Secondary News
Dear Parents,
Sports Weekend next week
Mr. Schofield is organizing a great trip to Moshi for our students for a busy and enjoyable weekend of sports and fun. Asanteni sana sana to Ms. Wood, Mr.Brown, Mrs. Curley and Mr. Schofield for chaperoning and helping to make sure the weekend goes smoothly. I hope all the athletes play hard and have fun!
Maths Challenge: Monday, 15 December
The M3 and M4 students from Moshi will travel to Arusha on Monday, 15 December to join our students for a variety of challenging and enjoyable Mathematics activities.
M3 Culminating Activity: 16-17 December
The M3 students will have a special two nights and two days culminating activity from 15-17 December. On Monday night, they will join the M3 students from Moshi in a special overnight bridge between the Maths Challenge and the Culminating Activity. They'll camp out at school and enjoy some camaraderie between them and the Moshi students. Then Tuesday and Wednesday will be the Culminating Activity with an overnight camping at a secret off-campus location.
M5 Personal Project Work Days: 15-16 December
In order to help our students prepare their best possible projects, we will set aside two days for the M5 students to finalize their Personal Projects. Monday and Tuesday, 15-16 December, will be work days for the M5 students. They may work off campus or on campus, as is appropriate and works best for each student and his/her project. They will return to school on Wednesday, 17 December, to present their projects to the M4 students and begin planning their Personal Statements.
M4 Personal Project Orientation: 16-17 December
The M4 students will receive an introduction and orientation to the Personal Project in school on Tuesday and Wednesday, 16-17 December. Mr. Brown and other teachers will give them information about what the Personal Project is, how to choose a project, and how to be successful in the project. The students will brainstorm some ideas and will compare their ideas with the M5 students, get advice from them, and see their projects. This will help them prepare for a long, challenging but very rewarding activity.
Reports and Parent Conferences
Full reports will go home with students on Thursday, 18 December. These are comprehensive reports with a great deal of information about the students'performance over the entire semester, from August to now. We will not be scheduling formal parent conferences, either now or when we get back in January. Any parents who wish to discuss the grades and/or comments may - as always! - contact the office and schedule a conference with myself or any teachers.
Wrapping Up
Friday, 19 December, is a half day and will be devoted to an inter-house swim gala. (Swimsuits other than Yellow, Green or Blue are acceptable but students should wear their house colours - Go, Meru, Mawenzi & Kibo!) We will not have an all-school assembly that day, but we are planning an assembly on Thursday. It will not be a formal "end of term" all-school assembly, but we will say goodbye to departing secondary students, and have some performances from secondary students. More details next week.
Assessment Week: 19-23 January
All students have received revision guides for the Assessment Week in January. M5 students will have a full week of formal examinations, with revision time set aside as well. M4 students will have formal written assessments, with regular classes as well. M1-M3 students will have some assessments that week. We have a progressive system of formal written assessments and examinations from M1-M5, designed to not only assess the students'knowledge and skills, but also to prepare them for the rigours of the Diploma programme. Parents, please help your students by asking them about their assessments, making sure they have their revision guides from their classes, and helping them set aside time and space to revise for the assessments. We've made sure students have their revision materials early so they can begin now and not have to devote all their time in the upcoming holidays to revision

Primary News
Dear Parents,
We would like to welcome the following families and students to our ISM community:-
Ben Bar Even in EC and Tom Bar Even in P1/2. Transitioning to a news school, especially when English is a second language can be an overwhelming experience. Therefore, I would like to congratulate our teachers and students for their empathy, support and guidance during this time.

We also welcomed the Nyiti family today who are excited about the possibility of starting in January: Charlie in P3/4M, Otis in P1/2D, Lulu in EC, Loretta in EC and Nyla in EC.
P1/2 Family Boards
I would like to thank all the families who joined the children on Monday morning to put together their own family boards. Throughout the week the students have presented their boards to the class showing skills in visual and verbal comprehension and interpretation. The passion and belonging they each feel for themselves and their families has highlighted the growing confidence they are continuing to develop. Congratulations all P1/2 students, Diana, Faraja and Rosemary for a wonderful morning.
P5/6 Landscape Watercolour Masterpieces
Art teaching requires a formalized structure that encourages students'artistic development. Skills and process are introduced in a systematic way with out reducing the opportunity for students to inquire into the creative process. In each of the P5/6 class you will be able to view the first set of watercolour pictures inspired by photographs students have bought in. With the guidance and expertise of Louise Hill the students have managed to enthusiastically move through this process in order to produce pieces of quality art works they are proud of.
Buddy Reading
Reading is constructing meaning from text by making inferences and interpretations. The process of reading is interactive and involves the reader's purpose for reading, the reader's prior knowledge and experience and the text itself. An ongoing part of our reading programme includes buddy reading where students share books with each other. This reading time is a valuable learning experience enjoyed by everyone.
Share Time Assembly
If you were at school this afternoon you will have seen a student council initiative of Polo Shirts being worn proudly by our students. Apparently Pink is the ‘in'colour for our boys and Mr. Mongardi! Congratulations to our P5/6 students for the sharing of their knowledge of landforms and landscapes through song "We rock but rocks rock harder" Amazing!

Coming Up! - Mark your calendars!
P3/4 Ethnic Expressions
On Thursday 18th December our P3/4 class will be participating in a ‘Culture Swap'which parents are invited to attend. Following this they will share food from their home countries in the performance area. You will then get to hear again the new song written by Mr. Mongardi's class titled "Ethnic Expressions".
Swimming Gala
This is a reminder that we will be holding our house Swimming Gala on Friday 19th December. On Monday students will be signing up for their events, when this is finalized we will be sending home a schedule of events so that you know the programme for the day. The swim gala will conclude with a short assembly in the pool area.
Attitude of the week: INDEPENDENCE
Thinking and acting independently, making their own judgments based on reasoned argument, and being able to defend their judgments.

Regards
Betty Brown
Head of Primary
