On Saturday 26 September, the Inter-School Athletics Day begins at 0900 and ending at approximately 1300.
Quarter 1
It's hard to believe perhaps, but the end of quarter 1 is not so far away on October 9. Updates on the progress of all students (interim reports) will be shared with all families during this week.
M5 Leadership Symposium
M5 students from both campuses met at Kishari House in Moshi for the annual Leadership Symposium in which students explored the theme of leadership through workshops presented by some 14 teachers and invited speakers. Thus, theoretical and practical perspectives were shared and discussed, while students also had multiple opportunities to put leadership in action through team challenges and activities. Some of the central themes that emerged included types of leadership and leaders, establishing trust, what effective leaders do and what they don't, roles people tend to play in a team, qualities of leaders, leadership in moving from MYP to DP, and leading community and service initatives. Through commentaries, dialogue and action, the M5 students ensured that these themes were examined in multi-faceted and deep levels. For both old and young, it was a deeply enriching three days!
Approaches to Learning
One theme that was discussed at the Leadership Symposium was the link between leadership, creativity and living in different countries. Dr. Paul Courtright, director of Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology, helped us see the mistake of worrying ourselves and others about what can't be remedied in a plenary session entitled Leadership: 11 Mistakes to Avoid. In addition, he commented on recent research outlined in The Economist, that people who have lived in various countries tend to be better at adapting to daily inconveniences such as electrical cuts, sudden weather changes and emergencies. Internationally-minded people tend to be more creative with finding solutions to such inconveniences and with coping with them.
From the Technology Department:
Parents/Students/Teachers: a little tip to make your technological life easier ...please note that the school operates and uses Microsoft Office 2003 as its standard software for Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. If you have Office 2007 at home, please 'Save As' a 1997-2003 document version to ensure compatibility with the school machines. Thanks, Carl Love ().

International Literacy Day
Thank you to our parents, teachers from both primary and secondary and MYP students who made the time to share the reading of their favourite books to our students. The students particularly enjoyed having stories read to them in languages other than English. We hope this sharing and love of books continues throughout the year.
'Nine!'
On Wednesday this week our P5/6 students initiated a spontaneous '9th' celebration on the 9th minute of the 9th hour of the 9th day of the 9th month of the 2009th year everyone in primary as well as classes that could make it from our middle school gathered to share static balances in groups of '9'. - AWESOME! creativity, risk taking and accomplishments!
Early Childhood Parent Information Meeting
Many thanks to our parents who came and spent the morning in EC this week and found out more about daily and weekly routines. It is pleasing to see our 3-5 years olds making decisions, reflecting and sharing their enjoyment of being apart of the EC programme.
Co Curricular Activities
Sticky gluey fingers making paper mache plates, dry clay hands sculpting pencil holders, colourful splattered fingers creating nature filled paintings, dazzled bewildered eyes thinking about their next chess move and lots of gutteral number counting in TaeKwando!! to name a few! of the fun activities students are participating in during our after school co curricular activities.

Law and Order - from a Massai Perspective
This week our P5/6 students enjoyed an enlighting visit to a Massai Boma in Monduli. They asked questions about what laws the Massai had, how they were developed and how they were up held. The students listened to stories of how the laws were handed down by leaders in the past and how the 'wazee' decided on rules and punishments. The students would like to thank Mwalemu Magdelena and her husband for coordinating this very memorable field study trip for them.
"Knowledge changes attitudes, attitudes change action, action changes the world"
"The development of personal attitudes towards people, the environment and learning, contributes to the well being of the individual and of the class."
At ISM having the right attitudes will go a long way in helping students learn how to learn.
Curiosity: I am curious about how we learn, about the, world, it's people and cultures.
