Arusha Campus News - 23rd January 2009
Dear Parents,

ISA Tests
In the first week of February we will be administering ISA [International Schools Assessment] tests to students in the P5, M1 and M3 classes on both campuses. These standardised tests are intended to help us measure our students and our teaching programmes against those of other international schools. Students are not expected to prepare for the tests in any way and we intend to make the process as simple as possible for them. If you would like to read more about the tests that we took in 2008, please go to www.ismoshi.org/isaacer.htm.
ABRSM Theory Examination
A reminder that the ABRSM Theory Examination is on Thursday, 5th March.
Registration for this examination is now closed.
Secondary Production: Dira/Heartbeat
Ms. Gorman is hard at work organizing our secondary students in their singing and dancing for Dira/Heartbeat, which will be staged on Friday, 27 February and Saturday, 28 February. She has sent information home about rehearsals, and we hope that all parents are able to organize car pools or other transport arrangements for the Friday after school rehearsals. A reminder:
Friday, 30 January (next Friday) - only students in HipHop, Bollywood and Percussion pieces (same students as perform on Wednesdays)
The following 3 Fridays (6, 13 and 20 February) - all students are expected to remain for a 2:00-3:30 rehearsal of the full production.

Students are asked to dress all in black (t-shirt & trousers & shoes) & tech crew (costumes, sound, lighting, etc.) will be needed, too.

Secondary News

Well done!
Good job to all the students during Assessment Week. It's a heavy week, but very important for teachers to be able to assess student performance and to give students both the experience of a rigorous assessment process and feedback as to their strengths and weaknesses.
Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs)
CCAs for the 3rd quarter will begin on Monday. A list of activities and the students who'd signed up for each is being sent home by email. NOTE: Apparently a stack of M1 student choice slips has been mislaid, so Mr. Schofield asks all M1 students to report to the activity they signed up for, even if they're not on the list.
M4 Class trip
The M4 class had been scheduled to go on a class trip to Babati/Kolo the week after next. Unfortunately, we have had to postpone the trip. Due to both a surprise drastic increase in costs and medical reasons preventing our Art teacher from going on the trip, we have decided it best not to take this trip at this time. We have spoken with the students and given reassurance that either this trip or an alternative will go through - we have enough time remaining in the year to make sure that we can schedule an alternative, unlike last year!
M1 Class Trip: Changes (Lakes Manyara and Eyasi)
Ms. Wood is busy planning and organizing the M1 trip, scheduled for the week of 9-13 February. Details will go home next week.
Personal Project information evening for M4 students and parents
Steve Brown will present information about the Personal Project for M4 parents and students on Tuesday, 27 January at 5:30 p.m. Other interested parents are welcome!

Primary News

Dear Parents,
Parent Workshop
  • What are the essential elements of the PYP?
  • What does PYP mean?
  • How does the PYP cater for the needs of my child?
If you have questions marks in your head about these questions the following workshop is for you! Our goal will be to share this information with you in a relevant, significant and meaningful way and to ensure you enjoy the learning experience. Come along and see how we do!

M5 Design Technology
We would like to thank our M5 students for sharing their Design Technology games with us this week. Our students were amazed at the designs, electronics, questions and appropriateness to their age groups of these interactive games. "We wonder how Peter Bruins boxed machine knew the answer to our math questions" said P3/4M
"We wonder how Anne Peterson got the lights to work if you got the right answer" said P3/4H
"This is a fun math game!" said a group of P5/6N students as they worked with Arti
Share Time Assembly
Please join us to celebrate the learning that has been happening in the classrooms next Friday. This assembly will be hosted by our P5/6 students. You will also hear some singing by our P3/4 Choir.
Routine Reminders
PE skills this term return to large and small ball handling, practising skills such as: kicking, dribbling, striking, passing, defending etc. in order to participate in round robin team games during sport.
Swimming will be held only during swimming lessons this semester.
Hats and drink bottles are an essential part of the school day and parents are reminded to ensure that these items are clearly labeled.
Snacks and Lunches can be ordered and / or purchased from the canteen.
Families are reminded to fill lunch boxes with healthy, fresh, nutritious food items.
Tree Climbing Students are aware that the student council have made a decision that the climbing of trees on school property during school hours is not allowed. Whilst the climbing of trees is fun, it can incur accidents. AND! the mapera's don't get a chance to ripen!
Classes commence at 8.00am. Students feel uncomfortable entering class when it has already started. Parent assistance with ensuring students are at school on time is appreciated.
Essential Elements for each week
When learning about and through the subject areas, students acquire the particular skills that define the discipline of those subjects. For example, in language the students become literate, and in mathematics they become numerate. The acquisition of literacy and numeracy, in its broadest sense, is essential, as these skills provide students with the tools of inquiry. Nonetheless, the PYP positions is that, in order to conduct purposeful inquiry and in order to be well prepared for lifelong learning, students need to master a whole range of skills beyond those normally referred to as basic. These skills are called trans disciplinary skills and are incorporated throughout each of our units of inquiry. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing some of these skills with you. I am wondering if you can think of learning your child has been involved in so far that incorporates these skills?
Trans disciplinary Skill of the week: 'Thinking Skills'
Acquisition of knowledge: Gaining specific facts, ideas, vocabulary, remembering in a similar form.
Comprehension: Grasping meaning from material learned and communicating and interpreting learning.
Application: Making use of previously acquired knowledge in a practical or new way.
Metacognition: Analyzing one's own and others' thought processes: thinking about how one thinks and how one learns.

Warm Regards
Betty Brown
Head of Primary
