International School Moshi Arusha Campus News - 6th March 2009 |
|
Dear Parents, On the small chance that you read no further than the first sentence of this newsletter, I want to remind all families that you are most welcome to join the entire ISM community on Saturday, March 14th on Moshi Campus for ISM's International Day. This event, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to around 3:00 p.m. is a celebration of our many cultures and a good opportunity to reconnect with families on either campus who you often do not get time to see. It will be held by the pool, so everyone should bring their swimming costumes to cool off after sampling some of the international cuisine on offer and listening to the many music and dance performances that are scheduled. If you would like to join a country table and provide a sample of food from your culture, please contact Mrs. Pauline Martin at Pauline is a Moshi representative on the Parents' Association and she is helping to organize the food tables along with Mama Somaiya and Ms. Rosi. She has also organized the TPC men to sing the Mauritian national anthem at the event. In the past few years I have heard several members of our community express opinions about getting over past differences and trying to work together as one school. The school works hard to put on one-school class and OP trips for the students and host one-school sporting events and the students and teachers really enjoy it. Once a year, beyond IB graduation, we also try to bring our families together. So parents, here is your chance to walk the talk. I look forward to seeing you on the 14th and to demonstrating the famous Canadian dog paddle. Soccer 7s in Moshi
All parents are encouraged to watch some excellent boys and girls soccer action this Saturday on Moshi campus. The pitches have been groomed to such a high degree that the TPC greens keeper would blush to see them. ISM will field several teams and several local schools are participating in this very fast-paced event. It starts early in the morning, so bring your lawn chair, coffee thermos and a camera to the playing fields of Moshi and cheer on our team. Many thanks to Ben Wiggins for organizing this excellent annual sporting event that opens up ISM to the local community for the world's second most popular sport after ice hockey.Kilimanjaro Marathon
Amazing! -- that about sums up the ISM effort at the Kilimanjaro Marathon last Sunday. 1,500 people ran the 5.8km Fun Run; 1,000 ran the half; and 500 ran the full marathon. After the event, ISM runners were treated to juice and pancakes at the ISM tent. When all the pledges are collected, we expect to have raised around $ 5,000 for the ISM Tanzanian scholarship fund! Thank you again to Kate Robertson, Charles Schofield and Chris Dawson for organizing Team ISM and for sorting out the scholarship fundraising. Several parents ran were seen on the course - far too many to mention, with of course a few exceptions. Aline Knops ran the full marathon and did not even seem winded upon arrival at the stadium. Well done. At the other end of the spectrum, Marcello Mongardi ran a valiant first run and we were eventually able to revive him. It has been inspiring to see him limp around Arusha Campus this week. Equally impressive were the many ISM Tanzanian support and ancillary staff who participated this year and put in very strong performances. If your child was sponsored to run on the day, please encourage them to get their money and pledge sheets in to Kate Robertson by Tuesday.Director Search
Patience is a virtue. We should know by Tuesday if the candidate the Board has offered the Directorship to will accept this challenging and rewarding position. Stay tuned!World Math Day
Thank you to everyone who participated in Word Math Day. When the results are in, you will read about them here.Dira: Heartbeat - Ya Piga Ya Moyu
Many thanks to the secondary students on Arusha Campus and Ms. Andrena Gorman for staging their very entertaining production of Dira/Heartbeat last weekend on Arusha Campus. This was a big effort which drew appreciative audiences from both Arusha and Moshi.MYP Personal Project Presentations
Our tenacious M5 classes are presenting their Personal Projects today on Moshi Campus. The Arusha M5s are joining to listen and then they will stay over in Kishari House to celebrate with their classmates the culmination of this important part of the MYP. On Saturday they will rise to join the Soccer 7s. I want to thank our inaugural MYP class and their coordinators, Steve Brown and Jeff Holcomb, for successfully making this historical journey at ISM = remember, this is our first class ever to do the full MYP = they all started way back in S1 in 2004! There are still several aspects of the program left to enjoy, but congratulations on getting to this important milestone. The Arusha M5s present their personal projects in Thank you to the many parents who have learned the MYP along with your children the school.New M4 Trip to West Kilimanjaro
The M4 Class Trip has been rescheduled for the first week in June. The trip will involve Geography fieldwork with farm visits that will focus upon studies of rivers, climate and altitude. More details regarding which teachers from each campus will be supervising the trip and preparations will be forthcoming from the MYP Coordinators on each campus.Variety Show
The annual Moshi Variety show takes place in K-Hall Friday evening March 13th. There will be several musical and dance numbers performed by our Moshi students and staff on the new K-Hall stage. This is always an entertaining evening and I hope you can plan to attend.International Day
One more time! The Parents Association, in coordination with Ms. Rosi, Mr. Lee and Mr. White, will be organizing a whole school International Day on Moshi Campus on Saturday, March 14th. This is a whole school event to celebrate the many cultures represented at ISM through food, fun and song. Tables with food representative of our many cultures will be posted near the pool and a small stage will be set up for cultural performances. Parents will want to arrive early to catch the rendition of "Oh Canada" by Mr & Mrs Sutherland. This dynamic duo has also added the popular Canadian song, "Rule Britannia" to their playlist - but parents will need to request that on the day. We are hoping that all our ISM families who are available will come over to Moshi for the day. Watch for more details in next week's newsletter.Scholarship Students for 2009/10
The Tanzanian national form four examination results were published a couple of weeks ago and we have started our search for the two students who will join the D1 class in August with a full tuition and boarding scholarship. We are seeking students with demonstrated academic excellence and a record of active involvement in co-curricular and/or community service activities. If you know of any suitable Tanzanian student, please encourage them to apply. Further details are given at www.ismoshi.org/scholarship.htm with a closing date for applications of 8th March.Maulid
There will be no classes on Monday, March 9th as we celebrate Maulid. Classes will resume on Tuesday, 10th March. There will be a programme of activities for the boarders over the weekend and on the public holiday as usual.New Teachers for 09/10
Those of you who keep track of our teacher vacancies will already know we have made a couple more appointments this week and that our list of openings is steadily shrinking. We have some excellent teachers joining ISM next year and I have written asking them to send a brief biography and photo that we can share with parents by the end of the term.Who's on First?
Mr. White and Mr. Moody return this weekend from their accreditation visit for CIS to a school in Cameroon. Rest assured, I have left them many problems to solve. Now it is my turn to volunteer. I have been asked by the Council of International Schools (CIS) to travel to Zambia next week to conduct an accreditation visit of an international school there. So, Mr. White and Mr. Moody will be back in the saddle on Tuesday while I am working in the south. I'll be back for International Day on Saturday March 14th and looking forward to seeing many of our families by the pool in Moshi.Have a great weekend! | Available on the web...
