Regards
Betty Brown
