Leaving Teachers
Some teachers will be leaving ISM this at the end of this school year on 17th June and we thank them all for the huge amount they have contributed to the school and wish them all the very best for the future.
  • Michele and Lloyd Curley have been with ISM for four years. Michele has made a great contribution to the French programme and been a great asset to the secondary programme and Community and Service. Lloyd will be sorely missed in the Primary programme and we thank him for his work also with sports and the OP trips. We wish them the very best in their new adventure in Bangladesh.
  • John and Helen Iglar joined us two years ago. Helen has given much to the primary school and the children and parents have appreciated her work and dedication. John has done a superb job in leading the secondary school and all the teachers and students have benefited from his experience and dedication. He has improved student learning across the board as well as teaching mathematics and IT. We wish them all the best in Addis.
  • Leigh MacRae has been with ISM one year but has made a significant difference to the humanities programme. She has made a great contribution to ISM both inside and outside the classroom. We wish her the best in Canada.
  • Andrena Gorman has been at ISM for the last two years and has worked at developing the music programme. We will not forget her contribution to the arts at ISM and fondly remember her work in the primary and secondary school productions. We wish her the very best for her return to Australia.

Primary News

Dear Parents,
P1/2 Day Camp to Olasiti
The buzz and excitement that came from the P1/2 class on Wednesday morning was rousing. Once gain we would like to thank the Peterson Family 'Dorobo' for allowing us to use their well equiped camping facility in Olasiti. Putting up tents, walking in the bush, sharing lunch and enjoying the day was highlighted by the visit of the resident Olasiti Zebra!. The reflective writing by the students of their field study is evidence that a great time was had by all. We would like to thank those parents who were able to provide transport for this wonderful day out.
P3/4 Visitor and Visit to the Arusha Urban Water Authority
This week the students enjoyed a visit by Professor Eli who has developed the bone filter water purifier that we use at school and that many families use in their homes. We thank Eli for his informative and knowledgeable talk with the students. After the talk many of the students were able to make connections between different water sources and form in depth opinions about the amount of flouride in the water, the consequences of this and what they can do about it. At the Arusha Urban Water Authority students learned a lot about our water supply. Specifically some students said that "chlorine is used to kill bacteria" and that "Arusha water goes through a number of different filter systems". The reflections students have written in classrooms is evidence that the students are continuing to develop a very broad vocabulary base from which to write informative reports. After creating their own physical water cycle displays, the students are now enjoying making their own water filters in class.
PYP Exhibition Thank you
Today at our last Primary Share Time the P6 students were had the opportunity to thank their Mentors. They expressed their appreciation for the support and guidance they received and how their menotor support helped keep them focussed and on task. Thank you PYP Exhibition Montors!
Parent Teacher Student Conference
Parent, Teacher, Child Conferences occur when the student introduces his / her parents to their portfolio and any other work in the classroom which they wish to share. The Parent, Teacher, Child Conferences takes the form of an extended discussion that involves students leading their parents and teacher through their own understanding of their recent learning and their goals for future learning. The ability of the student to "lead' the conference depends in the child's age, ability and past experience, however the goal is to increasingly develop each student's ability to confidently discuss themselves and their work in an honest and open manner.

Portfolios will be sent home on Tuesday 10th June and you are asked to bring them with you to your conference time on Thursday 12th June. In the front of your childs portfolio will be a time that has been coordinated by all primary teachers.

A reminder that Thursday is a non teaching day and no formal lessons will take place on this day.
P6 Dinner
The P6 students and teachers will share a meal and spend time reflecting on achievements and accomplishments (and funny happenings!) next Thursday evening at Picasso Café. Students are excited about getting dressed up and celebrating the closure of their primary years education at ISMAC. Parent are encouraged to attend our final whole school assembly next Wednesday at 11am were you will see the P6 students receive their PYP Exhibition Certificates as well as being handed over to our secondary school and the beginning of their Middle Years Programme.
Dance Exhibition
Friday 12th June, 8.15 start!, Put your dancing shoes on and come to school for a morning of movement. The students will be sharing groovy routines, line dances, traditional dances and generally moving to the music! Karibu!
P6/M1 Transiton Day
On Monday 15th June the P6 students will spend blocks of 20 minutes in each secondary class they will be attending next school year. A mixture of excitement and anxiety is high! P6 students will be buddied with an M1 student. They will participate in an introduction to the MYP as well as attend Tutor class and classes in Maths, Humanities, English, Science, The Arts, PE
21:21 Documentary
On Monday 15th June our P5 students will be working with a film company from Tokyo. The film will be hosted and narrated by Patrick Newell, an international educator who's been involved in global education for the past 18 years - and directed by Gisli Snaer, an award winning filmmaker who's been honored at major film festivals around the world.

The documentary focuses on water sustainability in countries around the world. We are excited that our students; as part of their Waste Matters unit of inquiry will be able to discuss and share their knowledge and understanding about this topic in an Arusha context with the rest of the world! More information will be coming to parents of the P5 students.
