The Annual General Meeting of the ISM Parent Association was held on Wednesday at KIA. Thank you to all the parents who were able to come and support this meeting. Congratulations to the PA for the fine work that they have achieved in the previous year and their ongoing work this year.A reminder that the PA International Day will be held in Moshi on Saturday, 21st February. Language Corner
We will be setting up a collection of books of various languages in the library. If you have novels in Hindi, magazines in Russian, books in Dutch, or anything readable in another language that you wish to donate, karibu. This will be a
resource for our very international school population.Lost and Found
We will be doing a big clearance of items in Lost and Found on Wednesday. So you have only a couple of days to claim that cherished t-shirt or hat.Car Park
A reminder to parents to drive slowly in the car park and ensure that children are safe before taking off. I have recently witnessed children sitting precariously on the back of vans which is extremely dangerous. A reminder also that no cars or
motorbikes are to be driven onto the field or elsewhere.Car stickers!
No sticker no entrance. Stickers are available from Loise at reception. This is important for security on campus.Grass
The grass on campus is growing quickly now with the warm weather and recent rains. Unfortunately our mower is under repair so the grounds do not look as tidy as we expect them to. Be assured they will return to their normally tidy state shortly.December Public Holidays
In order to assist families with planning for the upcoming public holidays, ISM will definitely celebrate Idd el Hajj on Monday, 8th December and will celebrate Independence Day on Tuesday, 9th December. Classes will therefore take place as usual on Friday, 5th December and will then resume at 8:00am on Wednesday, 10th December. These arrangements will not change even if later official government announcements indicate different days for national holidays.Dates to remember

yourselves, take risks and aiming high.Good news for parents & teens
A study by the MacArthur Foundation was just released, called "Living and Learning with New Media." In it, the study shows that while adults worry about teenagers wasting time online, and engaging in behaviours which may lead to dangers on the Internet, in actuality teenagers who engage in social networking and other online activities are learning New Media skills which may have real value to them in the future. The study didn't look at effects, so the results and the value are only speculative, but the study's author says that by "hanging out" online, teenagers are gaining "the technological skills and literacy they need to succeed in the contemporary world. They're learning how to get along with others, how to manage a public identity, how to create a home page." (I'm happy to send you the link if you want to read the entire study. I read about it on the International Herald Tribune newspaper's website: iht.com)Reports and Conferences
Secondary reports will be going home during the last week of the Semester, in December. We'll schedule some time for parents to meet with teachers at that time (and, of course, parents are welcome to talk with teachers at any time about student progress). We therefore will have classes as normal this coming Thursday when primary teachers have parent conferences.Regards John Iglar Head of Secondary Primary News
Dear Parents,Reflection & Celebration
Students are busily adding the final touches to their Portfolio which will be making its way home next Tuesday 25th November. Included in the portfolio you will find:An explanation about what is a Portfolio, What is a Parent Teacher Child Conference, What a Math and Language Rubric tells you as well as your child's Personal Social and Educational Report, 2 Unit of inquiry reports, Math Rubric, Language Rubric. Samples of teacher and student selected work that show the learning journey your child in on as well as their knowledge, skills and understandings in other curriculum areas. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to sit with your child and have them talk you through how they think they are going. Any questions you have, goals you and your child would like to reflect on or re set can be discussed at your Parent Teacher Child Conference on Thursday 27th November. The time of your appointment will be in the front pocket of your child's portfolio. We look forward to seeing you and your child at school next Thursday for your conference time. A reminder that there are no scheduled classes for this day. Share Time Assembly
I would like to congratulate the P3/4 students for sharing with us through role play their understanding about states of matter. After having reflected on their successful Science Fair last week it was great to see that the enthusiasm and
continuing to ‘wonder'is still there.Congratulations to our parent volunteers for sharing some of the non fiction books the children have been writing. Our students really see themselves as ‘authors'and you can view their work during the conference day. ISMAC Kids Corner
This year ISMAC will be facilitating the Kids Corner at the 2008 Arusha Christmas Fair. With the guidance and support of Michele Curley, Linda Willms, some secondary students and myself we will be making available a ‘passive'area for children to: construct using mobilo and duplo, draw, read, explore bubbles, create using plaster sine and play dough. This is a free activity in which students will receive community service hours for their supervising efforts. Some secondary students will have set times to share their talents in mask making, henna art and face painting, for this they will have a small fee to cover the cost of materials. Any money made will go towards the Okiswa School whom the students already support.Students have already signed up for the 5, 2 hour slots to assist in the supervision of children, and we are now asking if we have any parents who would also like to make themselves available to assist. Please contact Michele Curley at if you would like to be placed on the roster. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to share with our wider community a snippet of what makes ISMAC a truly ‘international'learning community. Polo Shirts
Our second order (well part of the second order!) has arrived. Please feel free to pop by reception and purchase the new colours and sizes on offer. We expect the other part of the order to be here early next week.Regards Betty Brown Head of Primary Attitude of the Week
