|
Dear Parents, Dira/Heartbeat
As I sit here putting together this newsletter the sounds of 'New York New York' resonant throughout the school. This heralds the rehearsals for the secondary school production aptly named Dira or heatbeat. The production which is a celebration of dance, rhythm and song from around the world, will be staged Friday, 27 February, and Saturday, 28 February, on campus.Leebeth Armon
Yesterday, Thursday 5th February, the ISM community remembered the anniversary of the passing of Leebeth Armon with a small ceremony at the garden that she and her students created. A Neem tree was planted in her memory. The Neem tree is well known in Africa as an important healing tree. It is known as 'Mwarubaini' in Kiswahili, meaning reliever of 40 disorders. It is said that products made from neem have proven medicinal properties, being anthelmintic, antifungal, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fertility, and sedative. Interestingly, All parts of the tree (seeds, leaves, flowers and bark) are used for preparing many different medical preparations. Much of the school attended the tree planting and Leebeth is sadly missed by all the teachers, the students and the whole community. School Email
We recently have had some problems with the school email service and there have been several emails not getting through. We believe we have this problem fixed now but if you have not received a response to a recent email it may be because it has not gone through.Maulid Holiday
The Maulid holiday is provisionally scheduled early in March but the date of the national holiday is dependant upon the sighting of the moon. In ISM we have decided to celebrate Maulid on Monday, 9th March. This means that there will be no classes on Monday, 9th March, but there will be classes as usual on Tuesday, 10th March and on other days that week, irrespective of when the national holiday is declared.New Director Search
Applications for the position of Director of ISM are now in and the Board Search Committee consisting of Board members, parents and teachers will now take the next step to reduce the list of applicants to a short list for interview here in Moshi/Arusha. The interviews are expected to be held in late February.Fees
You are reminded that for most parents who are paying fees by installments, the third term fees were due by 1st February. Please ensure that these are received by the school on time as our accounts office has been instructed to surcharge late payments.PYP Workshop
Last week there was a successful workshop to introduce new and exiting parents to the PYP. There was a large turnout and so we will repeat the workshop next Friday, 13th February at 12.45 pm. We have advertised this is in the wider community and we hope to have many non ISM parents attend to learn more about the PYP programme.Introductory Primary Years Programme Workshop

Safari njema to the M1 students and their chaperones!Valentine's Day Formal Dance - Friday, 13 February
The Secondary Student Council has joined forces with the Primary Student Council to organize a Valentine's Day dance next Friday, 13 February. The primary dance will run from 6p.m. to 8p.m. and the secondary dance will run from 8p.m. to 11p.m. The secondary students want this to be a formal dance - they're asking students to dress up for the event, and they're planning decorations and refreshments to make the Performance Area a special setting for the dance. Entrance fee will be 1,000TShs and refreshments and flowers will be for sale.Personal Projects: Statements from M5 students & ideas from M4 students
The M5 students have completed the first draft of their written statement about their Personal Projects. They will be revising these pieces over the course of the month, completing them by 27 February. The written piece is an important part of the whole project, as is appropriate for a project that leads to the extended essay of the IB Diploma. In March, the M5 students will be making formal presentations of their projects and their written work in both Moshi and Arusha. This will be the culmination of a busy, challenging but hopefully very rewarding and satisfying year's work for them. Meanwhile, the M4 students are narrowing their ideas down for their own projects, and are beginning to look forward to this exciting and interesting project. Good luck to the M4 students! Dira/Heartbeat - rehearsals and performance dates
The school is rocking to the beat every Wednesday and Friday afternoon as rehearsals are underway for Dira: Heartbeat - Ya Piga Ya Moyu.Remember, that all cast members and tech crew are expected to arrange transportation for Friday afternoon rehearsals, 2:00-3:30, from now until the performance. Wear your black clothes, please! The choices we make and the repercussions we face
There have been a few recent news items that have been eye-openers for some of our students. In discussing them, we've been able to talk about and learn about what it means to be principled and responsible. It may be useful for parents to talk about these issues with your children.First is the story of Michael Phelps. This very talented and accomplished athlete, in his own free time when he was not training, was seen using marijuana. As a result, he has been seriously embarrassed, forced to publicly apologize, suspended from competitions, and has lost income from endorsement contracts. His story is a reminder to all of us that any poor choices we make can have very serious repercussions. Second is the case of Avery Doninger, a high school student in the United States. She was disciplined by her school (she was not allowed to serve as class secretary or speak at her graduation) because on an internet blog she wrote insulting things about school officials and urged students to complain. She sued the school district, but several courts have ruled against her and supported the school's actions. Besides the immediate consequences (school disciplinary action) to her vulgar and inflammatory online posting, it has been commented on that she has now become somewhat famous on the internet for her posting and for taking this issue to court. It remains to be seen whether or not she will find it difficult to find a university or employer who will overlook the incident. (There are many cases where students have had university acceptances revoked and police officers and others have lost their jobs after posting inappropriate and embarrassing pictures and writings on online blogs, websites or social networking sites such as Facebook or MySpace.) Both of these cases highlight to our students the need to make good choices and be very cautious of how they present themselves in public and online. Things they do now - whether illegal or inappropriate - may cause them difficulties for some time. Regards John Iglar Head of Secondary Primary NewsDear Parents,100th Day Celebrations
In all P1,2,3,4 classes; students celebrated the 100th day of school in a variety of ways. Students: collected 10 groups of the same item - grains of rice, hairclips, marbles, stones..They made necklaces with 100 cheerio cereal crunchies, threaded 100 pieces of pasta.P3/4M estimated how long it would take them to run from their classroom to the water tower 100 times then proceeded to keep a tally of their class relay run incorporating math skills in number, data gathering & statistics, practical measurement and problem solving. WOW! This is what they found out:
P1/2 Umoja Field Trip
We would like to thank our parent helpers who joined the field trip with our students to Umoja. Tianna told stories that the students described as: Sharing this experience with our Moshi counterparts meant that follow up work yesterday afternoon and this morning was meaningful and enjoyed by all the students. Our Moshi students and their teachers Narelle Norman and David Holt enjoyed sleeping over in our classrooms with their students and we all look forward to more cross campus interchanges.P3/4 Forest Field Trip
Next Tuesday 10th February our P3/4 students will venture off to the Sokoine University Forest Training institute located up from Ngara Mtoni. During this field trip the students will be able to identify the origin of a primary resource, see the main part of the process of change from primary resource to product as well as enjoy a day in the cool air of Mt Meru. This trip will help consolidate learning from books in the classroom and give the students a more hands on understanding and knowledge of how products used in daily life are the end result of a long process beginning with resources originating from the earth.ENJOY!
