Arusha Campus News - 28th November 2008
Dear Parents,

TCNJ Students
In January we will have two interns from the College of New Jersey. They will be here from Monday, Jan. 12 and finishing on Friday, Feb. 27 (give or take a few days either side). They need accommodation. The students are both male. If you know of somewhere that they can rent short term or if can help in any way please let me know.
ABRSM Music Theory Exams
If your child would like to take music theory examinations (set by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) in March, they must register before December 15th. Music practical exams will be held in May and registration will take place in February. Registration information needs to be sent directly to me at .
Language Corner
We will be setting up a collection of books of various languages in the library. If you have novels in Hindi, magazines in Russian, books in Dutch, or anything readable in another language that you wish to donate, karibu. This will be a resource for our very international school population.
December Public Holidays
In order to assist families with planning for the upcoming public holidays, ISM will definitely celebrate Idd el Hajj on Monday, 8th December and will celebrate Independence Day on Tuesday, 9th December. Classes will therefore take place as usual on Friday, 5th December and will then resume at 8:00am on Wednesday, 10th December. These arrangements will not change even if later official government announcements indicate different days for national holidays.
Staff Kitchen
The support and ancillary staff kitchen will no longer be able to provide meals for students. Students affected are therefore asked from Monday to either use the school canteen or bring in their own lunches.
Cooking From the Heart
Thank you to Alli Remtulla for his famous Indian Kheer and Gillian Hoskin for her famous Scottish Shortbread which were enjoyed by a small and appreciated group of parents on Wednesday.

Remember cooking demonstrations are on Wednesday from 2.00 pm to 3:30 pm in the Early Childhood kitchen. Karibu to all parents who would like to learn the secrets of great recipes. Entrance is free. The next demonstration will be announced shortly.
Payment of Fees by Wire Transfer
If you arrange to pay the school by a wire transfer from another bank, your bank will probably charge you fees to send the money and our bank typically charges us a fee to receive the money. Hence the amount we actually receive net may be less than you have paid. To ensure that we receive the correct amounts could you please add sufficient funds for bank charges to any wire transfers that you make? The amounts charged by our banks are as follows:
  • Standard Chartered Bank in Tanzania - 1% of the amount transferred (minimum charge $10)
  • CitiBank in the USA - US$10
  • Bank of Ireland in the UK - GBP 6
Payments made over the counter at any branch of Standard Chartered, or payments made through the UK BACS system to Bank of Ireland do not incur any charges.

By providing a service for the children at the fair (and freeing up the parents!), they are showing themselves to be caring, considerate and willing to take on challenges. Primary News
Dear Parents,
Parent Teacher Child Conferences
Thank you to all our parents who joined their children in reflecting on accomplishments from the past semester and planned goals for the next. It was pleasing to see students confidently sharing their perspectives of how they have grown and how they plan to continue working towards the development of skills such as: independence, organization, time management, effective communication and problem solving.
Units of Inquiry: Did you know?
In EC the children will be focusing on being caring and knowledgeable as they get out into the community and see animals in different settings. They would like to go and see people who ride horses, people who milk cows, people who are interested in birds etc... If you know of anyone that would be able to assist or if you are interested in helping out with this unit of inquiry please feel free to contact Samantha or Ann Joyce.

Our P1/2 students, as part of their unit which looks at ‘who they are'will be explore family traditions and celebrations and have invited their parents into class on Monday 1 December from 8.10 - 9.00 to create a family board. Together they will prepare a poster about their family celebrations and traditions, such as birthdays, weddings, cultural or religious events. Many of us still have the family boards our children made when they were in P1/2. They are such a wonderful keepsake!

Similarly our P3/4 students as part of their unit ‘How we express ourselves'are using information they gather about: Where they call home, Ethnicity they associate with, Religions they participate in or observe to present collated data on bar graphs and pictographs. Students are looking forward to using Venn Diagrams to show similarities and differences between the different ethnic expressions in their classes.

Our P5/6 students were fortunate this week to have the skills of Ms. Louise Hill (Resident Arusha Artist) modeling and laying the foundations of water color painting in order for them create their own masterpieces. They discussed the different skills and techniques needed and used in order to inspire their own interpretations which they will start next Wednesday when Louise returns for her second lessons with the students. I would like to thank Louise for sharing her talent and expertise with our students.
‘ISMAC Kids Corner'
A reminder that ISMAC will be facilitating the Kids Corner at the 2008 Arusha Christmas Fair. With the guidance and support of Michele Curley, Linda Willms, some secondary students and myself we will be making available a ‘passive' area for children to: construct using mobilo and duplo, draw, read, explore bubbles, create using plaster sine and play dough. This is a free activity in which students will receive community service hours for their supervising efforts. Some secondary students will have set times to share their talents in mask making, henna art and face painting, for this they will have a small fee to cover the cost of materials. Any money raised will go towards the Okiswa School whom the students already support.
