Arusha Campus News - 24th April 2009
Dear Parents,

Contact and Emergency Numbers
This is very important. If you change your phone number please inform Loise if you have a new telephone number or new emergency number. If your children are sick and need to go home or if there is an accident we need to be able to reach you or your emergency contact. We have had several situations lately where parents have not been able to be contacted.
M4 Work Experience Showcase
You are cordially invited to attend the 2009 M4 Work Experience Showcase taking place on Thursday April 30th from 1:00 - 2:30 pm in the performance area of ISM Arusha. The M4 class will be sharing their work experience portfolios and offering advice to younger classes about how to plan for, secure and carry out a successful placement.
Charles Schofield
Work Experience Co-ordinator
Student Activities
Please find attached a copy of the students in activities list for this quarter. Note that the following activities are full: Monday - Bead making and chess club. Wednesday - Cooking for kids and Dirty hands to make a difference. Please contact Charles with any omissions. Activities start Monday!!
Pool
I have fingers crossed that the long awaited expected part will arrive today which will mean the cleaning pump with be operational tomorrow and the pool will again be open on Monday. I have also touched wood and thrown salt over my shoulder.
New Director
Our new Director for next year, Bob Woods, will be visiting ISM during the week of May 4th through the 8th. He will visit both campuses.
Fees next Year
We are currently in the process of preparing invoices for the next academic year. You may pay tuition either in one complete payment for the whole school year which must be received before 1st July 2009, or in four installments. If you wish to make payment by installments please notify Lucas in accounts. Please note that on Arusha Campus, kindergarten children have the option of staying for lunch and an extended school day at an additional fee of $1000 per annum.
Notice of Withdrawal
I am repeating this message because it is important that all parents be aware that they are responsible for providing 30 school days' (excluding weekends and school holidays) written notice of withdrawal of a child from school, in lieu of which they are liable to pay a half term's fees. Therefore, if you are intending not to return next academic year please let me know in plenty of time with written notice.
Lost and Found
I would encourage parents to label children's clothing as we have some very nice things sitting in lost and found. Please check this area regularly. It is always at the front at reception.
IB Diploma Examinations
The IB Diploma examinations begin shortly. I would like to wish all our ISM students success during this very demanding time. I would like to also remind parents that the D2 Graduation is on Saturday, May 23. The M5 ceremonies are on Tuesday, June 16. In Arusha this will be at 10 am.
ABRSM Practical Exams
We have been advised that these are likely to take place in the week beginning 16th May 2009. Further details are yet to be confirmed however the exams will take place in Moshi. The school will provide transport to Moshi for Arusha students taking the examination.
Dira Heartbeat
The DVD of Dira Heartbeat ISM Production will be on sale from Tuesday next week at a cost of 10,000/=.

Secondary News

Dear Parents,
M3 Field Study Trip
There were tired smiles all around when the M3 students returned to ISM yesterday afternoon. Students and teachers all agreed that the trip, a new one based on the Arts and the environment, was an enjoyable and valuable experience. Thanks and well done to Ms. Romero and Ms. Gorman for organizing this new trip. Welcome back to all the students; glad the trip was enjoyable and educational!
M4 Work Experience
The students have been enjoying the pleasures of work - early rising, late hours, increased responsibilities. After visiting them, Mr. Schofield reports that they are having a worthwhile and productive week. Well done to all the students - no doubt you'll be glad to be back in school next week!
M1/M2 Maths Challenge
Ms. Wood and Ms. MacRae will be taking the M1 and M2 students to Moshi on Wednesday (29 April) for a Maths Challenge! The students will join up with the Moshi students for a day of challenging, exciting and fun Mathematics.
Co-Curricular Activities
CCAs start again on Monday (27 April). Activities will run through Wed, 3 June. Remember that we ask all secondary students to participate in one sport and one creative activity each term.
End of Year Assessments: Revising and Preparing
Students have been given revision guides by subject teachers for their end-ofyear assessments. Assessment week will be the last week in May, 25-29 May. All secondary students will have assessments during that week in English, Language B (French & Swahili), Maths, Science, Humanities and PE. There may also be project work assigned during that week by other subjects. Assessments are designed to fit the MYP assessment criteria, and will vary in type as subjects require: some will be tests, others will be various types of projects. The scope and difficulty of the assessments will vary by grade level - increasing as students get older. All students are being given an overall guide to plan for the assessments and how to study in their tutorial session on Monday. I invite all parents to read through the revision guide and help your students prepare for these assessments. The purpose of assessment week is to help the students become more knowledgeable and accomplished in their subjects, and to prepare them for the types of examinations they will receive in the Diploma programme.

Primary News

Dear Parents,
Share Time Assembly
Thank you to all our parents who came to celebrate and share in our students learning this week. Each share time assembly provides the students with an opportunity to practice speaking with clarity and presenting with growing confidence their knowledge and understanding to an audience.
P1/2 - Ocean Wax Museum
The P1/2 students welcome their parents and friends to come and celebrate their learning about ocean creatures on Thursday 30 May at 1.30pm. You will also find out how we can take action in order to save creatures which are threatened in a responsible way. Karibu Sana!
P3/4 - People who change the world
Our students have enjoyed using research skills of: planning, collecting, recording, organizing and interpreting data to present their research findings in the form of a poster or booklet about a famous person who has changed the world. Classes will be sharing their final pieces along with "Who am I" poems next week. You will have had a sneak preview at today's share time assembly when P3/4 Kara shared some of their work.
P5 - Who am I to Judge
Whilst looking into how peoples beliefs and values influence the way they live and interact with others, our P5 students have explored many possible causes of prejudice. They discussed and shared their understandings of the impact of racism, prejudice, discrimination and segregation. This week they were fortunate to have Paula Gremley from Mwangaza (A beacon of hope) into school to talk to the students about her work with handicapped and disabled children in Tanzania. The students really enjoyed having their topical questions answered.
P6 - Growing Pains
Discovering how our bodies change throughout our lifetimes has been met with much maturity as our P6 student's research and share their understanding and knowledge about different body systems and each persons unique development. Full sized body representations can be seen in Mr. Curley's classroom.

Warm Regards
