Arusha Campus News - 13th February 2009
Dear Parents,

Dira/Heartbeat
The rehearsals for Dia continued and an extensive schedule of practices continue over the next two weeks. The production which is a celebration of dance, rhythm and song from around the world, will be staged Friday, 27 February, and Saturday, 28 February, on campus.
New Director Search
A short list of applicants has been decided by the Search Committee for the position of Director of ISM. Candidates will arrive in the week beginning February 23rd for an extensive schedule of interviews. A town hall type meeting for Arusha parents will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, 24th February. This will be an opportunity for parents to be introduced to the candidates for the Director position. More details are to follow.
Maulid Holiday
A reminder that the Maulid holiday will be celebrated on Monday, 9th March. This means that there will be no classes on Monday, 9th March, but there will be classes as usual on Tuesday, 10th March and on other days that week, irrespective of when the national holiday is declared.
Security
Please remember to display the ISM sticker on your dashboard. This will ensure that the Ultimate security guards will let you pass though to the car park. New visitors to the campus are required to sign in at the guard house and report to administration.
Car park
Please drive slowly in the car park. There are children crossing and cars backing out and we do not want an accident. Please be very careful. We want our children and ourselves to be safe.
Pool Parties
We have a lot of interest in holding birthday parties at the pool. However, please contact me well in advance if you wish to make a booking. Please note that all children are to be accompanied by adults at all times. There should be sufficient adult supervision of the children and ISM cannot be held responsible for these parties. The school also cannot be held responsible for valuables left in the changing rooms and around the pool area. All cars must be left in the car park and not parked outside the pool area.

Primary News

Dear Parents,
Thank you for keeping connected
Early Childhood
Thank you to all our parents who attended our informal yet informative Early Childhood discussion coffee morning on Wednesday this week. Points of interest are as follows:
  • Students are immersed in an English / Swahili language programme
  • The cut off number for students in this class is 20 students to 3 adults.
  • Differentiation happens in many ways in and outside the classroom
  • An information package re; Head lice will be coordinated and sent home in next weeks primary news.
  • Students who stay in the afternoon program participate in 'project' activities
I would like to thank Mrs. Samantha Mongardi for clarifying and sharing the learning experiences our EC students participate in.
P3/4
Thank you to our parent helpers: Mrs. Madeleine Oosterhuis, Mrs. Saskia Rechsteiner, Mr. Gary Strand and Mrs. Dina Matthews who accompanied our P3/4 classes to the Sokoine University of Agriculture on Tuesday. The students were able to see 'first hand' the procedure used to change a primary resource into a product. Much fun was had running through the forest!
P5/6
Thank you to our P5/6 parents who attended the P5/6 EOTC (Education outside the classroom) briefing on Thursday afternoon. Important points to note are as follows:
  • The trip leaves on Monday 23rd Feb and returning on Wednesday 25th Feb
  • The students will travel to Magara and sleep in tents
  • The students will interview 3 different tribes
  • The students will climb the escarpment
  • The students need to pay close attention to the packing list so that they have everything they need.
If you have any further questions about this trip please feel free to contact either Natalie, Lloyd or myself;
Primary Students
Thank you to our P3/4 students for hosting share time today. The P3/4H & K version of Cinderella - Cinder Edna entertained us all. Congratulations to all the students for sharing the 'Writing Process' with the parents before hand. If you did not get an opportunity to read some of the wonderful stories that are on their way to being published, please feel free to pop into any one of the P3/4 classes and have a read.
Point of interest!
Sunraj played the role of grandad in the play performed by P3/4M. Sunraj said that John Henry was a special kind person because he always used to help people. The profiles that best describe John Henry are caring, risk taker, inquirer and principled.

What do you know about John Henry now that you learned from our share time assembly?
Parents
I would like to thank the parents who joined me this afternoon for a re run of the PYP Introductory workshop. Identifying what the ISM / IBO philosophy, mission statement, curriculum framework and essential elements of the programme are, helped many new parents to the program understand our teaching and learning practices. Knowing and understanding the importance of the 'Learner Profile' (caring, open minded, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, balanced, accomplished, committed, thinkers) will ensure we continue to foster qualities in students that inspire them to be lifelong learners in a global community.

Our next parent workshop will be on Friday 6th March at 12.30pm and will be about 'Student Led Celebrations'. I look forward to seeing you at this workshop.
IBO PYP workshop
Next Wednesday I will be travelling to Lusaka to lead a PYP workshop at the American International School of Lusaka. Whilst working with the 34 registered participants from the Africa / Middle East region, I will be reflecting on current practices here at ISMAC identifying 'best practices' and areas that can be enhanced. I look forward to making connections with other IBO PYP schools in order to set up links between both our teachers and students in order foster interschool exchanges of knowledge, skills, culture and community involvement. This will hopefully open more windows of opportunities for us as international, global learners.
Curriculum Corner - Communication Skills
Viewing: Interpreting and analysing visuals and multimedia; understanding the ways in which images and language interact to convey ideas, values and beliefs; making informed choices about personal viewing experiences.

Presenting: Constructing visuals and multimedia for a range of purposes and audiences; communicating information and ideas through a variety of visual media; using appropriate technology for effective presentation and representation.

Non-verbal; Recognizing the meaning of visual and kinaesthetic communication; recognizing and creating signs; interpreting and utilizing symbols.
From the Rugby Pitch
Over the weekend the Arusha Rhinos Rugby Club hosted a touch rugby tournament. Our school entered 3 teams in the competition; Under 14, Under 19 and Open (Adults) team. The under 19 team decided not to enter as there were no other school teams entered in their age bracket for them to compete against. Instead the older more experienced players joined in with some of the adult teams.

The Under 14 team played very well in games against 3 other teams all of whom had older students playing for them. It was good to see the team playing the game correctly and not becoming frustrated by the opposition teams' lack of understanding of the game.

The ISM adult's team consisted of mostly staff members; played in a competitive open adult's competition against teams many of who regularly play rugby for the club. The staff team came through the pool matches and semi-finals undefeated before losing a close battle in the final.

The teachers and students enjoyed the support of many parents and friends of the school during the day of competition and on into the evening where the staff band 'SLAM' donated their time entertaining the crowd into the evening with some Blues and R&B classics.

As ISM participating teams in this first Touch Rugby Tournament we would like to thank the organizers, sponsors, players, supporters and each member of our teams for a memorable afternoon of tiring yet enjoyable community sport.
